i would also post in airliners and aircraft. look at some of the entries in the GB schedule to get an idea on rules you might want start date and end date. i am hosting my first 2; BRAILLE SCALE as i took it over from someone and SCI FI because i went on sci fi forum and asked if we had done one and someone replied "WE ARE NOW, THANKS FOR HOSTING"

How does one suggest a GB?

I know what your thinking, but I am too new, don't know anything about it, and don't have enough street cred to try to host one.

I was thinking of a Boeing build. Anything Boeing from their first "Model 1" to their latest, what 787? Of course this would include the venerable B17 or B29 or 727.

I hope this the right place to ask this. Please forgive an old fool if it's not.

Yes, this is the right place.

There are rules for GBs that you think of and put in you start page. The best way to learn this is to read what others have put in for their GB. A Boeing GB sounds pretty good to me. I just recently started a B17.

The best way to ask about a GB is to put out a feeler, which by the way, is what you posted. If you get :say" 10 people interested. That would be just the start

When you think of a question. Ask in the correct category. Look down through all the listings and post it where you think would be the best place to ask.

Who monitors all the participants to see if they need encouragement, or is it a free for all once it's started?

I'm sure everyone here loves this hobby and, like me, wants to build EVERYTHING. So I guess you just let it run itself once it starts, or is there more participation from the host?

I'm a very quick learner, and I'm taking notes.

Steve, anyone can host a GB and its up to them to keep things going, come up with the rules etc.

The thing about new members starting a GB isn't simple a case of getting some creed. As I am sure you can appreciate, when ever you join any established group, it does take a little time to get yourself known. That as much down to the new member as it is down to how welcoming the group is, and I must say you are off to a good start. When it comes to hosting GB's, its generally good advice to take part in a few before hosting one. I was a regular for about 2 years before hosting my first and some other, like wayne, took even longer.

It not only means you get a feel for how GB's are run, but also get you known on the forum as someone who is committed, rather than someone who might start a build and then just vanish because they are bored with it.

If you do want to run this GB, might I suggest looking at what other GB's are currently running, we have close to 30 at the moment, and consider if there is room for it currently or if maybe it could be fitted in in the future. You might want to start a feeler thread in which you can put the general rules, start and finish dates and so on. then you can see if there is enough interest. Some subjects are more popular than others.

I greatly appreciate the Flying Fortress, Steve.  I have several in the stash and haven't built one since Bish's 8th AAF GB a couple years ago.

I believe I will host a build next year, after I check the end dates of existing GB's, test the waters (it looks like hogfanfs and checkmaking02 are in), and join a few GB's to get the feel.

Right now I would be looking at June 15 2015 to celebrate the first flight of Boeing's first Model 1 B&W seaplane.

So, what do the rest of you think? A Boing Build mid 2015?

It would include:

Any Boeing built design, military or civilian, any era.

OOB and AM ok, I'll think about crossovers.

Any joint Boeing AC, such as hogfanfs F/A 18,

Let me know while I do my homework.

Yup, I'd commit to a Boeing build in 2015.  I have one Airfix 1/72 Fortress left and several Hasegawa's.  Not sure which one I'd contribute.

Does Boeing have a logo you could use for the badge?  Or is that under copyright and verbotten?  I recently picked up Hasegawa's SBD Dauntless, and the package is marked "Produced under license from Boeing Intellectual Property Licensing Company.  SBD and Douglas are among the trademarks owned by Boeing."

I didn't know Boeing even had anything to do with Douglas!  

Just did a quick google search.  Boeing has lots of logos.

Maybe they'd appreciate the free advertising and positive public relations.

That is a good point. As you saw, there are copious amounts of logos from old to new. I have plenty of time to check copyrights.

So am I.  If I remember right, the B-17 had a Boeing logo in the center of the control wheel.  Sharp-looking.

Yes it did. I have bee to Boeing's Museum of Flight several times and took this picture.

Bish gives good advice, and I agree (though he has not said it quite this way).  Before running a GB, try signing up for some and try them out.  Show some of your work.  Post some "Work in Progress" threads on a build you're doing.  Build up a reputation and credentials.

I've been here over 2 years and have not run a group build.  Don't be fooled, it's a lot of work.  There are excellent modelers on this forum who have never run a group build, but their WIP and Completed threads are great!  I always think that if I want to build something, there are plenty of group builds I can fit something into.  If I can support a current GB instead of starting a new one, I think the host will appreciate the participation.

OTOH, the Boeing GB sounds interesting.  Could be good cross-over between the civilian and the military aspects of aviation.  Wonder if Don would be interested?

Steve, glad you found that link useful and that also the comments have not caused offense. It can be all to easy for people to take these sort of things the right way and throw their teddy out the window.

I like the idea of a company orientated GB. I had thought about doing a German one before but the timing has not been right. Like many here I am also interested in the history behind the builds and I like the idea of GB's run dates having some link to the subject.

Your June start date is a great idea as hopefully by then we will have a few less GB's and it give you plenty of time to get a feel for it. I would suggest looking at some of the GB's and seeing the different ways in which they are laid out. I like to have the first post for the rules etc and a second for the roster and completed builds. Other do this all in one post. Some people will put the completed pics after the roster others will put them within the roster and so on. Just see which you like the best and which you think will be easier for you to organise.

Once the GB has started, its important to keep on top of it and try and post regularly yourself. If it goes quiet for a while, just stick with it.

If you plan on doing a feeler, I would suggest about 2 or 3 months before your start date. So that would be the start of March or April in this case. You can iron out the rules, deal with any confusion, with a subject like this you might well get questions about whether certain subjects are aloud.

For example, Boeing now own McDonnell Douglas and N American. So would aircraft built by these companies before the acquisition be included. I think a build like this is not as straight forward as something like an Fw 190 build for example, so may need some thinking about.

Also you can get your badge sorted, if you are not sure how to do one, someone else will be able to help. Then I would plan on starting the GB build thread one month before your start date.

I will defiantly be in on this one. I have a couple of B-17's including an RAF Fort I I would like to build.

CheckMate, I used the Junkers company logo for the Stuka GB badge, and didn't have a problem, but as the company is now defunct, I am not sure if that would make a difference. I like the idea of using the Boeing logo, but it might be worth Steve just checking with Tim or Aaron first.

From what I have been able to find, Douglas merged with Boeing in 1997, the year after Boeing bought N American. So I guess they now own the rights to those companies aircraft.

As for copyrights and logos, it seems folks have become very proprietary about them.  Read recently about a legal altercation between Duke University and the John Wayne estate, over the commercial rights for the word:  "Duke."

I didn't until I looked into it after seeing your post about Douglas. It seems in a number of industry's everything is getting controlled by one or two large companies who have swallowed up all the others.

Sometimes it gets to the point where your afraid to open your mouth in case you say a word some one has the copyright to.

You've already got a lot of good advice regarding group builds. One thing I would highlight is the "street cred" aspect. This site is well known for what I term "drive by posters". These are new members who have just discovered the site, post a lot of questions and comments and then vanish within a couple of weeks, never to return.

When a "Drive By-er" decides to start a group build, it often vanishes with him unless it is a popular subject and a true regular member picks up the reins and sees it to completion. Because of the tendency of new members to vanish, many people may be hesitant to join because they don't know if you'll be here when it is scheduled to begin.

Another phenomenon about group builds is that the GB thread will stretch for pages and pages (usually over 300 posts) long before it ever begins. There are people who are turned off by umpteen pages of discussion before you ever get to see anyone put glue to plastic.

New members often show up with a new kit they just bought. They found this site after they bought the kit and Googled the web for some information on it. They'll reply to some 5 year old post as if it was posted earlier that day. Then they want to put a snazzy group build badge in their signature like everyone else. So they'll start a group build with a subject that includes their new kit, even though there are several group builds scheduled or already running that they could join that their kit could fit in with. They want the badge and they want it now. I rarely see those GB get off the ground nor do we see their new kit built.

Personally, I tend to not join GB until they've begun and people have started posting and I've yet to bother with a GB badge.

you have the final say on the patch. i have done a few for other folks. sometimes i will get specific suggestions and pics, other times just s "WHATEVER YOU THINK WILL WORK." my badge building philosophy is do something that stands out but fits such as different shapes OR lots of color OR plain and gray.

some folks add a patch when they start, many wait until they finish.

i've been fortunate with my 2 that i have participants encouraging others so i don't feel i have to comment on every post. may be right may not.

once it;s up and running really all you do is monitor and post the finished pics. the roster doesn't have to be as fancy as mine with all those pics. i just wanted to try it and guys sent me the kit box pics and i do graphics arts for a living so it doesn't take me much time.

did BOEING build things other than planes? i consider planes targets though i do have a couple of CHINA CLIPPERs in my stash.

I understand perfectly what your saying. This is one reason I'm still testing the water and starting the build 10 months from now. This should give time for members to get to know me and my builds.

I have so far joined 4 GB's and have no intention of leaving. I'm not one who just wants a badge, I really enjoy the hobby, and being a member of a community who understands me and my hobby.

As far as maybe just wanting to build a new model I just acquired. I have been building for 50 years, mostly models that no one ever saw. Right now I have 35 models at my bench that need building. This includes armor, aircraft, ships, cars, rockets,artillery and wooden ships.

Since I brought up this GB so early, the build will probably only be 6 months long. I wouldn't drag it out. I also love reading all the posts and reading everyone's thoughts and ideas.

the only way I won't be around is if something unexpected happens to me.

did some research. i could look for an old BOMARC missile kit.  i may have to swap one of my BLACKHAWKs for an APACHE. BOEING makes the PATRIOT SAM and i know a 1/72 is coming out this fall so that's a possibility. also they make the AVENGER light SAM system and i have a 1/35 on a HUMVEE and on an LAV so plenty of none aeroplane possibilities. and all 3 are warwheels.

oh and the INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION.

That sounds great. I would enjoy watching a missile build. If a kit of the ISS was available, that would be wonderful. I have ideas for future builds such as "Man In Space" (which would include Si Fi) and "Seaplanes"
