Hi Scott,

I assume from your thread that you're planning to build Brian Flavelle's ill-fated Wongo Wongo and if so, you'll be OK with that sheet. The rest of the sheet as originally printed was pretty much worthless as 42-40743 was not the serial for Fightin' Sam but I was told they later included a correction for that. Also, Fightin' Sam (42-40506) was NOT Tom Conroy's Ploesti a/c contrary to the claims made by the researcher.

Pat

I must have missed this back in June.  The decal sheet I have has an addendum sheet with the corrected numbers.  Big Smile [:D]

I'm starting my B-24D next week!  Cool [8D]

Actually, they were Ds, Es, Fs and I believe Gs.  Same aircraft but changes in model designation because of their manufacturing location.  Just like the P-51B and P-51C - Charlie was a B that was built in Dallas.

There were actually many raids on Ploesti, with the first big one being the most famous.  There was actually an earlier raid, but it never made headlines and therefore never made the history books.  That earlier mission is what led the Germans to take Ploesti's defence seriously and made it into one of the most, if not the most heavily defended targets in Europe!  I just finished an excellent book called Ploesti: The Great Ground-Air Battle of 1 August 1943, Revised Edition by James Dugan and Carroll Stewart (I HIGHLY recommend it!!!! Big Smile [:D] Thumbs Up [tup] Thumbs Up [tup]).

The early raids were usually done by B-24s flying out of Libya and later Italy.  There were even missions done much later using P-38s because they had the range and could carry bombs, and it was felt that they might have a better chance at survival then the Ploesti Raiders of August 1, 1943......

It would have been real funny if the automated program somehow edited the photos to "Female Dog" lol.

Scott, I can't wait to see your B-24. You've been building "Little Friends" a lot lately, I'm excited to see how you tackle a bomber...

I'm a glutton for punishment my friend, I'm going to be building a Ju 88A-4 at the same time.  My first two bombers!  Shock [:O]  Laugh [(-D]

I've been meaning to do a decent model of the S.B. since I saw it in 1970. It was sitting apart from the other aircraft next to a flat car with the Goblin on it.  I have been saving some bottles of Pactra desert pink for this project since the late 60s and they still look like new.

It is a cool scheme, so you should go for it!  Cool [8D]

espins1;

I know that Polly S Paints has the correct color of the Desert Pink your asking about, and I think Polly Scale also has it too. Try the Testors website and see if they are still in production

Scott, it may be too little, too late, but here are a few photos of the infamous Strawberry Pooch at WPAFB.

I hope to retake them with a better camera on my next visit. And when you get around to going, let me know. It's only 90 minutes from where I live.

If you're asking about the Pactra paint, yes they are enamel.

Is it safe to assume the aircraft was repainted during the restoration?

Either that or they gave it a really good coat of Future back in the '40's...

If you guys solve this I will bow!! It's a female dog. No pilot I've ever talked to had the slightest (correct) idea of what the colors of the a/c were. And most all WWII photos are B/W or so faded color that you cannot know.

Restoration ruins everything. Can you imagine on "Antiques Roadshow"; this B-24 that you brought in could have been worth 10 Million dollars, but since you repainted it it will go for at most $ 500,000?

You'd think that if an access panel or two had the fasteners drilled out, and a sample was taken around the overlapped edge...

FSM appears to have an automated program that "cleans up" the supposed bad words, but fails miserably as it can't determine context...... My 2 cents [2c]

If anyone can get back to the USAFM, there was one of the original engine and cowls from Lady Be Good on display near Strawberry Bioch...I guess that would be a match
