I want to build my 1/32 AR 196 floatplane as a weathered craft, what would the correct colour be for the primer used under the normal RLM paint scheme?
Theuns
From what i understand from various net searches, they didn't use any primer. Unlike German armour where the primer colour is often mentioned in books, i have not seen any mention of the use of primer in any of my Luftwaffe referances.
I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Bish is (as usual) correct. Instructions to manufacturers issued in November 1941 called for a single coat of lacquer 7122 in the desired color to be applied directly to the metal surfaces. The major exception was fabric-colored control surfaces, which had a red-oxide anti-fungal primer applied first.
A general overview of Luftwaffe a/c photos shows quite a bit of 'scuffing' but very little chipping except in the case of impacts, shrapnel damage and such. It's likely to become more prominent later in the war, as both material and application standards began to suffer greatly from dwindling manufacturing resources and manpower.

George Lewis:
Early to mid war RLM 02 was used as a base coat internally and externally and even as a camouflage colour. Up to 1941, this colour was used for cockpit interiors apart from bombers that used RLM 66.
You would also find prototype aircraft painted all over in RLM 02.
Did the Luftwaffle use zinc chromate as a primer?
Chasing the ultimate build.
seasick Did the Luftwaffle use zinc chromate as a primer?
Not that i have heard. All interior surfaces were painted RLM 02, including inside the fuselage. This only changed when the cockpits were painted 66.
OK thanx for the info guys.
The reason I asked is that I have a 1/32 AAR 196 and wanted to show some wear and tear on the top of the floats and other areas where paint may be damaged especially with people wasking n the floats with wet sand on their boots .
