Another fit problem. Tab A(wing) will not fit into slot B(fuselage). The wing tab is a least 1/32 to thick to fit into fuselage. Not even going to use my mini-file and going with my wood file.

And have decided to just glue flaps into place like the rudder. The way the parts are designed they really don't move, they just sort of wiggle.Smile

I have counted at least a dozen sink marks so I will just be putty/ sanding/repeat all weekend. Supposed to rain all anyway.

After a brief hiatus of posting because of 4th, relatives visiting, golf, gardening, etc. I am making progress. The pontoons needed alot of work, with some more to go. I did make the mistake of not putting the struts in when gluing the pontoon halves. The struts had a lip around them which now has to be cut off.  Actually worked out for the better for PSR and when it comes to painting. Blind Squirrel!

It took some work to get the wings to fit this well on the top. Being a modelling "hack", my techniques are probably "Cringeworhty" to the skilled modeller. I left the wings foldable because gluing them in place would have required ALOT of effort I am just not willing to put in. And was not certain that it would look any better.

The bottom looks horrendous and the wingroots need work. I am going to put in some "shims" to fill the gaps. Probably should have done that before I glued, but have never done it before. When is all said and done the "jake" should turn out OK, but this is the "Wonkiest" model I have ever built. And after seeing photo of the back wings, they need fixed.Sad

Better to have those gaps in the bottom where:1, they are less visible, and 2, the flat surrounding areas are easier to work with for filling and sanding.

And you’re doing a fine job of whipping this beast into shape!

Thanks, Stick! I definitely "erred" to make the gaps be on the bottom. I have a little more PSR to do to the wings. At least I don't have to worry about raised panel lines anymore.

...And after a 5 month break from modelling, the Weekend Madness GB has pulled me from the modelling funk. I have finally started back to my "Jake" ssllooowww WIP. I got back to it last week but like others, I haven't been able to log on. I did a horrendous job of masking. Rushed through it because I really hate masking. Should turn out...meh...with a little help from Goo Gone. When I went to glue on the canopies I ran into a problem. Because I had cut out the pit tub and built my own, the glass had nothing to sit on. I had to add some little tabs which left some serious gaps. If anybody else builds this kit(DON'T DO IT) and replaces the pit, you'll have to make a little "shelf" around the tub for the canopy to rest. If that makes any sense. I got it primed, with Rustoleum Painters Touch in a spray can. Kind of like the stuff. Cheap and looks pretty nice. We'll see how good it is soon. Did a little preshading which turned out terrible. AB apparently was not cleaned out very good. But it's preshading and thankfully it doesn't have to be a work of art.

Slowly, finishing up this WIP. Almost done with the painting. I have a few touch-ups on the bottom because even with all the precautions there was some paint lifting on a rear flap. Must of missed a spot. The photo does not do justice to the pretty color VJMA Olive Green!!! Through all the trials and tribulations of putting this plane together, the dolly turned out great!!Big Smile

Ooopsie. Sorry Stick. Took the picture quickly with the phone. Not an Annie Liebowitz or an Ansel Adams to begin with.(Only famous photographers I can think of)

Next ones will be better!

Lol! No worries Beav. I’m just playing. How about Jimmy Olsen for a famous photographer?

Personally one one of my favorites was Robert Capa, but his best work was not composed at all. It just captured incredible moments.

I refuse to acknowledge a cub photographer of the Daily Planet as a "Famous Photographer".

Capa, Rosenthal, Bourke-White all had great photos. The back stories are as interesting as the pictures.

The Jake is finished!!! I left it pretty and shiny with very little weathering...and because I took the mask off the canopy. I refuse to re-mask just to put on Matt Varnish. And mainly because this Donkey deserves to look pretty and it was an ugly build.

All in all, I am happy the way it turned out. It is a "turrible" model and would love to see some other company make one. Actually, wouldn't mind another crack at this one again, knowing what to do and not to do.

Just one other thing I haven't metioned in the former posts. The folding wings will split if you put them down in the locked and loaded position. So if anybody decides to make this model in the future the folding mechanisms will need to be filed and sanded down.

Very little weathering on the bottom...just a few brush stroke of Tamiya "make-up".

You're building character along with this Jake, Beav Wink

I've got some Nichimo copies of Monogram kits, and the old Tamiya Pete biplane scout in 1/50.  I'm always amused to see the engineering choices these kits show.  On your Jake, I had to ask-why mold the front ends of the floats separately?  Why not just mold left and right halves for each one?  And how does the wing fold work?  It looks like you pull the wing out, and then fold it, and slide it back in, when the wing is deployed.

Yup, she’s fighting you... but you’re fighting back... and winning... I think there are a few folks here who would have thrown this into a one way flight by now.

Keep up the good work!

I don't think character and my name have ever been used in the same sentence. Might be a first.

On the floats I think they were separate to load with weights. (I did, it's a tail-dragger). They might of mention it in the instructions but I really don't like to read.

The wings do fold and slide into the main part of the wing. The "tab" is thick and split my wing when I pushed it in to paint. That issue did not come up in pre-fit.

Which reminds me of another issue. You know those alignment pins inside the wing halfs, they were to long. When I glued the halves together with my Faller glue from Germany, which bonds really well, the pins melted through the wings. Never had that happen before.

Thank you, Stik!

It was perfect practice for a Mafia GB!

Like I mentioned earlier, if my small stash was not becoming medium-sized, I wouldn't mind having another crack at the Jake.

Oh wow, the finish looks good! And the canopy must have been a pain to mask.

Ack, about the other issues... I had assumed the wing joints slide up into the wings. That's crazy that the paint made them too thick to fit!

My hat's off to you for finishing her instead of flinging her into the wall...

Thanks, Gamera. The canopy wasn't that hard to mask, just a bunch of rectangles. I see why people buy AM masks,I just hate masking.

The joints didn't fit before I painted. After handpainting the joints, they definitly don't fit. VJ model air is not good for hand brushing.Smile
