Hey Waynec. I like to join but not sure which I want to build. I have a few Robotech kits (man I loved that series.) I also just bought Mobius' Viper Mk I, and have a resin kit for Robotech's Alpha Beta fighter joined as 1 fighter. Ok I decided, going with the resin Alpha Beta fighter combo.

so please sign me up with this kit. I tried starting it a while ago and just got primer and a coat of red on. Guessing I didn't wash the resin pieces good enough as the paint and primer are peeling off.

hello folks, this is an old bandi kit from the Robotech/Macros universe. however, it was also used in the 80's board game from Fasa, Battletech.units, so lots of different markings and paint schemes.

Well I doug through my stash this weekend and found my Zentradi battleship.

What's even weirder is the price tag, i got it for $4.00 in 1985.  i think now it's about $40  yikes.

Yeah, I remember a local toy store had a massive pile of American repackaged - I think Robotech kits- on sale for  $4-$7 dollars or less. And now I see the same kits on the internet for $40-60 bucks or more.

Sigh.........

Here's a little X-Wing update:

I'm planning on building this as if it were flying in combat.  I have one of those acrylic tri-pod stands that I will display it on.  So I need to fill in the openings that the kit supplied display stand fits into.  I used some Aves Apoxie Sculpt and mashed it into the openings like Play Dough.  After it hardens I will sand it smooth:

I've attached the exhaust nacelles and glued the LEDs inside them using 5 minute epoxy resin:

I've also attached the circular parts that go inside the "burner cans."  The plan it to cut out some clear plastic circles, insert them into the cans from the rear and mist them with clear flat to diffuse the light inside:

looks like MEDUSA. i have found the easy way to fill hull holes, like motorized holes in older tamiya armor is to glue sheet plastic over the hole on the inside so the putty, packed in from the outside, has a surface to pile up on.

I thought about doing it like that but in the past I've had cases where there were little bubbles in the putty and after sanding they left little craters that I had to fill with CA glue afterwards.  That happened on a few airliner models where I was filling in the windows.  If I mash it in from the back it tends to fill a little better I think.

Plus, the Apoxie Sculpt had a really good grip to the plastic.

Thanks Gamera!  To be honest though, this is sort of a practice kit before I build my Fine Molds X-Wing.  Don't get me wrong...I still plan on doing a good job...but I'l be trying out some painting and weathering techniques on this MPC X-Wing that I haven't used before.  So we'll see how it turns out.

Thank you, as well, Rob.  Although I'm only gonna light up the engines for now.  I'm tinkering with the idea of lighting up the cockpit using some fiber optics (which would be another new technique to me) but I'm not sure.  You see, there's a big opening in the cockpit floor where the pilot's legs go and it might be more hassle than its worth to block out the light.

I went back to the first page and looked at the roster with the box art photos.  Nice touch waynec!  I like that idea.

I haven't done it for the past few builds I've posted but I used to include a thumbnail at the end of the pics so people could see exactly what kit was being built.  I liked it when other people did it because many times I decided to get a kit based off of somebody's posted photos and it was nice to see exactly which kit it was.

i am certainly out of my element in this GB. since this is a full armored body suit and would be considered mecha which is allowed, yes.

'eH, tIj nuqneH (welcome aboard) or however they say it in that universe. I REALLY AM A GEEK.

hey fly-in-hi thanks. i'm doing this in braille scale GB too.

I've made more progress on the X-Wing.  I had to come up with a way to either make the wires disappear or make them look like they are part of the model.  I this case I did a little of both.  I drilled out some holes in the engine parts and ran the wires through them and into the wings.  This way they look like part of the plumbing:

I may even add some other plumbing using copper wire.

Fly-n-Hi

If your using molybdenum magnets (which is what they look like) I'd not use two as they can be hard to get apart, as I'm sure you've seen, and I would expect them to damage the model over time. Check out using some metal like a paper clip to give it some room to move so you can get the grip to give but I'd do a bit of testing. I'd be tempted to use some shims to stop the hatch moving too.

Are you going to try and move something past the magnet? It will grab anything metal you know so it could be worth putting the magnet on the hatch as it may be easier that way too.

I've been working on my Herb Deeks kit which has a lot of sanding but as its resin I've spent my time in a mask otherwise I'd be coughing up something solid!!

Fly-n-hi: Cool, I think I'd have wussed out and put the battery in the base, I like your idea since now you can fly the X-Wing around the room! Be careful with those magnets- don't want too much 'Force' holding the hatch in place!

Phil, thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I've noticed that the magnets grip each other too strongly so I definitely won't place them in a way that they touch each other.  Putting one magnet on the door instead of the brace sounds like a good idea.  I just need to come up with something metal to place on the brace now.  I'm not sure a paperclip would work, though.  Maybe I could press a metal thumbtack into the brace.

And, yes, I have thought about placing some shims in the fuselage to keep the door from being "sucked" in but there are already some shims molded into the plastic to help the builder place the door correctly.    Once I figure out for sure where the magnet is going I'll have a better idea of what to do.

I've got some time to figure it out since I'm still a ways off from assembling the fuselage parts.

I cut out these clear pieces that will drop into the cans at the end of the engines.  You can see one of the clear disks in front of the right part and left part has the clear disk in it:

Here's a pic where you can see it more clearly in the left part:

I will spray some clear flat over the disks. That way they will diffuse the light instead of having a spotlight effect.

Looking good guys!

I think it's time to tell you what my mystery build is going to be. Wink I finally got the confirmation from my LHS' owner that it got posted and is on its way to them.

It's Anigrand's resin Star Destroyer complete with a custom lighting kit:

I have no clue if I'll be able to finish her within the timeframe of this GB but it's sure as hell going to be a big challenge for me (that's a huge junk of resin there)...

I hope you like my choice of subject Wink

Cheers, Clemens

That's going t be a beast! The postage must have been close to the cost of the kit. I hope you have something strong enough to take the weight!

Oh, I wish it was! Embarrassed

The postage isn't cheap at all (70$) because this baby has to go all the way from the States to Austria. It doesn't even come close to what the kit itself cost me... Tongue Tied
