If you hadn't mentioned the overspray in the nose wheel well, I would never have noticed it...

Funny thing is, if you hadn't asked for the belly shot, I wouldn't have noticed it either!

Hi O, that's a seriously well done '86, very nice where ever you look. A fitting tribute to a fine old warhorse that served long and well, thanks for the post and great photos.

stik and keav, thanks for the pats on the back. Glad you like her!

Any chance that we can see the undersides?

Well...since you asked nicely...

Oops! Looks like I got a little overspray in the NLG bay when doing some NMF touchups. At first I just thought it was glare or a reflection. Nothing a few swipes with a hairy stick won't fix. No biggie.

Anyway, again, thanks for looking and the compliments!

OK gang, my Sabre Dog is done! this kit was a blast! If you do not have this kit, get one. If you do have it, build it. If you've built it, build another!

Everything is OOB except for the markings. They're a mix of spares, kit and Eagle Strike decals. I used a little artistic license on the drop tanks. The stars were cut from the kit's decal sheet. Paint is Alclad for the NMF. Everything else is MM, Testors "little square enamels", and AK Real Color lacquers. My references showed that these airframes were kept pretty clean, so the little weathering I did was a wash using Flory's water based products.

Let's get on with the photos, shall we?

Thanks for following along. Comments, questions, and criticisms are welcome, as usual.

Cheers!

Hey Rabbit, thanks for the pat on the back. Much appreciated! In response to your questions, let's start with the base coat.

When I started using Alclad, I had never done a NMF before. So, in an attempt to get the best results with Alclad, I used their proprietary primers. I've used their white, gray, and black primers on various builds. I know there are a lot of modelers that say a NMF must have a black base coat, but I'll say I've gotten good results with all of Alclads primer colors. For this build, I used their black under the NMF for the first time. Now, what black primer/base to use? I don't think it matters. I can't say for certain which brands will work under which final coat because I've only used Alclad under Alclad. I'm sure there are some combos that might react with each other in a a negative way, but I can't say what those are. Sorry, but I've only used Alclad with Alclad. Others may know more.

Now, the decals? Some say that you do not need to gloss coat a NMF before and/or after decals. I do. I gloss my paint before decals then gloss after. The second coat over the decals protects the decals and helps blend the carrier film into the previous gloss coat, thus helping make the carrier film disappear. Especially with thicker decals and thicker carrier films. What I have found is a second gloss coat evens out the sheen for a final flat coat, if that is your plan. What I mean is, I have laid decals over NMF without first putting down a gloss coat, then I sprayed my flat coat. The decals protected the NMF under the carrier film, so my flat coat "flatted" the NMF but not the NMF under the carrier film. So what happened was I ended up with different sheens in my final finish. That made the carrier film more obvious! The NMF under the carrier film was still shiny, but the NMF that was not covered by decals was flat. The pre- and post-decal gloss coat helps avoid that. Or, instead of a second gloss coat, I've used a metalizer sealer, like Testors Metalizer Sealer (R.I.P.) with the same effect. The second coat (whatever you use) evens out the NMF so the final flat coat doesn't result in differences in sheen.

I hope that makes sense. I've had some good success using the methods I've described above. Ironically, my methods have resulted in some issues with the decals on this kit. Nothing major, but problems I've never encountered before. I'm going to blame it on the decals.

Anyway, thanks again for lookin'. I hope my long answer helps. If you have any other questions, just ask. I'm happy to assist in any way I can. Keep up the good work on your F-104. I built that kit, too, and it was a challenge!

Next time I post, I hope to have photos of my finished Sabre Dog. Stay tuned!

Looks great!.  With Alclad... do you have to use their gloss black base? or will any gloss black base work?  Im working on an F-104 thats going to be my first attempt at a serious NMF  Also... how are you hiding the carrier film on the decals?

OK FSM, I'm back with a small update. I got the main airframe painted. Besides the base color, I was able to get some panels picked out in different metalic shades, and the radome and anti-glare panel painted. It's difficult to see the various shades in the pictures, but I'll try to do a better job with the final photos.

Here's where I'm at as of now...

As usual, comments, questions and criticisms are welcome. I think I'll work on the fiddly bits and decals next. So, until then, thanks for looking. Stay tuned!

The dog's looking great O.  I just found the old Monogram Canadair Sabre at an antique mall.  You're inspiring me to bust it out.

Alclad is great and not nearly as fragile as others have said it is ,I used bright chrome Alclad over their black primer and the finish really gleams on my Boeing Stratocruiser!

I agree.  I have used it several times now and love the results.  Their gloss black base is really easy to spray.  And no need to clear cote for decals.

The drop tanks are propped up on toothpicks. I just shoved a toothpick into the tanks' mounting holes. I used the 'picks as handles during painting, then I stuck 'em into a hunk of foam that I had to let the tanks dry.

I agree that Alclad is pretty sturdy. Once I got "serious" about modeling, Alclad's products were the first ones I tried for my NMFs. I know there are newer and (possibly) better NMF products out there, but I just got used to using Alclad's stuff, so I'm sticking with it.

Thanks for looking. I appreciate the feedback.

Cheers!

OK FSM, I've spent the past week plugging away at my Sabre Dog. I was able to get the wings assembled and attached to the fuselage. After that, I got the seams cleaned up and detail restored. This kit is a beaut! I needed no filler. None. ZERO. Careful dryfitting and assembly resulted in clean seams.

Once things were together, I sprayed on some Alclad black primer.

After giving the primer a day (or two?) to dry, I started with the primary metalizer color, Alclad aluminum. I got the drop tanks, stabilizers and airframe sprayed.

I am very happy with the results. I'm going to let this layer cure before I go back and start picking out panels with various Alclad shades.

So, that's it for now. I'll post some more when there's more to post. As usual, comments, questions and criticisms are welcome.

Thanks for lookin'!
