Completed Revell 1:32 F4U-1 Corsair Baa Baa Blacksheep VMF-214 Maj. "Pappy" Boyington
Posted by Toshi on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 7:50 PM

To my fellow forum members,

I really got into modeling from the TV show Baa Baa Blacksheep in which Robert Conrad portrayed the part of Maj. Greg "Pappy" Boyington.  I recall building a total of three of this very same Corsair kit, each one breaking at the folding wing section.  This time around I'll epecially take great extra care in that area.

My dad and I used to watch this show religiously, I became a rabid fan of the F4U-1 Corsair.  I still remember the beginning of each show; "We are poor little lambs, who have lost our way, baa, baa, baa".

Adding to your already spectacular Corsair air wing I see. I would watch that show every week as well. Now I watch and see a ton of errors, but at the time I was totally enthralled.

Yes, I was torn between the Trumpeter or the Tamiya 1:32 Corsair and just purchase the AM "Lulu-belle" decals.  But I had to have the original Baa Baa Blacksheep kit out of nostalgia.  There's only four sprues.  I thought there were more.  LOL!  I have to agree with you, back in the day as a young child, the kit looked bigger and much more complex.  LOL!  Thanks for the visit.

I'm starting with the Verlinden resin cockpit.  It's a kit in itself!

I know that you are going to blow my mind with this build (as usual) Toshi.

Used to watch the show religiously the same as everyone else , but as MC said, watching it now that we know more we can see all the errors and the fact that they used the same scenes in almost every show.

I don't know if I'll blow your mind but I'll try my darnest to do so.  I know it was recycled scenes but it was still a blast to watch!  Thank you for the read and reply!

Yes, it was a mish mash of Corsairs.  Ebay actually has sellers with the first and second seasons on a DVD.  They trend at or around $20.00.  Thanks for the visit.

This happens to be my favorite WW2 air combat show involving my favorite WW2 fighter plane. Of course, the Corsair became my favorite WW2 fighter because of the show. And I also have a 1/72 kit of this on the have-now-must-do-someday list.  You're killing me Toshi! Lol.

looking forward to another great build of yours.

I'm Loving It Toshi! Every day is a good day when you see anything Corsair. I also have this kit in my stash. Been around since I was in high school. I started it back then yet, I never got around to finishing. But, there it still sits to this day. Very excited to see you build this up with some choice AM.

Yup, watched Black Sheep religiously with my mom and dad, who flew the Corsair.. We loved it. I can still watch it today with pure enjoyment without the "mistakes" getting in the way. Just a fun program that's nostalgic to me.

By the way, I just broke out my 1/72 Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair to get started on. I'll be posting a WIP here right shortly.

Nice choice, Toshi!  And it's still a pretty good kit, despite its age.  I look forward to following your build.

I was a big fan of "Baa, Baa, Black Sheep"/"Black Sheep Squadron", too, though I had to suspend disbelief to see Robert Conrad as Boyington.  Simon Oakland would have been better Smile

Another fun piece of trivia about Revell is that they reboxed their Zero kit as a tie-in to the show, too.  But the box art used a still from the show, and the "Zeroes" in the photo were modifed AT Texans, some of which were veterans of such Hollywood offerings as "Tora! Tora! Tora!" and "Midway".

Cool subject Toshi. That resin cockpit looks like it could be a pain but from how you've been progressing you're do a great job with it.

When I was in Jr High, like most of us, early world history was somewhat slow and my history teacher didn’t know what she was talking about, PFFTTTT BORING!!!
That was until we got to WWII and she stated that she was a W.A.S.P. and flew everything from a P-51 to fairing Corsairs to the pacific. I was hooked. From that point on she was the most interesting person, outside of my own family service members, that I knew. I was not bored after that.

Yes, despite I'ts age and being such an ancient kit, it still holds it's own.  Looking at it last night, the Revell kit looked bigger and much more complicated when I was a youngster.  LOL!

WOW!  That's awesome information.  Great trivia!  The Zero's were actually AT Texans.  I would have never known.  Thanks for sharing that and thanks for the visit.

I too think this is going to be a cool build.  I was going to buy either the Trumpeter or Tamiya 1:32 Corsair and just add AM "Pappy" Boyingtons decals on, but I'm glad I changed my mind and went in this direction.  It's just a rush, I feel like a drug addict.  Wanting more and more!  LOL!

This is the first time I've ever touched a resin product, I'll take it one step at a time on the Verlinden cockpit.  Wish me luck Gamera, I hope I succeed in this endevour.  Thank you for the read and reply!

Way to go Toshi, I'm excited to see this. The Corsair is amongst my favorites, and I still love the show. Kids these days don't know what are good shows, I'll trade "keeping up with the kardashians" any day for reruns of Black Sheep Squadron.

To modelcrazy,

My dad played trumpet in the Royal Hawaiian Band.  This band was established by King Kamehameha III.  It is the only band in the United States that falls under as a City and County Government job.  The RHB would play at public gatherings and at special ceremonies.

I'll never forget the day at a fair in which the band was performing and one of the guest apperrance was none other than "Pappy" himself.  I was really young and could only admire and excitedly honor him from a distance but that was good enough for me.  Matter of fact, one of the Three Stooges made a guest appearance as well.  I just don't recall which one as I was way too excited to be in the presence of "Pappy" himself.

A few months later, "Pappy" was on CBS news (Hawaii local television station) on December 7.  He was a special guest describing some of his many adventures.  What strikes me was that he held his Japanese counter parts with high esteem.  That's something I find very rare these days.  I remember him saying how much respect he had for the Zero pilots.  Thanks for the read and reply.

Ok, this is going to be fun!

Where did you get the kit, Toshi? The instruction sheet looks a bit aged. Is this kit available as "new" from Revell?

Looking forward to following along on your first resin job. That looks like a fairly daunting resin cockpit. You'll do great, you always do.
