My First Time Group Build
Posted by mustang1989 on Monday, November 26, 2012 8:40 PM

Ok folks. Joe here with the official post to open the My First Time Group Build. This was all started by deattilio on Sept 3 as a feeler. There have been a number of folks who wondered if this build was still going to happen as several people have purchased kits for it and the last post from deatillio was on Oct 6. Bish and I have agreed to host this build together. If deatillio comes back online we will relenquish the control back to him as host. Any how that being said, Bish and I are going to stick to all of the original rules as deatillio had them.

Here are a list of the rules:

Air, armor, auto, trains, ships, sci-fi or figures all wanted – the fact we all started with some form of a model is all that matters

Acquire the first kit you ever built, original or reissue

Apply the masterful skills you’ve gained since that first kit

No after market resin

No after market photo etch

Scratch build details as desired

After market decals allowed

Post a photo of the kit pre-build

Explain when, where, why or how you got into the hobby with your kit

Post photos as you progress

As you build, look at the project at hand to appreciate how far your tastes and skills have progressed with glimpses at the modern kits sharing space on the bench

Set aside OCD and enjoy the build and what got you started in the hobby

Start date: 01 December 2012

End date: 01 June 2013

Let Bish and I know what you are set to build and Bish will get a list going here. Thanks everybody, Joe

AS OF 7 FEB 13 BISH AND I ARE EXTENDING THIS GROUP BUILD FOR A PERIOD OF TWO MONTHS. THE OFFICIAL END DATE IS NOW 01 AUG 13!!!

This is to accomodate those who could not attain kits until a much later date than the start date, for those that were in the process of moving and getting re-set up and due to the fact that December was a busy month with the holidays so not much building could take place. Now lets resume building!! LOL, Joe

I like that. Make the text Italic, move the date down to the bottom of the pic. Maybe change the knife to a box cutter rather than a leatherman. (Just some ideas)

Thanks Mikey.

Well Don´t have proper software to add text to it. If someone likes to add text to it here´s new one. Feel free to use it.

Thanks for the email and the invite, I'll to try to do this. I'm starting to climb out of a financial hole I dug myself into, so, there are no guaranties on this one. I'll wait and see what happens before i get the badge

My first build would be a B-17. Which kit has yet to be determined. But it will definetley be in 1:48 scale. Almost made a typo on the scale, I kept wanting to type 1:8 scale. Can you imagine how big that would be. My apartment isnt big enough LOL.

Thanks again

Ken

Since its pretty much the 1st here now, i thought id make a start. Wow, i dunno what im gonna be able to do with this kit. There are no AM decals for this kit and the kit decals got wet and glued themselves to the plastic bag. Not quite sure what im gonna do. Maybe hand paint most of them and see about getting some number sheets for the serials. Ill figure something out anyway.

The cockpit is non existent except for a seat and an "Instrument panel" that resembles briefly something out of a ww1 fighter. So ill be doing a @&^$load of scratchuilding in there.

The fuselage is covered in flash, light panel lines (which are probably to scale) and lacking any sort of internal detail.

The wings again lack much of the detail were all used to in modern kits, but its ok. The hard part will be the undercarriage. 90% of it will have to be scratched. Theres a couple of pins for the legs and some holes in the upper wing for them to plug into, otherwise its bare.

The engine...what engine? Theres an exhaust nozzle that attaches to the back of the fuselage, otherwise its just an open hole into the interior. So yay lets build an engine lol.

So ive got 2 options. I can stick steadfast to the rules of the build. and take 5 years to finish the kit. Or i can cheat a little and get some resin and get it done in the time frame.

I guess i can go option 3 and skimp a bit on some detail...but...that would irritate the bajeesus out of me. Id hate myself for it. Ill do my best to get it done. But i dunno if i will.

Now for some photos.

Box.

Decals and paint sheet.

The variant ill be doing.

The parts.

Instruction sheet.

Decaling Sheet.

I feel like this "Relaxing" kit is gonna cause me more stress than any others ive built lol.

Dude I'm right there with you on the detail. It looks like I'm going to have to borrow/ steal some parts out of another kit to make the interior work to get away from the AM stuff. The whole instrument panel that resembles a WWI fighter is the statement that caught most of my attention. I'm facing that as well.

Mikey,

It looks like you have the right pics of the decals, just scan them into a computer or have a friend do that. Then all you need to do is print them out onto decal paper. Testors decal paper works great, I make all my decals that way. you can even find pictures online and make them into decals.

I even save the little peices of decal paper. if it's too small to run though the printer. Print your decal on to a regular size paper. Then tape the decal paper over your pic on the paper, and run it through the printer again. Just make sure you don't have any tape where the decal will be printed.

Also, it looks like you'll need both clear and white decal paper. 99.999% of printers don't print white. So the white decal paper will make the white parts.

Also, don't forget the spray can of decal bonder, otherwise the decal ink will run when you put it in water.

Ken

PS, If your computer savy already, I apologize, but you said you didn't know what your going to do.

Parts robbing from another kit is the ONLY way Joseph and I are going to make a cockpit even worthy enough to be called as such on the Monogram SBD. That thing comes with nothing.
