Looking good so far.
FYI: "LucyBelle" #86, was NOT Boyington's regular airplane. LucyBelle was spiffed up with his name and kill markings for publicity shots. In fact, several of the BlackSheep posed sitting in her cockpit.
The closest you will get to Pappy's "regular" plane was #883. She was a pretty plain jane tricolor F4U-1D.
In actuality the Navy and Marines back then didn't have a plane assigned to a pilot on a regular basis. Planes were assigned as the mission order was written. It's the same system in use today. Yes your name will be stencilled on a bird in the squadron, but you won't necessaarily fly that one.
Boyington always told his planners to give him an older airplane and let the new guys fly the newer, better birds. I'm sure concealing Boyington's identity had some impact on airplane assignments, but I'm also sure Pappy didn't dive a darn.
