A B-17G or even an earlier B-model would be spectacular. The aftermarket items would be amazing to work with!!!!!!! :)

I've built most all the B-17 and B-24 kits over the years in 1/48 and 1/72. I concur with the other opines that Monogram is the way to go in 1/48,and that Academy's kits (including the PB4Y kit) are superior. They build up easily, look great and are still available in most shops and on eBay.

If there isn't a 1/32 scale B-17 on the way, then we should push for one. My vote is for a B-17G model. I know it would be huge but what a great looking kit that could be. If enough of you agree with me, wecould start a new topic to see how much support there is for a 1/32 scale B-17 and to see if the rumors about one being made are true.

1/72 B24 by Academy is a good kit featuring open bomb bays etc.

i have heard that hasegawa will be producing either a 1/32, or a 1/48 b-17. any body know any thing about this. i don't build many military aircraft, but do a lot of airliners.

The 1/48 Monogram kits are two of the most enjoyable kits I've ever built. Big and impressive when complete.

The only problem I've had with them are the clarity and fit of clear parts. I hope Monogram fixes that with newer releases.

My reply is a repeat of the above in 1/48. In 1/72 I have built several of the Hasegawa B-17 kits, they are fine. I prefer the Academy kits, though.

I have built Monogram's B-17G and B-24 in 1/48 and was very pleased with both. Unfortunately I have neither pictures or the models (cats are gone too).I also did their B-29 on a diorama base with a beat-up Marine F4F parked nearby. It was 4ftx4ft these are large models.

IMHO the Academy kits are the best hands down. They're the only ones mentioned in this thread that have recessed panel lines and the B-17's also have bomb bay interiors, not done in the 1/48 scale kits. Also Academy produces several B-17 variants from the B-17B to the B-17G and SB-17G.

In 1/48, Monogram's B-17G and B-24D & J and the Revell B-17F are all you got.
In 1/72, you have more choices. But IMHO the Academy/Minicraft B-24's are the best as well as the Hasegawa B-17's.

The Revell B-17F also has the evil raised panel lines, at least my kit does. That's a lot of territory to cover with a scriber and a ruler!

No one mentioned the Revell B-17F in 1/48 scale. As good as the Monogram B-17G but it does not have all the interior goodies of the Monogram kit.

TEISE is correct about the B-24 Monogram kit, but it is currently out of production. However it has been out of production for a few years now, so it should be back soon. I hope, I hope! It makes a very impressive kit.

I have heard others echo the sentiments of bubbamoosecat regarding the Academy B-17 and B-24, but I have never built them.

In 1/72 scale, I like the Academy B-17's and -24's. Haven't built a -24 yet but the B-17 falls right together and looks good when finished. In 1/48 scale I agree with the others on the Monogram kits.

I agree with NWilliams about the Monogram B-17 and say the same about the Monogram B-24. Both make good looking aircraft.

The Revell-Monorgam B-17G model is a fine kit, hence its' popularity. I have built this model several times in my life. I constructed it once at ten years old and was not overwhelmed by it. It is a fairly simple kit which makes it easy for a relatively new modeler but looks impressive when finished. It is also a kit which lends itself easily to improvement which I believe is what makes it so popular with more advanced modelers.

B-17 and B24 which brand?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, February 5, 2003 1:12 PM
Hello,

I'm new to this forum and would like to ask the modelers out
there which models of the B-17 and B-24 did they find to be
the overall best? My modeling skills are "average" and I'm not sure which scale I want to model but I have narrowed it down to thde 1/48 or 1/72 scale. Can you share your recommendations and/or experience with any you have assembled?

Thanks in advance.
