If anyone has either the Monogram's 1/48 scale F-105D or F or G kits can you tell me if there's an internal weapons / bomb bay detail just like in the 1/48 F-102's and F-106's. Thanks.

I dug my F-105G out and it does not even have a bomb bay. I would think that would be the same for the other kits also.

That's correct!  None of the Monogram/Revell F-105's have a detailed bomb bay.   Since it wasn't used operational except for a extra internal fuel tank it saved them plenty of bucks not to cut molds for it.

Clear Left!

I have both the "D" and "G" kit and don't see any bomb bay.  There is a hard point where I thought you might have one...  I am currently building the "D" with the Eduard PE set.  I'll see about some pictures.

Eddie, that has been the very first time I've ever seen anyone constuct a bomb bay for the F-105, & I've built a few of these kits, dating way back to the mid 80's. I had to save that pic. Very intriguing.  Is that a B-61 from the Monogram B-58 kit?

I applaud you for taking the high road.

Yes it is. I was trying out my scratchbuilding in my early days of kitbashing. Just some sheet styrene and ribbing. My next one will be a bit more detailed.Smile [:)]

Thanks guys!Cool [8D] The reason I did it was I had never seen one either and couldn't find any reference photos to go by, so I winged it. I orginally built this in the early 80's and did an okay job by my standards back then. 2004 rolls around and I got a single seat version that I built gear up. With the extra gear in hand, I decided to redo my 2 seater. I was testing a few new skills I wanted to try as well as soft masking that I had just read in FSM. I also wanted to use some old decals from the left over draw. I built the bomb bay and have been hooked on scratchbuilding ever since. Here's a look at the top side. Thanks for the interest.

I have built the Monogram F-105D, F and G in both 1/48 and 1/72 scale.  They all have the bomb bay door outline scribed on the belly, but nothing on the inside.  The Trumpeter 1/32 D and G both have the internal bay with the extra fuel tank.  I am not sure, but I think that the doors rotated open like the B-24 only inside the fuselage rather than swinging open like the B-17.  I'll have to go back and check some of my reference material and see.  I vaguely recall seeing a shot of the open bay in one book.  The Thuds flying in Viet Nam had two straps around the doors to have something to mount the MER & pylon on and it also made sure the doors wouldn't accidently open

I know this is an old post but I was just browsing around this old post forum and I got to let you know that I have Flown the F-105 .The bomb bay was never used and the pluming inside was removed and the bay was locked up and the master switch in the cockpit removed. Also the inside gen also removed w/ gear assembly which was a heavy assembly.if your decide to open the bomb bay , make sure you do the Natural Metal finish version -early Viet Nam.The early versions had the operational bomb bays.

There you go- that's a post you don't see every day.

Any and all information you wish to share, plus of course it wasn't the only aircraft you ever flew- would be greatly received.

Early F-105's in the 1st three years had operational internal Bombay that housed an experimental medium free fall block buster type bomb that was ment to destroy petro fields just south of Hanoi. It was dropped at least 8 times .Fuel run time was the main problem. So,then the internal bay was used as an aux fuel housing.Lots of aviation experts do not know this.I have flew the F-100d ,F-101c,F-4E and the F-105All versions.Retired -101 missions and shot up by a Mig-17 then crash landed on the way home on friendly grounds. At least I gave someone a victory kill.

That's a truly impressive service history, and thank you for flying for our country.

When you flew the F-100D was it as a FAC?

Only twice I was involved I an actual (FAC) mission which a strike was called in to me from our little prop friends.I then destroyed the target w/ a Bull Pup missile.

Did the bomb bay doors "open" or did the bomb bay rotate like the F101 B and the B-57. I seem to recall seeing something that suggested the bomb bay on the105 rotated.

No rotation on the F-105's that I have seen.A mechanical assembly bar which goes down until it mates w/ the bomb and lifts it into the bay.Remember it is a medium to large single bomb which it supposed to be a Nuke by the original design .

IIRC somebody made an aftermarket kit for the Monogram 1/48 F-105. It had a bomb bay and came with an optional nuke or auxiliary tank. It was a while ago.

Chasing the ultimate build.

The Italieri Ch-47 k kit in 1 /72 and scale has two modified fuel tank housing parts which with a little imagination and surgery will work onthe 1/48 F-105.

The fuel tank parts are 1/2 round like the bomb bay housing and long to the size of the bay.

Their is no known detail set to exist of an F-105- bomb bay for any scale.I am working on a cutaway model of the F-105 from hobbyboss 1/48 which will show the internal Bombay and a weapon installed w/it's pluming .All scratch build. No Photo Etch parts.Photo Etch is a thing of the past.Scratch Build and Resin detail is the way to go.
