1/72 Curtiss P-36A Hawk
Posted by viper_mp on Thursday, February 7, 2008 2:02 AM

This is the Monogram/Mattel 1967 Curtiss P-36A Hawk.  I picked this up at an antique mall for $5. The decals were to far gone to be used, so I scanned them into Photoshop and redid them.  This was a fun little build.  Its finished in Floquil Bright Silver.  The red nose, anti-glare panel, red strip, and the entire rudder are all masked and painted.  [the rudder was a royal pain in the #$%].  I had fun one this one, and I am very pleased with how it came out.   It even had the original pedastal with it.

Thanks for looking!!  Enjoy!!

The Old Monogram one was a fine model...

...By the way, this airplane type is a rare example of one of the United States exports ending up as an advisary!

Also, I'm currently reading Pappy Boyington's autobiography and while leaving Burma for China he makes a reference to three "powerful" Curtiss interceptors flown by some AVG vets precluding their flight over to their new base... It was already established that he was in an in-line motored P-40, so it's worthy of note that he made that mention... I wonder if they were P-36s?

Nice build and paint Rob! Love that a/c too, and was wondering about a 1/48th version.....I've looked around, but no luck. I doubt there is the demand.Disapprove [V]

I built that kit in the early 80's BA (Before I had an Airbrush).....brushed it in early WWII colors and she was nice!

Yep, Academy has a current offering in 1/48.  I have that one in my stash, and I have built that Monogram 1/72 such as you have (great job btw).  It was always a neat little kit and those little stands a lot of those kits came with are indeed good memory.

Trexx, those 3 Curtiss airplanes flown by AVG pilots were not P-36s but three  Curtiss-Wright CW-21 Demon interceptors that were bought by China.  They were held in Burma by the British until 1941.  The Chinese were also sold components for 32 aircraft to be built in China but it is unknown if they were completed.  The Dutch also bought some for Java but it was a case of too little, too late as the Japanese demolished the Allied forces.

WIP:  Monogram 1/72 B-26 (Snaptite) as 73rd BS B-26, 40-1408, torpedo bomber attempt on Ryujo

Monogram 1/72 B-26 (Snaptite) as 22nd BG B-26, 7-Mile Drome, New Guinea

Minicraft 1/72 B-24D as LB-30, AL-613, "Tough Boy", 28th Composite Group

 Thanks, bro.

...Yes. The light-weight Demon. Very interesting and obscure type. Hmmm...

Very nice job. NMF looks spot on. Just goes to show what can be done with an older (Vintage) kit.
