To GMorrison,

Thank you for the information in regards to a dull-coat.  Mrs. Toshi took me to Hobby Lobby this evening, and I found what I was looking for.  Testors Dull-Coat #1260.  I also found my next project, I'll start a thread on my build.  Thank you for the read and reply.

Go to Ace. They will have some matte clear spray from Krylon, I'm sure. Or go to Michaels, they will have spray fixative. Neither of those are a first choice and go light with them, but they will do the job.

To Gamera,

Yes, I completely agree with the forum members critique as well as yours in that I must find a way to get a dull-coat to tone it down.  Neither Michaels nor Hobby lobby had any dull-coats available, apparently they sold out and will get a shipment in soon.

Mrs. Toshi will take me to Hobby Lobby, then we can pick out a scale model as well as a dull-coat.  Both places had only gloss-coat available.  Hence my issue, it's something I can tackle.  I noticed a Tamiya bottle similar to size and design of Tamiyas liquid glue, except this was a dull-coat.  I just might purchase the set of airbrush.  One can dream can they not?  LOL!

As for the cockpit windows/glass, you are correct, I did the frames of the glass by hand.  In other words, no tape and no mask.

Thank you for the input in regards to the dull-coat as well as the airbrush.  I will be diligent with my practice in acquiring the airbrush talent.   Thank you for the read and reply.

Toshi, that looks killer man! Even with the gloss finish, I still think it's pretty sweet. The tips these guys are throwing out are priceless though. Every time I come to this forum, I feel like I should have a pen and a pad of paper. In fact, I might just start doing that!

Hey Toshi, she looks great! Only thing I'd do different is as Eric commented a shot or two of matte varnish will dull down the shine a great deal. Still, nice work, I assume you hand-painted the metal frames on the canopy- it's much better than I can do!

If I might toss in a tip though practice, practice and practice with the airbrush you bought. It's not the quality of the brush as much as just getting experience with the thing till it's as easy as riding a bike. You'll probably want to invest in a compressor after awhile though, I started out with propellant cans and frankly as expensive as they are after you buy ten or so you'd have spent enough to buy a decent compressor. And you don't need a top of the line airbrush either, a Paasche H-series or Badger 350 will do a pretty good job and will last for years- I've used a 350 for about 7 years and the H-series for over 10 - it's expensive but treat it as an investment. I like the Paasche better since it's mostly metal as opposed to the Badger having many plastic parts- I've dropped the Paasche on a concrete floor several times without any damage. I swear I think I could drive over it with a truck and it would still work fine!

To mustang1989,

Thank you for your support in this project.  As for the dull-coat, Hobby Lobby and Michaels were out of stock in the dull-coat, hence my use in the next best scenario, gloss clear coat.  When the two stores mentioned above re-stocks their inventory,  I'll be right there to pick up and purchase the dull-coat.  Thank you again for the read and reply.  I did see a Tamiya dull-coat, it looks like a Tamiya liquid cement bottle with a brush  I just might go ahead and purchase the Tamiya product.

To Joe Rix,

It pleases me greatly that you so enjoyed my build of a P-40.  As for having fun?  It went smoothly, including my trip to Michaels to exchange my Testors camouflage kit.  It definitely was an extremely fun build as I got to share this build in a step by step scenirio.  Thank you for the read and reply.

You can't go wrong with that Toshi! The only thing I had to add is what Eric said about the dullcoat but other than that, she's a beauty!!!

Hi There Toshi. I regret that I am late to the party as I get don't around the Forums as much as I would like. Yet, I could not miss the opportunity to let you know what an excellent job you have done on your P-40. The work you have done there is quite impressive. What's most important is that I hope you are happy with the results and that you just enjoyed the heck out of yourself while building it. The skills and techniques will come along with practice and the continued support from the great folks here. I really enjoyed following your progress. Nice to see that your making steady progress in using an airbrush. Although I am quite impressed with your brush painting skills. I'm looking forward to your next build. May you always keep the glue on the plastic.

   Regards, Joe

To echolmberg,

I will definitely take that into consideration.  The clear coat I purchased is a gloss coat as that's all that was available.  My next project will be from Hobby Lobby, I don't know what to get.  I am going to order via eBay a Tamiya P-51 Mustang, it's at a buy it now cost of approximately $120.00.  I think it's the kit with PE.

Thank you for the read and reply,

Toshi

To bvallot,

Thank you for the read and reply!  I really appreciate this, and as far as who's plane I'm building, I don't know.  Mrs. Toshi said since I'm done with the P-40, she'll take me to Hobby Lobby for another kit.

I think it looks great!  If I might offer a teeny tiny suggestion???  Perhaps for your very last step, you could give it a final shot of dullcote.  This would take the high shine off the model.  The P-40s dealt with some rough conditions in the CBI theater.  Adding a layer of dullcote would definitely tone down the shine especially on the tires.

One very important thing here, though.  If you were to give it a coat of dullcote, make sure you mask off the clear plastic parts.  Dullcote will seriously fog the clear plastic which you DEFINITELY don't want.

Toshi, I have this same kit in my stash and I've been a bit nervous about tackling it.  You're a braver man than I am!  Great job on this kit!  What's next?

Nice job so far Toshi.  I've been away from the forum a bit lately and I'm just not getting caught up with some interesting posts.

Who's plane are you planning on building here?

To Reasoned,

Yes, I agree.  I'm just having fun with this kit.  What's profound about this build is the whole airbrush issue being it's my first time.  I couldn't get it to work but when I did, I was so excited.  Thank you for the read and reply, it's greatly appreciated.  Peace be with you.

Looks very good Toshi.  That kit (although uncomplicated) can be a real PIA if you let it, so don't, have fun with it.
