Here's my first offering for this GB, I'll do my second (Braniff 727) as a crossover from my "Boeing Group Build" starting in June.

Well, when I was ready for paint I sprayed gloss black acrylic as a base for the Alclad, then sprayed the Alclad. It looked awesome! I started masking the fuselage for the gray, lifted the tape (Tamiya masking tape) to move it slightly, and lifted the Alclad and the black base coat. Apparently the acrylic base didn't adhere to the plastic. So I removed the paint and started over. This time I started with the light grey enamel and then sprayed the Alclad. This time it came out blotchy, with areas of dull and shinny spots. So then decided to go old school. The silver is Testers silver enamel with Testers MM light grey enamel.

MC, sorry that the first Alclad paint job didn't stick but the end result is still excellent!  You didn't waste any time, either!  I'll copy it to the finished post on page one some time soon.

I feel like a slacker now.

Steve, nice looking MD-80!  Just curious, did you only coat the plastic with an acrylic base prior to spraying the black gloss undercoat?  I'm by far no expert when it comes to this, but I've had problems before using acrylics as a base layer first without using some sort of enamel primer that will actually "bite" into the plastic. (just a thought)

I'm actually getting ready for my first step towards using Alclad.  I'm going to be painting the leading edge surfaces on my 787 with a couple different colors of Alclad.

Looking forward to seeing the 727 finished in the Braniff blue jellybean scheme.

On the Bench:  Lots of unfinished projects!  Smile

Steve, what scale and kit will the Braniff be?  1/200 Hasegawa?  1/144 Airfix?  You might have said already but I missed it.

Looks like the DC-10 is coming along nicely.  Looks like it is a fairly good size kit even in 1/200 scale.

Fly,

The 727 is an 1/200 Hasegawa, I have a few other GB's that just started, but I'm so excited to build the 727 that I may just go ahead and start on it early.

jelliott,

No, I just went with the acrylic gloss black first. Next time I'll defiantly start with an enamel primer prior to the acrylic gloss black. I like the look of the Alclad with the acrylic undercoat, besides, I don't think (don't know for sure) the acrylic has as much chance for a reaction to the lacquer as an enamel base.

Sorry I am a little late.  I have been quite busy!

Here is my offering -- thanks to ModelCrazy and his generous donationBig Smile  He gave me the second part of his two-part kit.  He built the MD-82 out of the kit so I will be building the MD-87.    Hasegawa 1/200 MD-87 in American Airlines livery (beautiful!)

Hello everyone!  I hope your builds are coming along nicelyBig Smile    Mine is coming along quite nicely.  Hasegawa has engineered a real beauty. The last (and only Hasa kit I built was their 1/32 F6F. I was in 6th grade.    If you see this ModelCrazy, how were the decals with your 82?

I added a bit of Tamiya filler to the two gaps left by the -- belly cover -- if you will. You insert the wings from the bottom, then glue the cover in place. I had to be careful when filling the aft part of the cover. I did not want to fill in the recessed gear door detail. But I took necessary pictures for scribing if necessary. I was a bit sloppy with the filler!

A few minutes of wet sanding and we are; as good a new

When the fuselage is put up to my work-light, you can see the filler. I thought it was cool.  Hasagawa has engineered the fuselage to come together horizontally as opposed to vertically. Youou can see the little bits of filler along the side

But once out of the light, you cant even see it

I cut the pin off of the vert stab so I could get a flush-with-the-fuselage fit. Not much of a modification, but one none the less.

And here is how she sits tonight!   A little "artsy" shot for funCool

Mike,

That kit just falls together doesn't it. The decals went on very nice, no problems. I like the way Hase put the seam along the side as well, the decals cover it up.

I found out acrylic doesn't stick to that plastic very well. If you use acrylic, be sure to apply an enamel primer coat first.

Just received my spray booth yesterday.  I picked this up from that online auction/shopping site.  Now, I can start spraying inside since its getting too cold to do it in the garage.  I'll be putting on a final primer coat this afternoon and then hopefully start working on the final steps for painting by this weekend.

I completely agree about the seams on the side!    Thanks for the heads up on the paint. Sorry you had problems with it. But either way, yours turned out beautiful

Hello everyone. Tonight I got quite a bit more completed. This list goes as follows:

1. Sanded small seam on engine nacelles

2. Engine nacelles glued in place

3. The gear-doors were rather thick so I thinned them down. They had a huge seam on them so I killed two birdies with one stone there

Now its basically all paint and decal work form here.  Tomorrow I will lay a coat of primer on.

Here are a couple of shots I thought you chaps would find interesting.  I placed my 1/200 scale Hughes H-4 next to my 1/200 MD-87.  What a giant that H-4 is -- the wing span of the MD-87 is less then that of the span of the horizontal stab on the H-4.   The H-4 is almost finished.         Side note: I bought that Tamiya Mossie in the background for $5 still sealed.  What a gem of a kit that is! Highly recommend!

Mike, That 87's looking good, I love that H-4 as well. I had one somewhere, but I can't find it lately.

I noticed the Pt-17 in the background. I'm hoping to start a Boeing Group Build in June and If you wanted to join, you can use the Stearman as a project. Just a thought.

Thank you, Steve!    Unfortunately the Stearman is 40 - 50% completed.  I got put off by the rigging, so I put it on the back burner for now lol  What is the topic of the group build going to be?

Anything Boeing, or Boeing owned, which includes McDonnell Douglas, Bell, Etc. and produces helicopters, space, misses, fighters, bombers airliners (of course) and any era. The field is huge and only limited by your imagination. The build would start on June 15 2015 - June 15 2016 to commemorate  the 99th - 100th anniversary of Boeings first airplane the Model 1.

Hey Fly,  my dad is giving me one of his old kits i'm going to pick up this week.   My questions is: would it be okay for this group build?   Looking at the box, the side of the fus says " Alaska-Washington Airways".  Google says an airliner is a "large passenger aircraft"   I suppose compared to a Cessna 150 it's larger lol  Would you accept it or no?   If not, no worries!

It looks like it comes with "Alaska Coastal Airlines" decals as well. I will just have to see when I pick it up

Here's some progress on my DC-10.  I've filled in some slight seam shadows on the fuselage using Mr Surfacer 1000 and sanded them smooth:

I don't know what it is that I'm doing but I always manage to have at least a few seam shadows on my airliners.  I figure its because of shrinkage when the glue dries.
