What I Want To Do...

Who makes those kits in 1/48? They must be HUGE! I know of all those in 1/72, but not in 1/48.

Curious Valkie. I looked at the GB and you list all of those good old AMT kits, But they are 1/72. Sanger resells a vac 1/48 Buff but I didn't see where that was the kit.

As far as that particular aircraft, it must have been a great experience to be associated with them. I have a number of good friends who were at Barksdale. They went on to form the backbone of the corporate logistics team at FedEx. That's a story...

Mr. Morrison, the kits are all 1/48 scale.

Hi, Plankton.  Huge is correct.  All four kits ARE in 1/48 scale.  The XB-70 has a length of about 32" (with the pitot tube installed).  the B-52s have (give or take a fraction) lengths of 26.5" and wingspans of 31."  They were made by AMT.  I found and bought them all at the same time in a small hobby shop in Mt. Lookout (Cincinnati, OH) about 15 years ago.

I used to have a 1/48th scale B-52 kit back in the late 70s. Yeah they are huge! LOL! Like a yardstick wide (or something like that) wing tip to wing tip. I may be exaggerating a bit but sadly I had to toss it away last year during a massive clean out at my dad's house attic. A fun build no doubt. Coincidently I'm still trying to figure out what happened to a couple of kits of mine (both unbuilt) - a Tamiya A-10 warthog and a B-52 Stratofortress kit. The B-52 kit I had came with Griffiss AFB markings and the kit was in 1/72nd scale. Griffiss AFB (currently now a Business Park after the base closed during the Base Closures back in the late 80s early 90s) is about 15 minutes from my home.

LOL, BlackSheep, yep a yard stick seems appropriate for these monsters.  The XB-70 stretches literally half way across my whole desk surface.  It's really been a challenge.    Truthfully, considering the size, I'm worried about airbrushing them.  The XB-70 is pretty much ALL GLOSS WHITE and the buffs will be gloss white on their entire undersurfaces.  I'm feeling many light coats and lots of buffing in my future.  I flew into Griffiss once (as a passenger) on a KC-135A back in the late '70's, but don't remember much about it.  Castle AFB in California (also closed now) was where I did my B-52 ramp pounding.

Are you sure about 1/48?  A B-52's wingspan is 185 feet, so at 1/48 it would ring in at around 46" wouldn't it?

Wow, Chanter, good point!!!  The actual model wingspan is about 30" which would equate to 1/72 scale.  Wow, did the math on the XB-70 as well and it works out to 1/72, too!  Just pulled out the box for the KC-135 and it's clearly marked 1/72 scale.  Don't have any of the other boxes (space limitations).  I stand corrected, I guess I just experienced a "senior period"!  Beginning with GMorrison, my apologies to all who questioned the scale!!  Guess I should have double checked, but I was "positive."  Guess the same rule I use for woodworking applies here: "measure twice to cut once."

BTW, I go by Al, but my first name is Allen, too.

You are correct Chanter. It was 172nd scale, not 1/48th scale as I thought.

Good to meet you as well!  At my church one of the elders is "Al" and so, jokingly, I've become "the other Al."  Perhaps that's applicable here, too.
