MPC-Airfix Savoia-Marchetti S.79

Build Progress Report No.1

January 7, 2018

  • Aileron base colors painted on well as mainwing areas around where seated, they with painted & weathered landing gear then mounted on mainwings.
  • Fuselage halves & interior parts, engine cowling insides, mainwing landing gear wheel wells & inner doors, painted Testors Model Master 1726 Light Sea Gray replicating Gigorio Azzurro Chiaro 1 per the Stormo Magazine Monograph regarding Savoia-Marchetti built S.79 interior coloration.
  • Airfix S.79 kit fuselage interior parts & crew figures wholly inaccurate, holding down production costs vs "accuracy" no doubt was in play.
  • Modelers have scratch built "accurate" interiors for the Airfix kit but I chose only to modify the rear bulkhead next to the crew entrance doorway, didn't want to invest time modifying an already troublesome kit to build knowing much of the fuselage interior is out of view.
  • In-progress photos will be posted after the fuselage is assembled, work on it commences tomorrow.

MPC-Airfix Savoia-Marchetti S.79

 Build Progress Report No.2

January 11, 2018

  • Fuselage assembled with interior parts, rudder, tail wheel & landing light (not shown), masking tape over tail wheel to protect weathering paint.
  • Cockpit canopy assembly always difficult with the Airfix S.79 kit, this build - the last one ever - seated it on fuselage halves with least effort of the dozen or so models I'd built since 1967.
  • Port side canopy fit slightly off due to defective castings but not enough to warrant additional filling & sanding work; darn thing went on OK, no gift horse gazing!
  • Airplane modeled is level bomber, torpedo bomber shackel attachment grooves below center fuselage puttied in (not shown), neglected doing this with all my previous level bomber kit builds.
  • Mainwings assembled with painted ailerions & landing gear weathering included on latter, masking tape over wheels to protect weathering paint.
  • Mainwings glued on fuselage, wing root seams puttied top & bottom, neglected doing this with all my previous kit builds.
  • Engine cowlings test-mounted to show airplane layout well as open rear gun position part option, it & closed part option will be painted but neither glued on the fuselage.
  • Unassembled tailplane parts displayed, moving part joins will be painted before assembly then each tailplane fully painted before mounted on the fuselage.

Just catching up... astonishing project, really nicely executed. It's a bit overwhelming as a viewer, I almost can't imagine as the builder. Will be following along as you go.

Zounds!

Thank you if y'all mean my Regia Aeronautica Italia series being a project. It will have an end, just pray'n it'll be before health issues ala migraines & HOWLING LOUD left ear tininus take completely over, eyes & hands still good though.

MPC-Airfix Savoia-Marchetti S.79

Build Progress Report No.3

January 15, 2018

  • Humbrol 81 Pale Yellow enamel + 36% white sprayed over all aircraft topsides & below wing leading edges, engine cowlings et. al. parts.
  • Paint behaves like a metallic, i.e. high translucence, poor pigment/vehicle mixing stability, lowest nozzle spraying settings necessary to avoid globbing.
  • Two "light" coats set for 24 hours followed by a "heavy", long breath-holdings with each spray pass, will cure till dry enough to handle possibly rest of this week.
  • Airfix kit radial engine parts sprayed extra dark gray almost black.
  • Engine parts themselves wholly inaccurate, i.e. double-row rather than the single-row 9-cylinder, 860 h.p. Alfa Romeo 128 R.C.18, extra dark gray color makes rear row hard to see even head-on didn't bother "blanking" it out for appearances.
  • Propeller blade front sides painted Testors Model Master RLM 65 per Regia Aeronautica Italia documentary references I'd come across some years ago they'd be factory painted in a similar color though this wasn't universally done.
  • Savoia-Marchetti manufactured aircraft in particular were known to had painted propellers, period color photos show them painted & unpainted, this kit build chose to paint them.
  • Two-color green top camouflage will be applied after the Pale Yellow base is throughly dry, airbrushing effort will be amongst my most challenging to date, more later!

CMPR Schema C9 Macchie rade Verde Chiaro e Verde Scurosu fondo Giallo Mimetico

MPC-Airfix Savoia-Marchetti S.79

Build Progress Report No.5

January 20, 2018

  • Photos of aircraft topsides, engine cowlings, Rear Gunner covers CMPR Schema C9 camouflage application pattern, tailplane topsides similarly camouflaged.
  • Tailplane undersides, Landing Gear Doors, Bombardier Bathtub,  painted Humbrol 140 Matt Gull Grey.
  • Tailplane Support Struts, Ailerion Counterweights on parts trees also painted Humbrol 140, will be trimmed off & touch-up painted later.
  • Outward-facing sides of Engine Cowling Ring Mounts painted extra dark grey near black, will be glued on fuselage & mainwing engine mounts before Engine Cowlings go on.
  • Humbrol 81 Pale Yellow notoriously difficult working with, still very tacky, must let dry couple more days before masking & painting airplane undersides Humbrol 140.
