Thunderbolt GB 2016
Posted by rooster513 on Friday, August 26, 2016 11:22 AM

This is the official thread for the Thunderbolt GB 2016. The build is open to all things thunderbolt, including the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, Fairchild Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II, Macchi C.202 Folgore, and the Mitsubishi J2M Raiden. Thanks to modelcrazy & Cdn Colin for bringing the latter two to my attention. If anyone knows of another Thunderbolt, let me know and I'll add it to the list. Edit: The SAAB J-37 Viggen will also be added to the list. Thanks to tempestjohnny for bringing it to my attention.

The rules are simple:

-Any scale

-OOB or aftermarket goodies ok

-Crossovers welcome

-Partially built up to fuselage halves glued together

-WIP pics a must!

-Have fun enjoying this great hobbyBig Smile

The build will start October 1st 2016 & run until October 1st 2017. You are welcome to join anytime during the build timeframe.

I made up a couple of badges that we can vote on and see which we like best. I'm also open to anyone who wants to submit a badge for votingBig Smile

I had AC/DC running through my head while I was making these so I had a little fun with the last oneWink

Any questions please ask. Join up and have some fun building!

Got you down Bish. I made them right in Microsoft word. I found a pic I like and just added Word Art. Anyone else use something different?

I think I shall start with the Academy A-10A in 1/72.  If time allows, there is a chocolate brown Cuban offering on Aztec's Juicy Jugs that I've been contemplating since I got the sheet.

I'm in with the 1/32 Hasegawa Bubbletop, a replica of my Dad's plane from WWII. He flew with the 365th Fighter Bomber Group of the Ninth Air Force. the "H*** Hawks".

The kit is started, but well shy of joining the fuse. I'll get some pics up soon. I'm also likin' the 2nd badge - cool Heritage Flight photo!

Sorry cbaltrin, I think we are going to stick with things named/nicknamed "thunderbolt" for this build. I do want to build a P-38 sometime so maybe a lightning GB is in the future...

I've got the Roster updated...starting to fill out nicelyBig Smile

Hi Rooster,

I think that Ford made a Ford Fairlane Thunderbolt back in the 1st half of the 60s. I have a Revell kit of it, but I'm not going to build it this time.

I'll go for an Academy 1/72 P-47D please.

I like the 2nd badge.

Cheers

Tony

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

I'd like to join in on this. I have a Testors (yes Testors) 1/48 P-47D thats been on the shelf for 2 decades or so. I bought it off ebay i believe. It even came with resin for the cockpit and guns.

I think I've gathered all the paint needed to do the Thunderbolt.  I'm going to try an airbrush camo scheme on it.  We'll see how it works out.  I may just have to actually learn how to use my airbrush.  I just need to learn how to adjust it for different spray patterns.

I'm doing the gray/gray scheme. What airbrush do you have? I have used an aztek for years but reently changed to a trigger brush, the neo for iwata. I love it. I'm getting up there in age and I was struggling with control using a knob on top of the brush. I've found that I can control this brush much better. Aaron Skinner used it to do a 109 in this issue

I have a cheap Harbor Freight special, lol.  I originally bought it for my taxidermy work, which didn't really require much adjustments, none actually.  I used it to spray the inside of deer ears.  Everything else I do with oils and a brush.

If it works for you, that's all you need. I really don't have the control to use it for much other than big stuff and use a brush for details and weathering.

I found this post that I think we might find useful here. It's about the wiring harness on radial engines. http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/2/t/149327.aspx

I used a harbor freight airbrush for years. It's a decent airbrush.  I recently bought an Iwata NEO gravity feed on Amazon for $60. Gravity feed is definitely the way to go.  Much easier to get finer lines. Cleanup is also much easier
