World at War 1939-1940 Group Build

July 30 update on the 111...

Being an early Lindberg model, the details are pretty sparse. Not much in the cockpit...

I decided to model the Heinkel with the engine cowlings glued in place, so no need to paint the engines. HereI just painted the exhaust...

I then proceeded to the landing gear. I first paint the interior of the wheel wells...

With the wheels and gear complete, the wing halves can now be glued together...

Looks very good, Mark.  Funny how they chose more detail in the engines than in the cockpit.  Nice work with the landing gear.  

I have the 111 painted and glossed, ready for decals. The kit didn't come with the tail swastikas and this being a 1/64 scale kit, aftermarket decals are virtually impossible to find. So I'll have to improvise here...

Nice work, Mark!  Great smooth finish.  Should take decals pretty well when you find the right ones.

1939-40 Europe. What stands out in my mind is Dunkirk and the Battle of Britain. Leading the fight for the Germans is the infamous He-111.

Have a Ventura Bf109 B/C to build.

I have lots of decals so I'm not sure which one will be 1st.

Good selection, GT.  109B/C's don't get as much attention as some of the others.

Glad I didnt pay big money on the batch of Ventura kits I picked up.  They do have recessed lines but the sprues are very crude lacking other detail.  There are no shelves, pins or slots to help guide you in essembly and there are items you have to scratch build.

Going with white 10 which is actually a 109D but from what I can tell the only differance from a C is a more powerfull version of the Jumo 210 engine.  Seems like the 109Cs were relegated to training squadrons and the 109Ds were quickly swaped out for 109Es.  The Ds went to night and training squadrons relativly quickly.

I've not heard of Ventura before.  Hope the construction goes well for you.

Chugging along on the Ventura Me 109.  The fit isnt all that great so this is going to take a while.  Not sure if they are still aroung but Ventura was out of New Zealand.

That looks like a difficult build Ed, but it will be well worth it.

CMK, I thought I should get back to this GB. At the ripe old age of 52 I seem to have developed a Panzer II habit. I'd like to change my build from the Airfix Spitfire to this please.

Good enough, Tony.  I've updated the front page.  It's a nice choice.  Looking forward to seeing it go together.

And for some reason I started another kit.  It's the old 1/48 Monogram Me 109E so it works with the decals I have for Poland.  I will be building the 109E as Red 14 to go along with White 3.

Very nice, Ed!  I've liked the 1939-era camouflage on Me-109's.  I'd have to check the front page to be sure, but I think I built one in 1/72 for this GB back when it started.  Good alternative to the mottle finish.

Yikes, Tony!  Individual tracks.  I haven't built any armor since the day when they were one piece rubbery stuff.  Hope it goes well.

I got some paint on the undersides of the 109D and 109E.  Not very exciting but its progress.

And progress is always good to see, Ed.

Masked the 109E canopy and shot some green on it.  I have to play around with the 109D canopy some more though.  It's a vacuform canopy.

Good looking paintwork; makes a nice change from the usual grays.

And here are both 1939 and 1945 both rounding the corner together.  It always amazes me how small the 109 was compared to some of the other aircraft.

68, those are some old 109s you have there!
