P47 gun barrels
Posted by redpelon on Monday, March 3, 2008 1:11 PM
Hi to all Thunderbolt modelers, quick question. I want to remove the plastic gun barrels from the wings and replace with aluminum tubing. I found a company (K&S) that makes some of the aluminum tubing. What would be the appropriate size to use on a 1/48 scale Thunderbolt?

You have to remember that what appear to be gun barrels on P-47 kits are actually cylindrical protective covers, with significantly larger diameters than the gun barrels themselves - say 1" extenal diameters on the real thing.

I'd go for tubing with an external diameter of 0.5mm or 1/50".

Cheers,

Chris.

Also don't forget that the gun barrels are mounted horizontally relative to the ground which means that cross the leading edge at a slight angle.  The do not do along the wing leading edge.

Christ, thanks so much for the info and will be looking for the appropriate size. To think that someone from way over the ocean would be the first, thanks again and take good care. I was aware of the cover, guess I should have explained myself a little better. I just have a dislike for the seams between the sleeves, they are hard to clean up and sometimes of course the plastic just gives way. Cheers amigo from Texas.

Roger that, thanks for the info and will make sure I investigate that a little more. I really enjoy the Bolts and I can find so many decals schemes to use. I found one that is called "The Bug" and will be working on that one soon. On my Tiger tank right now and the Jug is next. Thanks again.

You may already have a ton of pictures of a full scale P-47, but just in case, here are some that I took. I hope they help:

I believe the blas tubes are 2.125 inches in diameter if I remember correctly. That comes to about .044 inches in 1/48. I believe I was able to get some .042 stanless steel tubing (the kind they make hypodermic needles from) online from a company call smallparts.com or something like that. Looks awesome when finished.

The simplest solution is to use tubing that is approximately the size of the barrel shrouds

you remove.  If it looks right to you, that's close enough for all but the pickiest contest

judge or rivet counter.  Enjoy your build...
