Hasegawa Phantom is ready for mask and Tamiya white primer.  Primer is going to serve as the white base coat and undercoat to brighten up the red paint.

Of coarse I ran out of Tamiya fine white primer and the Hobby Lobby by me still hasn't replenished their stock of it. Been 3 weeks now. I/m just going to shoot the rest whit regular Tamiya gloss white.

Look on the positive side, you won't have to gloss the underside when it's decal time.

Anyone with some updates from their shelf of doom?

Ask and ye shall receive...

Took a break from some other projects and picked up with the Warbird. Here I cleaned off 30 years of dirt and dust and go plowing ahead...

When I started this project 30 years ago, I painted the warp nacelles in a flourescent green, hoping they would "glow" under a black light. Never tested it until now...

When its all assembled should look pretty cool. Anyway moving ahead, I completed the two major assemblies. Here they are ready for paint...

If I assemble the upper hull to the low hull, painting the inside of the whole ship would be real PITA. So I decided to paint, detail and weather (can something in the vacuum of space weather?), the two hulls halves seperately. Then attach the two halves, adress any seam issues and repeat the process for the exteriors.

As for the paint. The subject of ship color, especially this ship is the subject of some debate. Some of the sources I've researched indicated the model used to film the TV show was actually painted grey and filmed in green light. Well, that maybe the way the FX dept went about it but in the end they produced a "green" space vessel on the screen. My job is to represent that "green" in model form and so making it subject to interpretation. I don't want a dark green blob or a bright green booger. I opted for a somewhat muted green so the shading (weathering?) would show through making it look something more interesting (I hope).

To that end I used Model Master SAC bomber green mixed with MM FS 36102 medium green in approximately 3:1 ratio. Here's how it came out...

Next I'll hight the those recesses, ad some shading to those panel lines and pick out some of the raised details on those insides. Put it together and repeat for the exterior.

We'll see how it goes.

Looks like I forgot to hit send On my response but the Warbird is looking really cool. Hopefully you get some more time on it.

G'day Ed. May I buy into this GB? I have a number of prospective shelf queens, but I want to finish a Williams Boeing 247 that I started over 10 years ago. I will post a couple of photos in the next day or so.

just seen this - would a 6 month hiatus count or isn't that long enough to designate a shelf queen? About to start on the cab for the Thunder Model Scammell Tank Transporter (trailer built and thats where I stopped - had been promised a replacement radiator form TM but that hasn't materialised yet so building with wrong part and covering with "dust cover during sand storm") . Anyway, this is where it is now:

Hi Rob I noticed that you're building the Scammel. I have this in my stash and would be interested in your comments.

must admit for a smaller company it does go to well nicely (well the trailer does). Some fiddly pins on the ramp but so far so good.... may start the cab today so will then keep you updated...

Rob, you are more than welcom to join.  6 months is more than enough pause for the GB.

An engine... 27 pieces and still a few more (plus some very small PE). I am going to hold off using the radiator as long as I can just in case TM confirm they can get me one (there are enough components I can build up in the cab to give them a few weeks)...

Well Rob, that little beauty is a kit in itself. I read a review on the Scammel a few months back and it had a couple of interesting points, particularly for the trailer, I'll see if I can find it for you. Did you purchase the PE set?

no PE purchased for this... i know the cab has a few "how to" articles around to improve via scratch building...

it has a lot of smaller parts BUT on the whole goes together well (user error not withstanding). Think for the engine it calls out either the grey/blue or base vehicle colour (ie sand)... Quite like the idea of the blue if it is accurate...

anyway today's build completed the engine (barring small PE bits) and started on the chassis.  Didn't attempt steering, too much of a wimp   (engine just dry fitted for now)

I did find a couple of magically appearing pieces within the engine build. After much searching I believe this is correct:

More small components... ordered the recommended blue paint (think it will do for the SU-122 ans T-54-2 builds planned for latter - think their interiors have a blue part or two) but need to work out if I paint the engine now then look to fit and, if I do, how to mask when I paint the chassis etc

Rob, I found a few pics around the engine, and will load them later today. Also on UTube there is a two part army film showing the scammel recovering a tank.

yep I have that video saved - it is brilliant and will use it to tie down the load - a Caunter painted Matilda (done earlier this year)

cheers Dodgy... that shows just how good the engine in the kit is (the pipe that goes up and over could do with being a little thicker/textured (some filler may do for that). I really do think I am going to paint 99% or the components off the chassis then add & touch up when built
