B17 - Hopefully I won't be out of action for that long. My goal is to be up and running again by Thanksgiving. ESPECIALLY if tradition holds and the wife takes the kids to Houston for like four days!

I promised more Mustang, and here we go. Wash is finished up tonight. Only problem with this Flory stuff is that you have to wipe the excess off with paper towels, which leaves little paper towel fibers all over the friggin' place. Anybody have any bright ideas how to get them off? Thinking I might try a dryer sheet, but would that mess up the sealing coat?

Doogs: Wow Petie looks great! Maybe wiping the model down with a damp clean tee-shirt? Are the fibers stuck to the model or just holding on with static electricity?

BTW: Good luck with the move.

Try a Swiffer duster rag, will only work if they're being held by static electricity

Doogs The Pete is lookin great man !!!! If I may, go to the autoparts store Autozone, Pepboys, Kragen, Oriley, one of those and they carry a blue paper towel that is lint free. I think they call them shop towels on a roll. They are pricey but I cut a small piece from a whole sheet to wipe down my models with so a roll lasts forever, and you get zero lint or wollybogers on a surface. Oh and they work great, damp, wet or dry.

PS I think Napa carries them too.

oh, vetteman, can you switch the 1/72 mustang for Tamiyas P-51B in 1/48? I decided I have too many shiny mustangs and want to make the 1/72 one have an OD/NG scheme. The Tamiya will get the final decal set form my "Blue Nosed Birds of Bodney" sheet: "The Flying Scot" is the middle plane with full invasion stripes.

Got Petie 2 on the wheels last night...still lots of detail work to do, but the end is definitely in sight now!

Alright, I'm calling it. Petie 2nd is officially off the bench!

Overall, I'm proud of her, but I definitely have some areas I want to work on before I tackle the big 1/32 kit.

As I said I'm going to steal...um... borrow your pre-shading technique for my P-47D. I keep getting trash in the black undercoat though. Going to give the airbrush a serious cleaning out and hopefully I'll have the model ready when the Alclad gets here next week.

Beautiful pony!! That panel line wash really gives it an authentic feel. Love it I take it the paper towel residue problem was solved...?

Every model you put out shows not only skill but also how it is decompression/ therapy for you after a long ardous day at work or with the kids The attention to detail and your painting are skills to be envied.

thanks vetteman! The little P-51 will be hiding out in my Odd Animal GB once I get some free time from my studies.

Well, here's where my P-47 stands.I borrowed Doogs' technique and though there is some trash in the paint and it looks a little grainy from the gloss black always orange peels on me I'm pretty durn happy so far.

You can see where the red trim chipped off on the cowling.

Going to repair the red trim and a little more NM on the tail and I think she should be ready for decals.

Is it tooo late o get in. I've been out of it for a few years. I am working on an Academt 1/48 P-38 and using foil for the fisrt time.

 Haven't started buffing yet.

Gamera N I C E !!! You should be happy with that P-47 The paint job looks just fine from my end, no runs and the contrasting with the black looks right on.

Andy T its not to late at all to join in on the fun. How far along is your P-38 ? Looks like you have the idea with the foil too, but you have picked a tough one for a first time.

Sorry for my absence all, it seems family stuff has gotten in the way again. Hopefully this will be the end of it for a while, at least I hope it will.

Gamera - digging it! You going to add any contrasting panels? Also, looks like on the upper wings you may want to mist a very light overcoat of Duraluminum. Might be the photo angle, but I think the upper wings could use a touch more blending.

Doogs: Thanks, I think it's the light though, the wings look ok in RL. I have went back and sanded some trash and rough areas off the cowling. I hope I don't end up wrecking more than I fix this time.

Actually i have removed the foil. I didn't like the job I did. Maybe the P-38 is too tough for a first attempt. I am going to look at alcad and decide.

Andy T Alclad is a very good paint you can get very good results with and if you dont want to spray with lacquer based paints there is always Talon paint which is acrylic. Dont give up on the foil Andy, get yourself a P-47 or something like it with a simple airframe for a first go. My first one was a Testers P-47 both simple and cheap too. My P-38 was my 3rd foil build and let me tell ya, it like to have drove me nuts with all the compound curves and such, but in the end it was worth it all.

What ever you decide to do just let me know and I will be happy to get you listed on the front page. If this is your first group build dont be shy about asking questions, there are a lot of very talented people in this group who are more than willing to help out.  And I see from your posts you are new here.

Doogs: Went back and reread your post. duraluminum? After post-shading with aluminum I misted that over the model- would duraluminum have worked better? Now that I think about it I think I will go back and do the control surfaces, gun areas, etc along with a few random panels in a different shade.

AndyT: As Vetteman said a P-47 would be good, I've seen people use a F-86 or MiG-15 too. Anything with a more simple design and not as many friggin' complex curves as the P-38.

Vetteman: You have no idea, just look up the 'end forum fascism' or any of the five million 'manifesto' posts by Jdice...

Edit: Vman: I think Aaron wiped the offending posts. Thankfully - I'd rather we all put that behind us.

Gamera wowzers doesnt look like I missed anything from the little I saw. I do hope we dont lose the people who said they wont be back here. Its sad a few can make things so bad in so short a time. Glad I did miss it to be honest.

I got the cockpit parts on my P-47N all weathered and assembled, even installed in the fuselodge while I was at it. Oh yea since I was weathering things, got the engine out of the way, though I'm thinking the engine needs more.

OK here's a close up of the engine. It does have a wash of black oils on it, but as mentioned, thinking it needs more, no?

I think I'll do the P-38 for this build and do it on Alcad or MMM. I'll pick up a P-47 a little later and give the foil another go.

As far as how far along I am. I just removed the pieces from the sprue glued the wings together and applied the foil.

B17Pilot nice pit man !!!! Are the seat belts PE ? As for the engine it looks perfect to me, once the cowl goes over it it will darken a bunch, thats my thinking anyways, so I think another dark wash may be too much.

Thanks, no the seat belts are molded on. The seat came from Ultracast, and they give you two in a set, so I got one for the Tamiya P-47 I'm going to do later (NMF IV, perhaps?).  I highly recommend the seat, also got a set of wheels for it too.

B-17: Fantastic looking cockpit and engine! I suppose you could add another wash to the engine but it looks fine to me.

Andy T: Looking forward to seeing more of your P-38.
