Even period photos can be deceiving with the colour shifts that they go through over the years. The only safe answer is "darkish grey"
Chris, the He-178 was on the dividing line for the 02/66 change as it first flew 27 August 1939. Luckily the RLM was unimpressed.

RLM 66, German Grey, is what I used on my Condor 1/48 He-178. Not likely to be RLM 02 as that was for early war interiors.
