1944 Group Build
Posted by Bish on Monday, December 16, 2013 1:07 PM

This is the official GB thread for the 1944 GB. In the past two years, these 70th Anniversary GB's have been run by Sub revolution. Unfortunately he is not able to get on the forum at the moment, so on behalf of the group, Schatten Sparten and myself have agreed to host the build.

The rules will be the same as the other two anniversary GB's. It is open to anything, civilian or military. land, sea or air, as long as it is shown as it would have looked in 1944.

As far as military subjects go, 1944 saw the end of the casino battles, the invasion of France, both Normandy and the South of France. Arnhem, battle of the bulge, Warsaw Up rising, the end of the siege of lennigrad, Operation Bagration, the Marianas Turkey Shoot, numerous island battles in the pacific, the first use of Kamikaze and many many more.

So, rules are pretty simple.

1- Any subject, any genre, as long as it looks the way it did in 1944

2- OOB, or throw as many extras as you like.

3- Crossovers are fine.

4- Progress pics are a must

5- Try and include a bit of back ground info on your build when you have finished.

6- Most important of all. have some fun.

The GB begins on 1st Jan 2014 and ends Dec 31st 2014. kits with only a little progress, no more than 20% are allowed.

I don't really see this GB as being mine and SS's, but it belongs to all who want to take part. So, I am open to any ideas or suggestions. There is a thread, started by Stikpusher, discussing the idea of this GB. So perhaps we could keep the discussions there leaving this for the actual builds and discussions there of.

http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/general_discussion/f/9/p/157438/1702738.aspx#1702738

For this year, we are going with a choice of 3 badges. The first one by yours truly follows the theme of badges that Sub went with.

The second, provided by wayne, is rather different and I think a great idea.

And third, this rather nice badge by Spartan which has a nice 1940's feel.

Feel free to add one as soon as you sign up.

Temporary roster and build pics.

I think I'll start this one off with my entry:

I'll build an Eduard Hellcat (royal class):

As far as markings go, I'm leaning towards Alexander Vraciu's aircraft, based on the USS Intrepid in February 1944 (decals robbed from Eduard's F6F-3 profipack)

I might add another build, probably a vehicle that saw combat in the Battle of the Bulge...

I'm in for sure!  What a great GB!  I'll join with the 1/32 DML German V-2(#9002)!  Might be a little "extra" items for a small dio base, but that is the official entry.  How cool!  Thanks for picking this up Bish and SS!

Eagle: Sounds interesting! You're on the list!

Bish: Yes, it does come with a special "goodie". Nothing fancy like pieces from an actual Fw 190, but a replica of the Hellcat's checklist for take-off and landing:

Hmmm, I love a fresh GB. Let's go with a 1/72 Academy P-47D 'Eileen'. I have sprayed the interior colour, but that's it. I hope that keeps me under the 20% limit. I wanted to use up the paint when I did my Frog P-47 earlier this year :)

Cheers

I'm just taking it one GB at a time.

I will join with an 1/72 Airfix P-51.  Apparently it comes with 1944 decals so I will build OOB.

Just sent an email to my LHS to order it

Count me in as well.  (Of course, I have to finish my '43 entry first.)

I plan on going with a 1:48 Mosquito from either 464 or 487 Squadron RAAF as they flew in Operation Jericho.

This will be my first non-single-seat-fighter/non-US warplane.  So, lots of firsts with this build.  I think the manufacturer will be Tamyia, I'm still researching for who builds the Mk VI.

On the bench:  Tamyia Mosquito Mk. VI for the '44 group build.  Yes, still.

G-J, Tamiya do a Mk VI and it's pretty good  I think. Do you have decals for it ?  I think PD Decals did them years ago, not sure who else. I'm pretty sure they're in my 1/48 RAAF stash somewhere.

I'm in with:

Tamiya's V-1 Flying Bomb 1 48 scale. I don't expect the V-1 to be a very long and drawn out kit.

So I'll do Jimmy Stewart's B-24 by Revell (the new kit they just released), and it will be 1 48 scale as well. Does anyone know of any decals for Jimmy's airplane?

Thanks

Like I said elsewhere, If you need any help, let me know.

Welcome aboard guys.

G-J, you and me both, I still have to finish my109 for the 43 GB.

Ken, nice, we have a V-1 and V-2. Not sure about those decals, I have a set for Jimmy's aircraft in 72nd, not sure about 48th.

Thanks Bish, I did find the ones for 72 scale, I'll keep looking. Just a thought: If I can figure out the right size, I could copy the pic of them , make them bigger, and print them out myself.

And if anyone knows of any good pics of Jimmy's plane, I'd love to see it.

Thanks,

Ken

I am in- (I better be, right?) I am looking at definitely one, and perhaps two builds. One ETO(an AFV), and one PTO (a ship)

I'm in with a P-51B of the 328nd FS. Probably either the ProModeler or ICM kit in 1/48.. anyone have opinions on either kit?

I like em both. The ICM kit is supposed to be a modified clone of the Tamiya kit. The Promodeler Mustang is a retool of the original Monogram B kit. I have both in my stash.

I have the Tamiya P-51B in my stash and it looks like a very good kit, so if the ICM 'stang is almost the same, it should be a good kit...

I have most 1/48 P-51s in my stash, Monogram (including the ProModeler reboot), Revell (they did a seperate 48th D kit in the late 70s), Otaki (since reboxed by Airfix and AMT/ERTL), Accurate Miniatures, ICM... all except the Tamiya kit... I do want to get their Korean War kit to rectify that. I have read that the fit of the interior parts on the ICM kit is tricky.

Good line up already guys.

Ken, I had a check and could find any 48th decals. I think Jimmy flew in several B-24's. The decals I have are for male Call, I have found some pics on line. I could also send you the image from the decal sheet I have if you want, not sure if that will help.

Stik, you better be in. This is all your fault Wink

There is also decal set  for Jimmy Stewart's B-24 'Nine Yanks and a Jerk'. No pinup graphic at all, just the motto/slogan in white lettering.  Iliad design made them both, but only stock them in 1/72.

I guess with that post, I'll throw my hat into the ring.  Put me down, but undecided atm for kit subject.

Jack

I've built the Tamiya P-51B some years ago as a 3 Sqn RAAF aircraft. I don't think I've ever built a better kit.

I will contribute USS North Carolina (BB-55), in her 1944 livery, from Trumpeter, 1/700 scale.

Checkmate: I'll add you to the list.

Jibber: The build list is updated with your name. Just tell me when you made your decision...

Tony: Did you build one of Tamiya's Jugs? They are the best 1/48th kits I've ever seen...
