Gamera

Hey cool Eagle, yet another version of the good ol' 234!

Thanks Gamera.  Since I did the /2 (and the surprise /1) for the Longest Day GB, I have really enjoyed the 234's!  I didn't get the /3 until right at the end of the GB, but Bish said it would qualify for this one!  Bonus!  Now all I need to do is get the /4 and my collection will be complete!  And my journey to the dark side will be complete!  I'm going to stick with the Italeri 234/4.  I really like those kits and after Bish showing me the sprues for the Dragon 234!  Uhhhhh, I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet.  Embarrassed

Looking forward to that one eagle.

gamera, no, not really. I was watching one programme over the weekend, and it included the well known footage from the battle of the Bulge, with the German troops moving along a road littered with allied vehicles, and some other footage from the eastern front. TV companies are the same all around, they think if they just throw in some footage of Germans, no one will notice.

It did have some Tiger footage though.

Hey Bish,

I'd like to officially enter this GB with a Testors/Italeri 1/35 Sd Kfz 234/3!  I know...another 234!  Can't help it....love them little buggers!

Eagle90

i have one of those too. this is a good way to get into a new genre. you now understand the basic construction so the build will be faster and you can take all the lessons learned from the first two. do two more after this and you have a set for a group category at a contest.

Hey Wayne.  I agree!  This was a splendid way to get into armor.  I am crazy about these 234's.  I even picked up a few smaller armor vehicles (222, 223?) from an estate sale!  Going to cut my teeth on some tracks in the Monty/Rommel and Orphan GB's!  Well, they are vinyl tracks...but tracks non the less!

I'm actively looking for a /4 now, so if I find one before the GB is over.....well, never know when I'll pull another surprise build!

Gee Eagle, I should have pulled out the Bronco Staghound so you'd have some company with the whole war-wheel thang!  Guess there's still time if I get the Jumbo done in a reasonable time...

Eagle: Don't know when I'll ever get to it, but it looks very good in the box. You might want to check Squadron sales- they tend to put the different versions on sale regularly- guessing it's not a big seller.

Whoops, Squadron is having a Father's Day sale so I looked it up. They must have had them on sale as a blow-out - Squadron doesn't seem to carry any Bronco products now. Sorry...

LOL! I noticed that when I looked for them myself.  No worries, I'll get one sometime.  Half the fun is looking for a kit!

Thanks

No, not to late at all Nomad. Entries are open right up to the end. Only thing I would ask is, are you sure you have markings for that vehicle that fit the time frame. Its just that this kit is an Ausf C which was replaced in early 1943 by the Ausf D and you would need to be certain that the vehicle your building was actually in use after June 1944.

The Panzer-Lehr-Division used the c version of them in 1944 in Normandy. I will try to make the markings for them as I do not have any decals of that division.

Very cool Nomad, one of the first 1/35th kits I ever built- way, way, back when!

Thanks Gamera but I think that I will not enter the GB because I have been told that My builds and dios are not up to standards. I work with what I have and that is that. I am on a limited budget and can't afford all the items or buy the high dollar kits to keep up with everyone.

I love the comments on tips to improve my skills and all but I see that I am out of my class with all of this.

Sorted, i have not seen that particular marking before either. I think i have some of the Div's L insignia decals, though when i built a Panther II many years ago i painted that.

I would never have expected to see an Ausf C that late in the war, nice find.

Hey Nomad, Bish's issue was this is a post-D-Day GB and the C model was an older vehicle. I don't know of anyone enforcing any sort of standard to the builds- everyone of every skill level is welcome unless I missed something. There's nothing wrong with your work, I certainly don't compare myself with some of the top modelers here or I wouldn't be posting anything!

It's not anything that Bish said. It has to do with another set of posts. I am trying to build as best as I can but it has been many years and I have just got back into modeling. I am so far out of touch with all of this that it will take me a while to get things right.

i'll be blunt; that's crap!

your builds are fine and you are willing to have them critiqued and listen to the advice of others who have already been where you are. i have followed your AT dio and you take constructive criticism well. your next build will be better because you have had mistakes pointed out and suggestions to keep you from making many of the mistakes most of us have already done in the past. i picked up a number of pointers for my next dio by reading that post.

the only way to improve is to hang with folks with more experience. and, being on a limited budget, you WILL discover cost effective techniques of benefit to many of us. building small gun dios, not using PE that cost more than the kit, using scrap wood for bases are all techniques as valid as painting with multiple airbrushes. opening yourself up to constructive critiques helps us improve our judging skills to help more folks.

hell i'm doing 1/72 and sci-fi GBs and i don't build in either of those. and wait til i start my first airplane. HA! that will be quite amusing.

all of us will benefit from your presence in this GB SO JOIN AND HAVE FUN, LEARN A LOT AND TEACH US SOMETHING.

and now i am going to take my little 150mm field gun dio, which is too small for the gun and use the base for a 75mm field gun which will fir better, AND I WILL WATCH THE ELEVATION OF THE GROUND AND THE FRONT SIGHT as was noted in your at dio.

i seem to be quite verbose this AM. time for a walk and back to building the SS-25 frame.

After reading what you posted waynec I agree with you. I just got overwhelmed with what everyone was saying to fix with the dios that I could not figure out How to fix them. I have not felt well the last few days with my disability and that had a factor in my thinking. I sometimes misread what others are trying to tell me,I have to work on that.

with that being said what do I need to do about entering this GB? I have the model completed I just need to get the right markings on it for the Panzer Lehr Division. I am going to try to make them with paper and white glue them to the model and then put a clear mat finish over them. Do you think that would work?

Hey Nomad, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just finish the anti-tank gun diorama as it is and then apply what you've learned to the next one. I've learned if you keep going back to fix one model you'll never get anything done- just chalk it up as a learning experience. In fact the second one you posted, the German with the field glasses, is good, something small and simple lets you try new stuff without getting bogged down in details.

All you need to enter a GB is the approval of the host, in this case Bish. However; did you say you have finished the model or am I misunderstanding you? The idea is to enter with a new model and then build it alongside everyone else. If you're done do you have another one you might be able to start?

In any case Wayne and I are just trying to help- it's ultimately up to Bish to decide what is ok by him or not.

And finally don't get too wrapped up in things here. It's just a model, just a hobby. Relax and have fun with it- if you get too serious it might as well be work right!?!

Well then I guess I will have to wait till I can get a new model. lol  I know that you and Wayne are trying to help me and it's nothing that you have said. i just took another post a little to hard. I will try my best not to do that again.

Nomad, as the other guys have said, I would not worry about things. I am not sure exactly what was said elsewhere. I know that sometimes comments, suggestions and criticism can come across in a slightly discerning way. We do occasionally have discussions on here, which can get a bit heated, about what sort of advice should be given if at all. My own personal view is that as loing as comments are given in the right manner, its then up to the builder about how they deal with them. As the others have said, its a hobby and is meant to be fun. Some get fun by just putting a model together, others get fun but making it as accurate as possible.

As a rule for a GB, the build must either be upstarted, or partly under way, usually 20% or so. But I am always happy to cut the new members some slack in the GB's I host, and besides, I am a sucker for a 251. So, if you still want in, and I hope you do, post some pics of how it is now and we will take the build from there.

Okay Bish thanks for the words. It will not happen here I promise. Here are three photos of the SdKfz 251 Ausf C. Hope you like them. I made the Panzer Lehr Markings with paper.  Hope they look okay.

Hey Nomad, first I'd like to reiterate what everyone has said.  Don't worry what someone else thinks, or if someone gets too critical.....the way I see it...if they don't like it, they don't have to look at it!  Simple as that.  It's a hobby, not a life and death situation, so just have fun!

Now, I think your build rocks!  I'm just starting in armor and the weathering you did is great!  How did you do the mud on the tires?  That 251 has been around the block a few times!  Great work dude!

Same here Nomad.  Don't sweat it man.  Some people take this hobby wayyyyy too seriously.  There's a great bunch of guys in this GB, and we're here for the fun.  Heck, I build mostly WWI aircraft, so talk about someone who is out of their league.....

The thing is, I've participated in many a GB with these guys, and they're awesome to hang with.  You are going to have a blast!

That said, I should have some pics of my Panzer IV up soon.  Got a bit done on the hull and the turret..... a lot different than building a bipe, that's for sure!

BTW, I'm diggin' that 251.  That's some good stuff!  Yes

Thanks guys. The mud is baking soda and paint. Mix it to what you want and glob it on. Looking foward to seeing all the photos of the builds. Mine sits on a dio base that I made.
