Some more progress on the Fort. Trying to get top turret finished and make waist gun windows fit. Continuing to modify .50 cals so gun barrels can be installed as the final step.

Yes, sorry you are correct. Didnt even realize they do not have logo or name on front of the box lol.

Here is the current status of both builds. Car is almsot done, rocket is still getting wired up for leds and I need to figure out how to add smoke. Going to hang it up in the kids room. Should be fun.

Latest update. Installed Radio Compartment Gun n Glass.  Trying this Vallejo plastic putty. Not thrilled with it. More like Caulking than putty. I would  never use it on a NMF.  Some guy on yuk-tube said it was a 'game changer'. More like a channel changer -- not watching him again... Angry

Moving on to the flight deck. Need to fix this section which always seems to be an issue on this kit. Mixed some very old slow zap with some acrylic nail powder -- should cure in about 12 hours... Whistling

Hey James (Project510), great to see you jumped on this wagon. I was wondering what happened to your and your son's Saturn project. I'm looking forward to seeing your projects come along!

Speaking of progress, there's some great modeling going on. Guess I need to spend some time on my lil' helos.

Keep it up, all. I'll be back with some progress to share. I promise.

Yeaaaa.. I started a few other projects on the real cars. Got distracted. I also switched the boy to the bigger spare bedroom, and we finally got all his space artwork on the wall so now we need to get the rocket done to call it fully done!

Speaking of, I think I had a bit of a breakthrough haha. Ive been struggling with how to attach the smoke. All of the examples I have seen were on a stand, in the verticle position. Ours will be more of like after take off leaving the atmosphere type of position so I will be hanging it from the ceiling. A user (Hutch6390) on here posted his version in my actual build thread a while back and I have taken his idea with a slight change. I ran some 3mm thermal laminating pouches through the lamination machine empty and came out with a 3 mm clear sheet to glue to each rocket. They are clear so the leds will sine thorugh, and its super light so wont add to much weight. Ill glue the stuffing material with spray adhesive wrap them into cone shape like you see below and insert them. I think this is gonna work great!

cbaltrin, I really like this modification. I have a few USAAF WWII bombers that could benefit from this hack. Would you mind explaining, or showing, your process with a little more detail? I'd like to steal this idea for my builds. It seems pretty idiot proof...but then there's me.

Thanks!

Hi 'O',  I disect a small sewing needle with some side cutters and use about a 3 or 4 mm section to pin the barrel and gun together. The trick is drilling holes in the center of both pieces. I am fortunate to have picked up a good rotary tool (shown below) that can run at much lower RPMs than my Dremel ... it also has a very good chuck.. So I put the barrel in the chuck and clean it up with a sanding stick so it's relatively circular (do both ends). Then I re-insert it into the chuck so the back end is protruding about 1 or 2 mm, and at low speed, I cut a center hole with the tip of a sharp #11 scapel blade. Once I have he center divit created, I follow up with the appropriate sized drill bit , held in a pin vice. The latter part is a bit tricky obviously to get the drill to continue directly into the center of the gun barrel. Luckily, I have a bunch of extra .50 cal barrels laying around from my Monogram B-29 that I am building as the Enola Gay... just in case I mess one or two up Whistling

Drilling the hole in the gun body is just a matter of eyeballing the center point and creating a starting point for your drill bit with a sewing needle held in a pin vice.

Well I hope that was not too confusing...

This is an awesome rotary tool. Well worth the price:

Thanks cb, I appreciate the help. I didn't think about inserting a "post" to reattach the barrel. I'll have to give this technique a shot.

Cheers!

OK gang, I have a little progress to share. Not much, but progress is progress, right?

So, I was able to get the windscreens attached to the second airframe. I also got the upper windows painted on both helos. I used Tamiya Clear Green on the AMP kit. On the Academy, I tinted the windows with Tamiya Smoke.

The fit on the AMP kit is...not good. The windscreen is super-thick and has a different contour than the airframe. Attachment resulted in some significant gaps that had to be filled. I did the best I could without reshaping the windscreen too much. In an attempt to hide most of the seam, I used a very thin strip of Tamiya tape to create a gasket/frame.

Hopefully it won't be too obvious once it's painted.

Speaking of paint, I was able to get some Alclad microfiller primer splashed onto the plastic. The Academy is sprayed in gray, and the AMP is covered in white.

I can see that I still need to do some clean-up on these two little guys.

In the meantime, feel free to share you comments, criticisms and questions. Thanks for lookin'!

Prelim airframe painting is done! All white for the AMP OH-6 and USAF Leopard camo for the WIF MH-6.

So far, I'm happy with the progress. I'll share more when there's more to share.

More progress on the S13

Tried getting my son involved, since he wanted to help. I asked him to decide on a wheel color. We looked at a bunch of photos and he decided on using the chrome pen for the lips and center caps lol. He said it was really hard but did pretty good!

Got the suspension almsot done so its a roller. Just need to finish interior and were good to go. Also, I am way out of practice and need to brush up on detail work. My hands are definitley not as steady as they used to be.

Also, looks like something happened to the window plastic and I have no idea what it is. Ive had this kit in some kind of half built stage for sooo many years I cant remember. Any ideas on how to remove the haze?

Was also really surprised (and happy) at the stance out of the box. Did not have to modify it at all.

GRRRR! This AMP Loach is gonna be the death of me!

This kit's been a headache from the start. Today I had my latest "Why do I do this to myself?" moment with this kit.

So, I have a few days off and was excited to spend some time at my bench. After getting the primary paint down on both airframes, I was looking forward to starting the detail painting, specifically on the white Cayuse. Well, there are no decals sheets (currently in production or to be found) for the airframe I want to build, meaning that I would have to paint the markings.

I sat down to start the masking on the white airframe and got a few strips of Tamiya tape laid down. After looking more closely at my references, I realized my masking was "off". So, I decided to pull up the tape and try again. Guess what came up with the tape. Yep, the paint AND primer.

"SON OF A...!"

Here it is after my first attempt at sanding and feathering in prep for a...I don't know...third(?) attempt at getting the paint right on this kit.

I am this close to giving up on this kit, or at least giving up on this paint scheme.

I am going to put this little guy aside for now and focus on the WIF Loach. I'm sure I'll talk myself of the ledge and get back to it.

Anyway, I just needed to vent...

Oortiz, seems like you've take up coloring Easter eggs? Wink  All kidding aside, your choppers are coming along nicely!

Project 510, Your auto is shaping up quite well. Very clean looking build so far!

Oortiz, seems like you've take up coloring Easter eggs?

Yep, but it seems that there's one egg in particular that I keep coloring...over...and over...

As you can see, I was able to get the paint fixed on my white OH-6. I'm going to try masking and painting this scheme one more time. If I can't pull it off, I'm either going to scrap the scheme and move onto something different, or scrap the kit all together.

On a lighter note, I was able to make some serious progress on my WIF OH-6. I got the decals on, masking off, and the little thing up on its own skids. I have a few minor issues to deal with, but I'm happy with the progress.

I need to clean up the windscreen frames, also, I had one of the windows fall into the fuselage when I was trying to remove the mask. So, I had to deal with that. Hence, the tape. After I get the rotors assembled, painted up and installed, this little bad boy will be done. Hopefully by the end of the weekend.

Now I can pay a little more attention to the white one. *sigh*

Anyway, that's it for now!

Getting closer...

OK, the WIF Loach is closer to the finish line, so I'm focusing my effort on that one. (Truth be told, that's not really the reason. I'm just avoiding the AMP project.) Anyway, I got the main rotor built up. As designed, it's a bit flimsy. So, I added a few styrene strips to reinforce the joints.

They significantly improved the strength and rigidity of the joint, and under some paint and weathering, they're hardly noticeable.

Especially under the rotor disk (cap?).

My little WIF Loach is inching towards completion. Like I said earlier, I hope to have this little guy done by the end of the weekend.

Cheers!

-O

EDIT: Upon closer inspection, it seems that one of my blades moved while the glue was drying. Rats! My angles are a little off. Oh well, can't do anything about it now...
