LOL - just when I think my builds aren't that bad... you and Hoss make me realize that I have a LOT more to learn and practice. ;)

Great job. I love the tonal variation in the color scheme. Looks like a mix of several methods/layers. So pleasing to the eye.

For the cowling, did you cut out individual squares to mask the black? Guessing you did base metal - black - mask - and then yellow? Chipping medium over the metal first?

Thanks Dave.  Indeed, Hoss is inspiring for sure.  The paint is several shades of paint using a spatter template and then oil filters.  You are correct on the cowl.  Silver first, hairspray, black, Tamiya tape cut into squares, then yellow.  A toothpick was then used to chip it.

Absolutely love it. As always, your weathering is a joy to behold. Congrats once again. BTW, I have a Tamiya Razorback in the stash and am on the lookout for a good scheme.

Thanks Hoss.  There's plenty to choose from.  Ebay is a good starting spot.

MR TOM SCHRY

WOW, is all that I can say!  That is stunning work.  From the construction, to the painting & weathering, finishing with the basework.  Put this down on the table at the next Nationals and you've got a First Place.

Thanks Tom. Not sure about thatIndifferent but I appreciate the kind words.

Another superb job from the master, judging by this.

There might have been 3 colors involved, noting the differentation behind the canopy.

But a good job nonetheless!

Gary

Thanks Gary. Yeah, I studied that pic for a long time during the paint stage. That looks field applied to my eye and appears to be on the port wing too. Who knows when that was added as this reportedly had several paint jobs in its career. I decided to stay cohesive and use Eagle Strike's interpretation.

Okay, a P-47 and a checkered nose. Excuse me while I wipe away the drool. Surperb work, she looks well used. Excellent.

Thanks Brandon. I hope you're doing well bud.

Hi, Joe-

Ya know, there is not one part of this build that isn't just outstanding. The painted cowl smacks of realism, the camo paint, beautifully done engine and paint wear/chipping says it all. I don't know how you just keep getting better.

Always great to see another one from you, thanks.

Patrick

I believe that I have run out of descriptive words that do your builds justice. You have perfected the chipping effect to high standard. But I do miss your build posts of the past.

May I ask what paint mix/colour the cockpit was painted?

Well done!

Thanks Damian.  Perhaps I should start doing WIPs again. I have a few new techniques to share.

it's my interpretation of Dull Dark Green, roughly half Tamiya flat blue and flat green. Very simple.

1/48 Tamiya P-47D 353rd FG “Butch II” (Finished)
Posted by lawdog114 on Wednesday, August 31, 2022 12:49 AM

Hello, this is the second of the two 1/48 Tamiya Thunderbolts I built. It’s a 353rd FG machine named Butch II, flown by Lt. William Bailey.  Bailey flew 186 combat missions and had 3 air kills and 3 destroyed on the ground. This machine apparently got around and had several different names throughout it’s service life. I further learned that the 353rd pioneered the P-47 ground attack which I thought was interesting as the 56th tends to get all the Jug glory. These men were all heroes to me.

The Tamiya P-47 is heaven in styrene. One of their true masterpiece kits.  Always pure bliss. I added photo etch seatbelts and Ultracast resin wheels. I wired  up the R2800 with lead solder and added brake lines.

The main markings were done with Maketar vinyl masks. I had a little mishap on the fuse letters (SX-B) and the stars and bars, as they left glue residue behind when I removed them. I had to repaint these with different kabuki tape masks I had in the stash. I normal don’t have issues with these and I suspect I didn’t let the paint cure long enough before masking. Decals used were from Eagle Strike and performed great. I also painted the cowl checkers pattern with squares of Tamiya tape. It was tedious but so much better than decals.  The paint was Tamiya’s RAF colors as it was surmised to have been painted like a Spitfire.

Here is Butch II fitted with two 500 pounders ready for a ground attack.

A few in-progress pics.
