75th Anniversary of 1941 Group Build (World at War)
Posted by checkmateking02 on Tuesday, December 1, 2015 3:10 PM
One month from now, we’ll begin a new year, and that means a new anniversary.  The year 2016 will be the 75th anniversary of 1941.  So that we remember the events and sacrifices of  those involved in the Second World War that year, I propose a 1941 Group Build.
The object is to build a model of anything that existed in 1941, as it appeared in 1941.  What it is, is up to you:  aircraft; vehicle; ship; figure--whatever you choose from whatever nation, Allied, Axis or neutral; any scale.  There are certainly a wide choice of subjects from 1941:  the German invasion of the Soviet Union; the ongoing battle of the Atlantic; the Sino-Japanese war; Pearl Harbor; Rommel in Afrika; the London Blitz; the AVG (Flying Tigers); and on and on.
I also propose to let the GB run from 1 January, 2016 until 31 December, 2020--the 75th anniversary of the year the war ended.  If I live so long, and remain competent to build kits, I hope to offer a group-build for each successive year of the war during the 75th anniversary of the war.  By the end of 2020, then, we’d have had GB for each individual year of the war.
Keeping each GB open till the 75th anniversary of the end of the war in 2020, I hope will give enough time for participants to complete a kit commemorating each year of the war as the anniversary comes up, plus allowing for new people to join at any time, and not miss any of the anniversary years, if they want to participate and mark this milestone in world history.
Because of this new bright idea, I will be changing the ending date for the current 1939/40 75th anniversary “World at War” Group Build to 31 December, 2020.  If you haven’t finished a build, or if you want to start marking the anniversary of all the years of WWII now, you’ll be able to begin when the war began, and keep up with each passing anniversary year.
I hope many of you will join to keep in memory and  sight  the world-defining events that marked the six years of  the Second World War.  It’s something I don’t think anyone ought ever to forget--or repeat.
Here’s the ultimate version of the group badge, similar in configuration to the 1939/40 group build, for the sake of continuity.  For anyone who wants more uniformity of group badges, I adjusted the 1939/40 GB badge over at that thread, to reflect the revised design.
Thanks for your consideration!

And here's a photo of what I'll be contributing to the memory of 1941.  It will be the Bristol Blenheim included in Airfix's "Victoria Cross Icons" offering.

It was the aircraft of Hughie Idwal Edwards, when he won the VC in 1941 during a raid on Bremen.

Hi Checkmate.

I know I am still working on the '39/40 build, but sign me up for this one too please.  Keeping with the theme of building the moldy oldies in my collection, I'll try a hand at Tamiya's old Italian M13/40.

Thanks, Rob. Welcome to the GB, and I will add you to the roster. I like the moldy oldies, too. I hope the Blenheim won't be too old and crotchety.

Well, I can't exactly skip this one, seeing as you have been such a big supporter of the 70th Anniversary GBs. I just wanted to check though, it sounds as though you are running this as one long GB, will you be doing a new thread each year or keep the same thread running.

Not sure what I will build for 41 yet, most likely some armour.

This whole idea will work nicely. I plan on running 80th Anniversary GB's starting in 2019, so it will be a nice overlap.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Yeah, Bish.  My plan was to start an annual group build each year for each anniversary, then let them all run until the end of 2020.  That way, new modelers can join in at any point and still be able to complete a build for each year of the war.

Good idea to have 80th GB's when the time comes; I hope I'm still around to participate.

And--glad to have you aboard for 1941.  I'll add you to the roster, with a "TBD," and when you decide, update things.

Hey Check, I'll jump in with a Tamiya 1/48 Fairey Swordfish Mk1 in markings from 818 squadron from the Ark Royal which disabled the Bismarck.
It will be a crossover from the Fleet Air Arm GB, if that is acceptable.

Welcome to the GB, Steve, John, Jack and Andy.  Very glad and pleased to have you aboard.  You've picked some interesting and unusual subjects.  I know what a Swordfish looks like, since I've seen "Sink the Bismarck" (a biplane with rigging is going to be really "fun," I'm sure), but Vindicators are sort of uncommon, and I don't even know what a Chaika is.

And:  yes, crossovers are acceptable.  I don't want us to bog down with a lot of rules, so really there aren't any to speak of--outside of things coming out of the year 1941.

As for the "1942" GB, I suppose I could start a thread already--but then, I'd have to work up another badge right away! Surprise (And I haven't got the "1941" item tweaked the way I want it.)

Besides, time will pass quickly.

It always does when you're trying to meet a GB deadline!

Thanks for joining!

I managed to update the badge, with lettering I think will show up better. I'm also going to head over to the '39-'40 build and post an updated badge that takes into account the new direction of the GB's. Anyone still wanting to take part in the '39-'40 GB can choose either badge they prefer, but the second version will be more uniform with the '41 badge.

I look forward to seeing that Blenheim check. I have a Special Hobby kit with the same markings as it was based at Swanton Morely in Norfolk. Can't wait to see what you do it this one.

CMK02,

Okay, how can I resist this one?  Put me down for a Revellogram P-40!  Might as well try my hand at this dog of a kit.  Wink

Sergeant Frank Tree: You know, this year wasn't the big year of the war, '41. I think the really big year is going to be 1942.

Major General Joseph W. Stillwell: [sighs] It's gonna be a long war.

PS> The above image is no way intended as a group badge.  I was just inspired!  Big Smile

Bish: It's Airfix's old mold Blenheim, so I suppose it will have its share of quirks. Didn't they just put out a new one recently? I also have another one stashed somewhere, not Airfix--but I don't remember the maker.

GAF: Glad to have you in the group build. I've updated the roster. And, I think that is a great looking piece of artwork. Nice job! Very dramatic!

I will probably do something Soviet that flies in 1/48. If only Xuntong would ever release that SB-2 that was supposed to be out 6 months ago...

Sounds great, ajd. 1941 was a pretty significant year for the Soviets!

Sign me up. No idea what I want to do  yet, so make me TBD for now. I inagine it will be a wingy thing (1:48 Zero?) but I want to look into light tanks. I'll let you know after I do my research.

Yeah, I think it will be good, too. I've looked at (but haven't built yet) the Hurricane, Defiant and Bf109E--and they all look really good.

Ok, just been doing some checking and i have made my choice. I have planed a few none GB build next year (like thats going to happen) but if they happen to fit into a GB then so be it.

One of them is the Special Hobby 1/72nd Whirlwind FB. Mk 1. I am doing an aircraft of 137 Sqn based at Matlaske. While they recieved the type in August, they moved to Norfolk in Dec, so it just squeeze's in to 1941.
