A few months ago, my dad brought me an old Dremel disc/belt sander that's been sitting unused in their house for, oh, ever. It's far too powerful for 99% of modeling work, but it's epic at one thing - resin pour stubs. Hot knife through butter. Of course it also creates a stupid mess, so I have to set it up in the driveway, wear a respirator, blow it off with compressed air after, etc. But...the Fiat's resin bits are ready for some final cleanup and then priming.

Here is the reworked badge - final size should be 50% or so of this one?

Hi Tigerman.....what about WWI Italian biplane like Ansaldo SVA5...is ok?Or only WWII....Ciao Enrico.

Sure. I had no idea that WW I would be so popular.

Jack, I like it. Can you squeeze Gina in there anywhere? If not, that's fine. I've always been partial to Gina.

Put most of my time toward my P-47s tonight, but I did get a bit done with the Fiat. Cleaned up the cockpit and did a test fit. Not too shabby.

Inside the fuselage, things are a bit dicier. Instead of building and installing the resin as a unit, looks like I'm going to have to glue the sidewalls in then tease the rest in place. Fortunately there's a big old opening underneath to work through.

The IP also looks pretty slick - the kit provides individual PE gauge faces, but I may pull out some IP decals instead. Just have to see how that bit goes.

Also did some scoring along the control surfaces since the lines there are rather shallow. Not sure if I'm going to cut and pose any of them, but I'll probably do some scoring of the cowl, too, since every pic I've come across shows a very shoddy fit up front.

On second thought, that badge looks just fine Jack.

I might get started later today after the Rose Bowl. Ciao.

I did put a second badge together, but will need to be cleaned up if you want it to be the official one.  Image of Gina was flipped  because of her hand positions (hopefully she is still recognizable as everyone's left half is not exactly same as the right).  Another option is to have her own badge and the participants can pick which they prefer for their profile.

Jack

Hmm, I never compared the left one to the right one... hands that is.

Ammiraglio Tigerman, please consider running the end date out a little further and I'd be able to join.

Alright gents, color questions time...

First, the exterior. While PCM lists the full-on Italian for all the other colors in both the Fiat and Macchi kits, they unhelpfully label these colors just SAND, BROWN, and GREEN. Well, I picked up Model Master Italian Sand in prep, and it looks, in my wife's words, "like makeup". Very pinkish/flesh colored. Nothing at all like the color profile:

I mean, the sand in the profile is yellow enough that I'm considering using sandgelb or maybe even dunky as my starting point. Unless anybody has any insights into these colors (as far as I know there's no straight "verde" in the color schemes and this one seems far more vibrant than the others shown) I think I'll fall back on "if in doubt, go for awesome".

Second, the interior. This is apparently the FS match for verde anticorrosione:

http://www.colorserver.net/showcolor.asp?fs=34227

However, looking at this (yes I realize it's a resto, but it's the only color cockpit source I could find) it appears to be much closer to a 50/50 of green and yellow chromate.

Personally I find the hideous neon green a lot more striking than the color that looks suspiciously like mint ice cream, and I've read that Fiat may have used its own different verde anticorrosione (say what you will about the Germans, they enforced that RLM rather well). Any ideas either way?

Wish I could help. I need some advice in armor base coats in either Tamiya or model master acrylics.

Doogs, I'm with you. this color stuff is kickin my butt. I feel like a novice again. My classic airframes instructions says light gray for my macchi cockpit. I'm thinking the green was so light it almost looked gray, close to the fs # you posted. and as far as the sand, is it middlestone, or sand brown like rlm 79? and bruno mimetico dark earth, or red brown...?

Doogs - regarding the G-55 interior, seems the I-ties had a discussion about this over on the Stormo forum.

According to a directive sent out in 1941/42, all interiors were to be painted Grigio Azzurro Chiaro 1.

For the exteriors haven't dug too deep into that one, but as always beware of reproduction artwork.  Sometimes the illustrator fancies his own interpretations, or the printer may have cranked up the yellow ink.  Again, quickly referring to the Stormo site they have a listing and swatches of different camou types and I didn't notice the design you are doing - must be very rare?

tigerman -According to my Squadron book on Italian AFV's , as of March 18 1941, the official colour was Saharian Khaki, approx. FS20260.  Unfortunately I can't find any paint manufacturer for this.  When I input that number to the online FS chart , looks like yellow ochre to me, but does not mach the artwork from the book.  I'd say add khaki and some white, but then you'd end up with German dark yellow, so maybe that would do?  If you use acrylics, LifeColor does a set for Italian AFV's.

I plan to build Bronco's CV3/33 along with an upgrade kit from Brach Models.

Okies, I think the badge is done - or do I need to put Dean Martin in there too?

regards,

Jack

I saw a Model Master color called Sand that seemed close. I might have to revisit my old hobby shop for the paint or just get something that looks close. I'm obviously not ready to paint, but did get some pieces together last night.

I love the badge, no Dino needed. Wink Just need it resized.

Thanks Jack - I'll do some more digging for the interior. I actually found a Vallejo paint that looks like a dead ringer for the crazy green of that restoration Fiat - Golden Olive. Hesitant to use Vallejo, though, since then I'd have to use it as a base for the canopy frames, and it's not exactly the toughest of paints.

Thing is, the register on the profile artwork looks fantastic. All of the other profiles on the Fiat and other PCM kits I own (Macchi 205, Spit XIV) are about as dead-on as I can imagine. The "sand" is notably more vibrant than the tan color on the other Fiats. The green is somewhat more vibrant. The Grigio Azzurro Chiaro looks exactly the same.

Came across a forum post elsewhere mentioning that this Fiat came with a base of Verde Olivia Scuro 2 over GAC 1, and the sand and brown were added atop as an experimental finish. This isn't the exact plane, but one with similar camo applied:

I would love to participate, but I don't really know if I want to say yes as long as I don't have my airbrush yet...
If I have one, you can count me in, I really love italian warplanes and I have a few of them somewhere in my stash, but i'm mostly thinking about building this one!

I really love this kit since I saw it, also because of the fact that I've been in cavalino to.
Now I'll just have to wait for my airbrush and then I'll look at how much time I have left to pull this build of and decide if I'm in or out

Man, you guys are really cranking in this GB, I just barely got my box opened.

Here's the kit I'm building, Itateri CR42 in 1/48..

Here's an AB41 that I built a while back, too late for the GB, but thought it would add to the armor quotient here.  It's another Italeri kit in 1/48.

Caption states this is a Fiat G 55 Centauro fighter of Mussolini's Italian Social Republic in the spring of 1945 in northern Italy.

Hard to tell the sand colour due to sun reflection, but is not like the yellow as seen on the side of the intake on bottom of the fusi.
