Have you ever tried using Archer Surface Details? You can use those to repair lost panel lines and rivets. They apply just like decals, so they're incredibly easy to use and look amazing when the paint goes on. I'm with you on using stretched sprue...takes a lot of practice and skill, and its just a PITA.

Thanks Chad, I really do want to keep the lines, the problem I will have is after sanding the top seam I will lose a lot of the raised lines there. I do not have the skills to recreate raised lines with stretched sprue to make it look right. That will be my issue.
I'd keep the lines because they add character. These older Monogram kits were great back in the day. Raised panel lines and all.

At the plate: 1/48 Airfix Bf109 & 1/35 Tamiya Famo
On deck: Who knows!
After the first coat.......what a mess......I've got a lot of cleanup to do. YAY ME!!
I think I am just going to sand all the lines off the plane, at least the black. All of the pictures I've seen you cannot really see the panel lines anyway. We'll see. The top seam is a horrible mess and I could not see it until I painted the first coat of black.
Prepped for the first coat painting.
Well....I got to work on this for about an hour yesterday. I got the white paint for the air intakes and landing gear done. I had to do a little bit of work on the right side intake as I had a gap that would need to be filled once it was together. I shimmed it with .020 styrene and connected it to the bottom of the piece. Once it is on, it will need just a little bit of filler.
Right on Greg....I won't be able to work on this again until Monday, if I am lucky.
You may be slow but you're still faster than I am, you are already further along with your Phantom than I am with mine.
Coming along fine.
I got to work on this for a little bit last night. I used .020 styrene and filled the wing root gap.
After that I worked on the top where the gap for the seats is. I was test fitting the canopy piece to see where I needed to do surgery. Obviously on the right side where it is touching the side of the plane. The seat bucket would not fit in there any better than that. I will use more plastic and fix it to where it is even with the top of the plane.
Annnnnnd.......If you have never used this stuff I highly recommend it for small areas. It absolutely dries fast, so work quickly. This stuff is the reason there is not a huge glue mess near the wing root.
I may get to work on it a little more today, not sure after packing to head back to Manchester this evening.
Here I sanded all of the lines and rivets as they were too big. They may or may not show on the final product. We will see.
I wasn't going to do this as it usually takes me a while to complete models with lack of extra time on my hands. I have a full time job, literally, as I've worked all of my days off except 1 since my last promotion. Second, I try and do a good job, but sometimes I say "this will have to do". Lastly I am in the middle of moving that will take about a year, so I am between two places right now and this plane is in Knoxville. I have started another Revell F-18E that is in Manchester, so there is plenty of modeling to do no matter where I am. I started this a couple of months ago, however will work on it a little bit each day I am in town. The updates will be sporadic until I get the new place set up and am there full time. On to the model....
I wanted to do this model as it was the first aircraft kit my parents got me back in the 80's. After this kit, I do not want to take any trips down memory lane. I have a closet full of models I do not need older ones.
I did not take a lot of time on the cockpit as it will not be seen too easily after putting it in my display case, but I did paint it. I already had it installed prior to deciding to do this thread. My modeling skills are not as good as some, but they will improve with time.
