How did you do your weathering/chipping on the props and cowl?
John
Thanks for asking. Once the model was decaled and another coat of gloss clear was applied,
first I did a basic sludge wash using burnt umber oil paint. I thin the oil paint way down till it is almost as thin as the thinner. Using a flat brush I will apply the wash working in sections. I do not do the whole model at once. I let the section dry, in this case wing/cowl/prop, for 10-15 min. Then I take a piece of paper towel put a few drops of thinner on it just enough to wet it without soaking. I then lightly wipe away as much of the wash in the direction of air flow of flight. Any hard to reach corners etc I will wet a cotton swab with thinner, dab most of thinner out of the swab and wipe away the sludge wash.
This will leave wash in the panel lines and add streaks as well as tone down any bright colors like the invasion stripes and yellow prop tips. If needed I will repeat depending on the effect I am going for. I will then go back with a pointed brush and using the pin wash method add wash to any panel lines that the sludge wash did not fill or I wiped away. Again wait to dry and wipe away any extra.
for chipping, it is similar to drybrushing. I used some packing foam, it is the same packing foam that you can see in the wheel wells in some of the earlier WIP pics. The foam or sponge should have an open pockets as part of its makeup, not the foam that is solid.
I will clamp a piece of this foam into some locking tweezers, dip a corner of the foam in silver paint, dab most of the paint off the foam on a piece of paper and then tap the foam at different angles so not to create a pattern onto the prop and cowl, leaving convincing looking chips. If there is too much, I can wipe away with thinner and try again.
Once I am happy with the chipping, I will take a small brush and using the same silver paint drybrush highlights here and there along the leading edge of the prop and inside lip of cowl.
If the silver is too bright I can add a little wash again over the chipping to tone it down.
