World at War 1939-1940 Group Build

Neat Group Build!!  I'm in with the new tool,  Airfix 1:48 scale , Hawker Hurricane Mk-I.

Here are a couple pictures of what I have done so far, which is basically the cockpit.  I have been doing some test fitting of the fuselage, and see a potential problem with fit, at the wing root.  Nothing crazy, it just means work and sanding, and I hate sanding a LOT!!

I got more done over the last few days.  The fuselage and tail are together, and the wings have been joined as well.  Once things dry, I'll post more pictures.

Some photos to share on build progress - German Field Kitchen (Gulaschkanone).  Base paint - German Grey (Vallejo) - wheel - spokes old wood with oil paint. Metal parts base painted and apply some oil wash for rusting. Next up some washes to german grey base paint.

Looks very clean for a field kitchen that gets pulled by horses on dirt roads. That will change once washes are completed. Using some AK weathering - washes - dusting effects. Start work on (kitchen help) figures soon. Uniforms during May-June 1940 period. Armor86

Freddie - looking good! I built that kit and ran into a minor filling issue on the underside of the fuselage where it joined the wings. Glad to see you caught it early.

Armor - I like how that's coming along. Can't wait to see more.

Well, I got some work done on the floats. These things have huge panel lines that you could hide a 1/48 rifle in. All my reference photos show them being pretty smooth, with rivets more than panel lines. So I decided to slather the putty on them, fill them, then run my new ponce wheel over the putty.

I was more than a bit heavy-handed in applying the Perfect Plastic Putty.

But after sanding and the ponce wheel treatment, they came out like this. They're currently drying after being sprayed with primer.

The floats are bare aluminum, so I will most likely need to do a little more seam cleanup on top, since they were a little rough.

Thank you Brandon.  Yeah, there are a few little bugaboos, (Port side wing root to name one) but all in all, a beautiful kit!

Here are a few progress pictures of the 1:48 Airfix, Hawker Hurricane. 

I love the kit.  It has some VERY nice surface detail, and the interior of the cockpit and the wheel wells is freakin terrific. 

I found that there are a few things that you will need to watch out for, should you decide to take a crack at this kit.  The only major issue I found, is with the fuselage to wing join.

  On my kit, there is a gap on the port fuselage to wing, right below the cockpit.  There is also a pronounced step at the front-lower-wing to fuselage join.  The same issue can be found at where the fuselage joins the rear of the lower wing, although not as bad.  All can be cleaned up with a little TLC, but the plastic is soft, and you'd better be more careful than I.

If you look close at the pictures, you can see where those issues come up at the front and rear of where the lower wing, meets the fuselage.  Still a little more I need to do there, but she's coming along really well.  I hope to get some paint on her within the coming week.

Gee, eight months since my last post! I have had bit busy with my work. My plan was to finnish Fokker during Christmas when I was off work. But that turned to work my *** off. We have four premiers in a row in week and half time. So...

But anyway. Now it´s ready.

Today, 6.1., is 76th anniversary when Sarvanto nailed six bombers in four minutes.

Trabi - Nice Fokker and pilot combo! And even on the anniversary of that attack. I like it, especially since you don't seea lot of those.

I was working on the Lublin last night and got the floats where I wanted them to be, primed them and went to add the braces. There were some minor fit issues, and one problem with the rear bracing being warped.

I decided to cut the struts and re-glue them. I used solvent glue to melt them together, then super glue to strengthen the joint. Test fitting the the fuselage looks good at this point. Some cleanup will be needed on the lower attachment points, but hopefully not too bad.

Next up was finishing the cockpit. These had wooden floors, and I've never painted one before. I painted the whle thing Tamiya buff, then came back with Tamiya flat brown brushed on really thin, leaving brush strokes to hopefully simulate wood grain. I'm ok with where it is, but it's no work of art or anything.

I have to say, switching to Micro Kristal Klear as an adhesive to PE changed my life. This cockpit went together really easily. The Part PE fret didn't include belts, but I am assuming there was some sort of lap belts on these, so I added some from an Eduard set I have.

Now all that's left in the pit is mounting the instrument panel and putting it in the fuselage.

Lostagain: Nice three tone camouflage, your wash really brings out the detail. I know what you mean about paint pealing off the tracks when you fit them on, that seems to happen to every Tamiya tank I've built with rubber tracks. I think your 7TP has turned out excellent.

BrandonD: Nice start to your floatplane, the photo etch sheet will bring some good detail. Those floats are lookin' great.

Fis3: Great interior work on your Hurricane. I also hate that when you have to sand a grind parts to fit.

Armor86: Nice looking field kitchen.

Trabi: Great job on finishing your Fokker.

Iron Annie is really taking shape, yesterday I glued on the main landing gear and covers. Started to paint the tail wheel, finishing up on touching up the paint. The leading edge's where RLM 70 & 71 meet RLM 65 needs touch up. As a size comparison I got out my 1/48 Bf 109. After all painting is done, I'll attach the three engines, bottom antenna, top rear gunner.

That head-on, close-up view is particularly impressive; imposing and even menacing.  Nice work, Dan. 

Hey Checkmate, is this build only 1 SEP 1939 and after? Or would the Nomonhan incident (known by the Japanese) or Battle of Khalkhin Gol (as it is known by the Russians) be able to qualify for this gb? The battle lasted from from May until about mid September of 1939 but the specific model/diorama I'm thinking about doing would be in August.

Oh, I don't think I want to be too inflexible on this.  There was a lot of fighting going on in Asia before the Polish invasion, which kind of melded into the Second World War.

And since the flighting went on at Khalkhin Gol into September, I think we can accomodate you.  When you're ready with some more information about scale/kit/subject, I'll add you to the front page.  Please let us know!

I wholeheartedly agree, while 1 September may be a good official start for the war in Europe, Japan had been conducting war for years before that. I have a bit more research to do on a small diorama idea I have, but since this thing will be going on for awhile I'll have plenty of time to jump in. I'll let you know once that research is done.
