Monogram 1/48 B-1B Bomber
Posted by oortiz10 on Sunday, December 27, 2020 3:43 PM

Hey FSM,

I decided to tackle this monster for the 50 Shades of Gray GB. This was not an easy project. Fit on this thing was terrible! I built it mostly OOB with the exceptions of some Fox One decals and homemade FOD covers. I left out the bomb bays and intake trunking. It's painted with MM and Testors enamels.

I know this kit does not build as an accurate B-1A nor B-1B, but I learned a lot for my next attempt. (I can't believe I'm saying that...) Next time I intend to get all the aftermarket goodies and build up an accurate(-ish) and modern B-1B. I'm sure that the next one will go a lot more smoothly.

Here are the pictures:

Did I mention this thing was big? I had to find a creative display method. I decided to hang in on the wall.

Thanks for taking a look. Of course your comments, questions, and criticisms are welcome.

Cheers!

Love it.  My favorite modern bomber.

Holy Cow!!!!  That ate up a lot of wall space!  Great job!  Perserverance and persistence pays plenty.  Plus it looks like a little talent in there.

Looks like you got everything lined up just fine, O.  Nice.  And the dust won't collect hanging on the wall.

I have all the goodies, but I'm going to build a bigger workshop first!

Nice build! I am starting to think about my bone build; that includes displaying. Wall mounting makes sense. How are you using the bracket in the photo? Is it tied to the nose gear, or hard fixed to the fuselage?

What a clever idea to display it.  Looks great on the wall and just think some people say modeling isn't art.

N - i - c - e  build!Toast I just might have to use that hanging method as I don't have much room left. The last couple I gave to the museum opened up a few places but I've got a lot more to build.

Hey Shipwreck, the bracket is a common L-bracket that I screwed into the stud. (Lucky placement.)  You can't see it in the photo, but the "horizontal" length of the bracket has a slot in it, like the "vertical" length does, you know, for adjustments.

I drilled a small hole in the forward bulkhead of the NLG bay and threaded in a small screw whose head is just slightly larger than the width of the slot.

Here in earthquake country, the brackets come with just about every piece of furniture over 3' tall. I figured if it could keep a 6' cabinet upright during a quake, it could keep my BOne on the wall. The weight of the build rests on the forward edge and bulkhead of the NLG. The screw is simply to keep the kit from sliding off the bracket.

I would have loved to have placed the nose gear leg ON the bracket to hide it a bit more, but the gear leg is a bit flimsy and installs flush agains the rear gear bulkhead. Plus, the gear door is there too, so that wouldn't have worked. I had to settle with the bracket being visible.

I hope this answers your question. And to everyone else, thanks for looking and the pats on the back! Much appreciated!

Happy New Year FSM! Stay safe!

Cheers,

Brilliant, O. We do not expect any bone shattering earthquakes here in SC; so I might get away with wire verses a hard bracket. I intend on replacing most of the plastic engines with resin; so I need some way of supporting the extra weight! Thanks for sharing.
