WIP Memorial Day Start Build Trumpeter 1/32 F4F-3 Wildcat Completed
Posted by Toshi on Monday, May 28, 2018 12:06 PM

To my fellow forum members,

I’ll be starting this build on this most memorable day for our veterans that served the armed forces.  Although I have never served I wanted to build this Wildcat in honor of our veterans.  Thank you all!

I‘m building this strictly OOB as it comes with lots of goodies already.  For starters it has two hundred sixty seven parts, seven spruces, clear engine cover, several metal pins for movable flaps, rubber tires, and a PE fret.  I think this kit covers all it‘s bases and then some.  Please see below for photo pics!

I started this one for the Midway GB, and got sidetracked.  Also started the -3 at the same time.

You're going to love it, the radial isn't bad for a kit piece, details out nice.

Going to follow, and maybe get enthused to get back to it.

I read the reviews some time ago and was most impressed by it.  The details seem to be a really nice kit for a OOB kit.  Thank you for following and supporting the build.

One of my favorites, although I never built this particular kit of the Wildcat.  I recently built the old Revell 1/32 'cat but would love to build this one.

Any thoughts on what scheme you're going to do?  A Guadalcanal Wildcat, perhaps?

Yes, also a favorite of mines yet I’ve never built a Wildcat before!  lol!  I’ll be building the Robert Glaer, VMF-244 Guadalcanal 1942.  Your intuition is spot on!  I hope you’ll be following along, also thank you for your current support!

The start with the cockpit utilizing interestingly enough a transparent instrument film panel that really looks great.  To cut the film transfer out, I used a Fisker scissors that was in the Gingher sewing section.  It was priced accordingly!  I utilize this cutting tool for the majority of the times on decals.

I forgot to add my Fiskar Ginghar type scissors last night but here it is. For the price point, you can’t beat it.  I paid $12.00.  As oppossed to $25.00.

Also here are the concurring rest of the cockpit parts.

This is a cool build. I'm looking forward to seeing it come together. I want to add one of these to the stash, but I've told myself to stop buying kits and build what I have. It's hard to do, but so far so good.

I built that one Tosh, it is an excellent kit.Only tricky part are the pe hinges.Be advised the wings do fold back ,but if you put the machine gun parts in the wings they are so heavy that the wings have to be tied together with fishing line to keep the wings folded.

Nice choice of aircraft and scheme.

A couple of things. The kit is a -3 not a -4. Check the box and funny papers.

Yours does not have folding wings. The other major difference was 4 guns on the -3, 6 guns on the -4.

Trumpeter royally screwed the pooch on the color sheet there. The aviators name was Galer, not Glaer. The Marine Squadron was VMF-224, not -244.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

I have this one in my stash and I got Vallejo's paint set for Marine and US N any WW2 to go with it.

It's really nice thought for we veterans, Toshi, and I thank you. I will be following this myself with regard to building my own at some point.

Many times whilst in Iraq and Afghanistan I had air support from A-10 aircraft. Everyone dug or found a deeper hole but the support was always spot on, even when they were told "Friendly Close". They came lower than they had to to make sure, at one time even practically head height to rake a building with their Gatling guns practically taking it apart.

Angels on our shoulders!!

Go for it, Toshi, my friend!

This is always good to know.  This site is excellent, everyone whom has knowledge in kits through building and or reviewing a kit can pass on their knowledge as such onto other members building the particular kit.  Thank you philo426!

I will definately take your advise and apply that technique so as not to come across any issues and concerns you so mentioned in your post above.  Once again, thank you for your support and following of my build!

It is a very great kit.  I enjoy kits that self include OOB items although GMorison pointed out several major errors on Trumpeters part that needs to be corrected with AM decals.  I just hope they are available as I type this.  It is with my greatest pleasure that I build this kit in honor of veterans forMemorial day sir.

That‘s very exciting for us to know that you, to have this very same kit available in your stash.  What are you waiting for, you’ve got paint and I’m sure you’ve got Tamiya liquid Cement!  lol!

Thank you for sharing that story with Forum Members here.  It’s stories like that that are awe inspiring and lead us to continue building A-10’s and dioramas with A-10’s like that!
