A little progess on the dio bits.  Got some weathering and decals on:

Bomb lift both with and without bomb.  Cut out the mid section of the lift and added styrene rod to simulate the working and mechanics of the lift and added foot pedals.  Also added some wood cradles used to steady the bomb as it was lifted.

Clarktor Tug and fuel barrels.  Added spark plug wires (not seen in picture) to tug.  Fuel barrels are resin bits from Legend productions. Tug not weathered yet.

Bomb and crates.  Crates made from popsicle sticks and decals on crates are home made.  Crates not weathered yet.

Just have to weather these last few parts and then paint one more figure and I can assemble the dio.

So after finding a new way to host images, thanks Photo Suck It, I have some progress on my Havoc Dio.  I am reposting a pic of the finished Havoc to recap where I last left off.

I have since painted a monogram navigator figure, some bombs, a Tug, bomb lift and scratch made some bomb crates.  Everything has a coat of future.  Decals and wash/weathering next.

Dio tarmac base:

Navigator

Misc bits with self printed decals for crates

Havoc on base.  Not sure how layout will be.  Also have some fuel barrels not pictured yet.

I also have a pilot figure primed and ready to paint.  I plan to have navigator and pilot facing each other as if to be talking about the mission as bombs are getting loaded.

I'm with Bish. I think the inclusion of the figures is going to be great. :)

The base is we'll done and compliments that model perfectly!

Route62, you did a great job on a very neglected aircraft. I am especially impressed with the camouflage.

I used the holiday weekend to make a simple tarmac base for the Havoc.  I have some figures and a tug tractor in my spares.  I think I will make a small scene with the tug pulling a cart of bombs and have a pilot and navigator figure look to be talking  about mission details.

Here is the completed base.  It went fast since it is a simple layout.  Just used stuff I already had.  Took about two evenings to complete.

Thank you all!  I am getting great feedback from everyone.  I have some clear bench space so onto the next one.  I have started on the monogram F-102 Dagger.  From reading reviews this kit goes together well.  I have started on the rescribing and will post a WIP as soon as I have made some progress. I have never done a gloss finish aircraft so this should be interesting.

Oh wow, I liked how my model of this kit came out when I built it but dang now I wish she looked as good as yours!!! Heart

And thanks for the walk-though on how you weathered her.

falconmod

How did you do your weathering/chipping  on the props and cowl?

John

Thanks for asking.  Once the model was decaled and another coat of gloss clear was applied,

first I did a basic sludge wash using burnt umber oil paint.  I thin the oil paint way down till it is almost as thin as the thinner.  Using a flat brush I will apply the wash working in sections.  I do not do the whole model at once.  I let the section dry, in this case wing/cowl/prop, for 10-15 min.  Then I take a piece of paper towel put a few drops of thinner on it just enough to wet it without soaking.  I then lightly wipe away as much of the wash in the direction of air flow of flight.  Any hard to reach corners etc I will wet a cotton swab with thinner, dab most of thinner out of the swab and wipe away the sludge wash.

This will leave wash in the panel lines and add streaks as well as tone down any bright colors like the invasion stripes and yellow prop tips. If needed I will repeat depending on the effect I am going for.  I will then go back with a pointed brush and using the pin wash method add wash to any panel lines that the sludge wash did not fill or I wiped away.  Again wait to dry and wipe away any extra.

for chipping, it is similar to drybrushing.  I used some packing foam, it is the same packing foam that you can see in the wheel wells in some of the earlier WIP pics.  The foam or sponge should have an open pockets as part of its makeup, not the foam that is solid.

I will clamp a piece of this foam into some locking tweezers, dip a corner of the foam in silver paint, dab most of the paint off the foam on a piece of paper and then tap the foam at different angles so not to create a pattern onto the prop and cowl, leaving convincing looking chips.  If there is too much, I can wipe away with thinner and try again.

Once I am happy with the chipping, I will take a small brush and using the same silver paint drybrush highlights here and there along the leading edge of the prop and inside lip of cowl.

If the silver is too bright I can add a little wash again over the chipping to tone it down.

Most long wire antennas that I came across during my time in the Army were bare metal. Based off that, I'd say stay with bare metal.

Regarding your photos, the flash enhancing those two things I mentioned makes perfect sense.

F is for FIRE, That burns down the whole town!

U is for URANIUM... BOMBS!

N is for NO SURVIVORS...

I was not sure what color if any the antenna wire would be on these aircraft.  Right now it is just the bare wire.  Any input is appreciated.
