Fine Molds 1/72nd Me 410 Complete
Posted by Bish on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 5:53 AM

A few years ago, tempestjohnny got me hooked on buying Fine Molds me 410 kits from Hobby Plaza in japan (sorry mate, got to blame someone Big Smile). Since then i have bought 4 of the 410 kits plus 3 of their Bf 109's. I have built an FM TIE Interceptor before but this is the first of their aircraft kits.

The aircraft i am doing is a night bomber, which FM lists as a B-1. But from what i can find out, thats not correct, as simply adding exhausts shrouds and a black undercoat did not change the variant, the B-1 had a different gun arrangment. And KG.2, the unit the aircraft i'm doiung belong to, never operated the B from what i can find, only the A-1. But thats a technicality. The kit looks nicely detailed, there is no AM on the market for this, but i did add some PE belts from the spares box. I used the kit decals for the instruments and i didn't go to mad on detailing as the small pit will be hard to see.

After fitting it into the fuselage, i used some styrene rod for the frame that goes under the canopy and then fitted the wings.

Fit has not been to bad so far. I have read one review which suggests the engine fit is not so good and i have done some dry fitting which seems to confirm this. So i am going to tackle those next.

Nice start on this one, Bish. The cockpit looks very good. This is a very interesting aircraft, I have the 1/48 Meng kit, and will be watching with interest.

Thanks Bruce. Ye, it is, i couldn't find much info on it. I used a couple of on line pics for referance. fermis done a great job on the same kit last year, amazing pit detail he hand painted. I found that helpful. I would not have known about the frame in the cockpit other wise.

I have a couple of the G-10's and a K-4 and they look very nice. FM has its own PE sets for those. I plan on doing one of the G-10's next year, but i know jack (jgeratic) has done one and it looked good. They do some interesting armour subjects as well.

Cheers guys.

Andy, they don't have a massive range. They were probably best known for their Star Wars kits, which before bandai were considered by many to be the best around. Their armour kits seem to be mainly Japanese as area lot of their aircraft kits. They do have a large selection of later 109 variants as well as a fewother subjects, such as an F-14. The 410 kits seem to be some of their earlier kits dating from the mid 90's.

You have to go looking for them, not somthing you tend to see in the LHS, at least not over here.

Well at least it's a good thing I've been blamed for. I have one built from the late 90's and 6 more in the stash. Like what you did with the cockpit. I don't remember an issue with cowlings but main gear is a little flimsy.

Cheers guys. I did manage to get the engines on last night, not as bad as what i had read. I did find i had to remove the location tabs that are on the end of the wheel bay, they seemed to hinder the engines. Just a little bit of sanding tonight and she will be there.

Well my friend, here’s another one I have listed on eBay but want to keep!  I’ve always thought the Me 410 was a beautiful aircraft. I’m following.

My 410 build has slwed down a bit the last week or so, but finally started to get some where. With the main construction finished it was masked up and ready for some paint.

Then after the primer some paint. First did the light blue on the tail and patches on the side, followed by the grey and green.

I tried for a patchy effect underneath but once again went a bit to far, i keep forgetting my own rule that when it looks like it needs one more pass leave it.

Then time for the decals. There is a seperate sheet for the stencils but this says for the A-1/3 variants. But i did use some that were above the black undersides as this would have covered the lower ones.

Also touched up the underside with some lighter areas and added the exhaust stains. Not sure where that lighter band came from, tried going over it with the thinned colour i was useing but didn't cover it up. I decided to leave it rather than make it worse.

Next up some light weathering washes and add the remaining parts.

This looks fantastic Bish! So how well did everything fit on this? I've only built one FM kit and that was the Millennium Falcon that I just finished in January the fit on it was the best of any kit I ever built. I'm wanting to get one or two of their 109k offerings.

Thanks Clint. No real problems with the fit. I had read a review that the engines were a bit tricky. After some test fitting i noticed that the location tabs hinder it. So i removed those and with a bit of wiggling got them in place. Canopy is a little tricky because the rear sides are seperate pieces but they fit fine.

I have a couple of the 109G-10's and a K-4, look really nice, i am hoping to get to one of them soon.

The Me 410 truly was a beautiful aircraft.  Yours is shaping up to be quite exquisite.  This is one aircraft I would LOVE to see someone refurbish and get one into flying condition.

Thanks Chad. I agree, that would be nice. I believe there are only 2 examples left. One in the US is awaiting restoration and one in the UK on display at Cosford. I believe that one did have its engines run after it was restored in the 80's.

I don't know much about German aircraft a fan of the Mosquito so I like the lines and look of this. Remember reading something don't know when or where about a German aircraft that would have been a real headache, if the leadership had opted to make them in larger numbers rather then the ones they favoured; is this the one the article was thinking of.

Joe, no, i don't think it was this one. If its a nightfigfhter your thinking of, that could have been the He 219. I believe the 410 was Hitlers prefered option for taking on the day bombers and it was sussecesful at that until it came up against US fighters.

Got me thinking as well. Could it have been a jet, like the Me 262.

From what I've read the 410 and the 210 before it were more in line with the He 177, not good airplanes and using up German resources and pilots at a faster rate than the Allies.

Can't find original story but found this on line. He-177 1939-cancelled, other heavy bombers were considered such as the Ural bomber including BF-165 four engine banana bomber capable of reaching New York with a bomb load and returning. Others Do-19, Ju89 and Bu142.         These could have caused havoc over England in1940 but production was prevented by Ernst Udet . Goering and Udet favoured fast light bombers.

Memory was hazy nothing like the model your building, sorry for the sidetrack.

Joe, no worries, i don't mind sidetracks, keeps the thread interesting. As GAF says, there area lot of German designs that could fall into that category.
