MRME:It's not too late to join at all bud. We still have about a week left as a matter of fact. Looks like rommelkiste has got you covered on an answer about the 4x4 question.

Rob S.:It's cool to see classic cars in other countries. I was in Korea in 1994 and saw a 66 Mustang there. It was a crowd favorite.

Hi guys, you might say this post is jumping the gun on the start date a little but what I really want to show here is a product I have been using for a few years that has helped me a BUNCH.  Most of my builds are started from a built-up of a kit I find for a cheap price or maybe is given to me.  Sometimes this is a great way to get a kit or parts that would otherwise hurt the pocket book if you bought the kit new or bought a vintage out of production kit.  I am sure some of you have tried to un-assemble a built kit or semi gloo-bomb and find  that lots of parts get damaged beyond use.  I have used the Freeze it method, soaking in Purple Power for days and some others but this has worked great for me.  I use Testors Model Master Acryl, #50495 Dried Paint Solvent.  I apply it to the joint with a small brush, just like you would liquid cement.  Wait a few moments and pry on the part and presto!  It takes care of the glue joint and I have a part intact.  You then can file and sand the part and save much of you project.  I don't know how this will work on super glue joints or heavy liquid cement areas but kits that were assembled years ago with tube glue come apart very well.  If its a real gloo-monster, I would recommend you pass that example up.  Here is a pic of the product.

Should you try this stuff and find you don't like the results, it is also a great brush cleaner for all kinds of paints.  I have not found any it won't clean up.  It will work on the plastic some but not like liquid cement or thinner. just rinse in some water when you finish your tear down and back to work.

Here is the 29 model A build up I started with.  It had some heavy glue spots and thick paint.

I was able to break this thing down and only break one part, the rear bumper bracket, which I will not be using anyway.  The whole mess went into the Purple Power bath for a day and much to my surprise I find it was molded in white!

The only thing I don't think I will be able to use is the wheels, which were assembled with at least a half tube of glue by the original builder.  I have plenty of spares so that won't be a problem.  With some sanding and files, I can have these parts ready for their new life soon.  Next time you find that old built kit at the right price, pick up some of the Acryl and go for it.  I have saved well over a dozen old bombs with this stuff.  Next time, I should have some work done on the chassis of my 29 dirt racer.

Nothing ever fits……..and when it does, its the wrong scale.

This is very interesting for sure Rommelk...we normally just bin these things or assume they are 'done' forever and that's it. Very interesting for sure. Thanks for this.

Hi all,

Well I screwed the paint job up on the 37 Ford and it's currently soaking in PP. I guess it was a little to cold when I sprayed the second coat. Paint just didn't adhere. It was ugly hehehehehe.

Rommelkiste, I'm looking forward to your projects. They are always interesting to see.

LOL!  Eric, don't feel bad, I have made LOTS of paint jobs ugly!  Heck, I have made lots of projects ugly.  I remember the first contest I ever entered, I think the entry fee was $2 per model.  The judges told me they would give me $4 if I would leave it in the box.  They were trying to get people interested in the hobby, not make jokes about it.  After that I found out about glue and threw away the tape.

You will get the paint smooth.  At least you didn't fumble around and drop it on the carpet like I did in the Corvette GB!

I guess i'm in with the Revell 2013 Challenger SRT8. If police cars are permitted, it'll be in police livery.

Next time you find that old built kit at the right price, pick up some of the Acryl and go for it.

Thanks for this tip also! Say what removes enamel paint well? I'm here in my hometown for Christmas and managed to go out to my parents house and pick up the last three kits that I built as a kid and will be stripping one of them for sure.

Stang, I feel, and this is just me running my lips, that Purple Power works pretty well for most enamel paints, like the Testors stuff.  You can pick it up at a Dollar General, Parts Store, Wal-Mart or most any store that has a car section that keeps oil, wax and the like.  Purple Power is a cleaner-degreaser.  Soak your stuff in a container.  If it gets a little tough to get the paint off, good old Easy-Off oven cleaner will help do the trick.  Get the regular flavor and not a cheap knock off or Lemon scented version.  If you can't or don't have either of those, Brake Fluid does ok too.  I have some friends that like Alcohol, the 99% stuff from the drug store.  I have never tried that.  I like building junk out of junk and besides, everything I own is junk!  If its not bent, rusty, worn-out or the threads stripped, I can't use it.

Mustang,

I agree with rommelkiste on the Purple Power. Enamel usually takes about a week or more but it will strip it off with no harm done to the plastic. When it's done I take a water hose and wash it off and the paint normally just peels off with the water. If it's a little stubborn, I use a superfine scrub pad to take the rest off.

Okay, so I did not go with the two-wheeler yet... but I am planning on going with a wheel number you definitely would not have contemplated! Will do a OTB build of the Tyrrell P34 - the six-wheeler F1 car. Tamiya, 20th scale.

I am also 3/4 through finishing my Jordan (43rd scale Tameo) from the 2014 auto GB. End of year was a bit more hectic than anticipated.

Thanks rommelkiste, Eric and Lee! I've got my work cut out for me with my 69 Camaro paint job. lol We'll see what happens as I'm a couple of builds away from doing ANYTHING with those three kits for a while.

Wayne:It's all good man.  Jump on in with it when the build kicks off. I'll get it on the roster today.

Seabe: Ok I've got you down for a  Tameo 1/43 Lotus 91 Canada GP and a 1/20 Tamiya Tyrell P34. If all is correct I'll get you down in the build roster.

Mustang - sorry, no... that one was finished in the '14 GB. The one I'm still busy with, is the Tameo Jordan 197 - Monaco GP.

Been soaking the chrome parts in bleach.....sheeesh, that is some tough stuff.  Tamiya chrome was gone in a matter of hours, but this Revell stuff is hard as nails.......been three days and it's only about 2/3 gone.

Ordered some AM for the engine on this guy from TedsModelingMarketplace, mostly an assortment of braided line, solid aluminum line, and rubber tubing in different sizes, along with the metal fittings. It's been ages since I built a car model and the volume and variety of AM stuff out there is mind blowing to say the least.

Finally getting over this flu bug. The 37 Ford has been soaking since last week so hopefully the paint is off so I can start on it tomorrow. If not I'll jump on the 51 Chevy. I actually found someone that had 53 Chevy fender skirts so I got'em to cut down on the 51. The kit supplied ones are to small and don't fit flush with the body.

Ruddratt, I look forward to seeing your build, and your right, there's all kinds of nifty stuff out there now hehehehehe.

Eric

If you soak them in Westley's Bleche-Wite for 24-hours, it'll take both the chrome and undercoat off.

Thanks Greg, I'll have to give that a shot.  This Revell chrome is really stubborn. Most stores here will be closed tomorrow so I'll try and hunt some down on Friday.

I have just recently stepped back in to the automotive model building last month and have learned a ton ever since. I'm really looking forward to learning more here in this GB!

Well I noticed that I didn't put my entry in the line up so I'll be working on a Monogram 1/24 scale 1970 Dodge Challenger that I built at 14 years old. It started out as a simple touch up and quickly evolved into a full blown re-vamp. I no longer have the original boxing but here's a couple of shots before I got started and where I ended up at with this thing.

This was a photo I took in 2013:

Here's the shot that I took in early November (I thought I'd be done by now...........NOT) when I was just going to touch up the hood and paint and install the rear spoiler:

Actually it didn't turn out half bad back in the day. I was really proud of the clear coat finish I pulled off. I did NOT paint the exterior and will not be painting it now. I'm going to pull this one off in another clear coat finish after stripping off all the existing clear coat and decaling.

Here's what I ended up at instead of a simple touch up:

As some of you have already seen, there's ALOT more coming............................................
