Well for what it's worth, I sent my idea to Revell and within 10 minutes I received  a response from Ed Sexton, Revell Inc. saying it sounds interesting and will be discussed at the next meeting.

It would be pretty cool if they decide to release one in 1/144. I know it's going to be way better than Trumpeter's.

If I may, here are a couple of add ons....  The 3 major fairwater versions, those being the original design, the mid war cut down and the late war cutdowns.  Also both versions of the aft end of the fairwater, rounded and the more pointed versions.

Would be nice if they could also do the Balao scope shears, since the hulls were pretty much identical in length and shape.

This could be done with a couple of extra sprues.

Would give the builder plenty of choices to build most any boat of the era, and would be a pretty good seller IMO.  I know I would have at least a couple.

Brilliant suggestion GH and I took the liberty to forward your idea as an additional thought. All we can do is hope.

Oh boy I got a responce from Revell regaring the I-400 as well.....hopefully.....

Hi,
This is a good idea. I believe Tamiya has done an I-400 kit, but not sure what scale.
I’ll pass this along to Revell Germany who has made all the U-Boat kits.
Thanks for writing to us.

Regards,
Ed Sexton

That would be fantastic if an I-400 came out too.

My Gato deck guns finally arrived from Shapeways and was I amazed at the incredible high level of detail these 3D Printed deck weapons have! The 3" gun detail is incredible as are the 20mm ones. I have to carefully cut off the shileds on two of the 20's since the Gato didn't have them. Double click on the pictures for a super closeup.

Everything is there, seats, sights, traversing and elevation mechanism, even the muzzle is hollowed out.

The 20s are simpler but still have lots of details!

I just may get another Trumpeter Gato , and order from Shapeways a 4 or 5" gun and a 40mm to make a late war version.

Yeah, I'm really impressed with 3D stuff. The 1/350 3D ship crews are outstanding.

Would you happen to know if they do the 20's and a 4"/50 in 1/72?  Also if you can PM the contact info for the 1/144 20's, need to get a set for mine.  They look alot better than the Noutilus versions and a lot less work.

MC & PJ-

Thanks, went and had a look.  Seems like I'll be putting in an order for their 4"/50, 20's in 1/72 and their 20's in 1/144.  Seems Wahoo had the pedestal bases insted of the tripod style, at least from the pics I've seen of her in July '43.  Haven't seen any showing what she had in Jan./Feb. after her 3rd patrol.

Ordered out 3-20's and the 4"/50 for both the 1/144 and 1/72 Gato's.  Cost me a few bucks but should be worth it in the long run.  They should really set off the big one.

Many thanks to PJ for digging out the info and working to get the maker to do a 1/144 4"/50.

You are welcome GH. Those weapons will add tons of excellent details. I too will be ordering some more things for a late war refit to come soon.

The Mark 5 pedestals predated the Mk 10 tripods, and yep the MI photos from 7/43 show pedestals.

Thanks GM.  Appreciate the confirmation.

As an aside, I did see a Balao fairwater and shears on Shapeways for those doing one of that class.  Not real cheap, but pretty much the only game going from what I know.

PJ, will take care in working with them, thanks for the warning.

Here you go for service....got notified there was a problem with the 1/72 4"/50 and that part of the order was cancelled.  The builder fixed it within a couple of hours and is ready to go again with it.  Re-ordered it already.  That is being on the ball for customer service in my book.

I've emailed a couple of designers at Shapeways and every time they reply to my inquiry right away. All in all I'm pretty happy with the suppliers at Shapeways.

I hope so, went through another cycle of cancel and reorder, and have had to rest password twice and the site still won't recognize either email or username and pass word.

Here's hoping it gets sent this time.  And he said he went to a different pedestal base this time to boot.  Hoping it still works for subs, awaiting answer on that one.

Looks like everything will ship by the 4th.  Now to get the pesky login fixed.

**EDIT**  well just got an email from them on the 4"/50 in 1/72.  More issues and not able to ship, and never have heard back on the login issue.  Sent a very unhappy email back saying I'm done with them since they can't fill the order after 3 tries, and can't get the site to recognize my login with out having to ask for a reset every time I want to login. They are more trouble than they are worth.  Screw it, will just build the 1/72 with the kit 4" when I get to it.

Wow GH sorry man. What the heck is the issue with making the deck gun? They have it in other scales so I don't get it.

The details on my /144 scale 3"/50 is just outstanding so I'm a happy camper.

I've read a couple of reviews that say that the 1/72 guns in your model are little jewels.

They haven't detailed the problem and neither has the designer, just saying it can't be printed, for the third time, he supposedly fixed the other two issues it had.  They have worn out the bank's computer with all the charges and refunds.....my statement is going to be like 9 pages this month.

Well, for what it's worth at least they tried unlike Nautilus. I haven't heard anything back from that guy.

OTOH I did not know that. She's got a good Wiki page and her mother has an even better one. Anyone with a brother named Zoltan is cool with me.

I have some progress with my Gato build. Went to HL and got a nice pre routed base and wooden finials that got stained and polished up. I mounted the Gato on the finials and will be able to remove it for painting. Double click on the pictures for closeups!

got the fairwater mounted and secured to the deck. I assembled the kit's stand to hold the boat while being worked on.

I placed the 3" and 20 mm guns on their locations just to see how they look. I'm very pleased with the level of details. I wanted one 20mm elevated so one was cut off from the mount and super glued it back slightly elevated.

Closeup of the 3"/50 gun.
