I started a 1/144 Trumpeter Kawanishi H6K5-L Mavis that I'm going to put on a water base. I'm doing it for the Floats and Boats GB and wanted to know if I can throw it on here as well.

I started it last night with cutting the flaps out.

Sorry if this is redundant from the Midway GB, but I wanted to post a pre-shade technique I am trying for the first time on a ship.  I have seen a number of IJN models with realy nice opaque finishes and found that the model is given a base coat of matte black.  So here it goes......

Heres more about the Zuiun; final matt , some black detail painted and glued the floats.

Yeah we can do some stuff online or mail it in but not in this case. I live in the state of Virginia but not far from the North Carolina border. I bought my current car in NC and registered it here in Virginia but some how it ended up being registered as property in NC. How this happened I don't have a clue nor the fine folks in the DMV. The manager is supposed to call me later this week.... 

Hi Cliff, welcome back after your busy day.

Here in Canada, the DMV has some things that can be done online, which helps to avoid lineups.   Things like renewing photo ID still have to come in, as well as new vehicle registration or selling one, also if you want to check out the cute girl behind the counter - has to be done in person.

The Akagi is now under full construction in my shipyard.  She is quite a ship as to how it was designed.

I'm not going to comment much on the whole primer thing since I'm not sure about the issue. The article Steve linked is great, very useful. A guy did post these two photos on the FaceBook group I belong to that might be of some use.

I noticed that the Raiden being an army fighter has paint all beat to hell while the Zero's paint looks almost pristine here. As you pointed out I think the IJN gave it's planes a lot more TLC than the IJA.

I have a very strong feeling that the IJN planes showed that red primer on chipped areas and peeling was probably non exhistant due to proper paint adhesion to the primer. IJAAF was a different case as I have been reading.

Got the office painted, detailed with a few wires here and there, pe seat belts and some weathering to show use. Too bad most of the details will be next to impossible to see once the fuselage is assembled and the clear parts are added.

Wings and fuselage going together and clamped with my DeWalt mini clamps. These clamps are worth every dollar.

PJ those are some interesting points for sure! I was corrosion control at my first duty station of Guam whilst in the air force and must say your hunches would be right. We had to paint many a leading edge on B-52s where the paint had worn away exposing the yellow primer underneath, which would eventually get to the bare metal.

I don't get it. Fujimi did a great job with the delicate panel line details but the pit was like nothing was there, bare as a baby's behind! Then comes the IP which has fantastic molded details right down to each instrument face having numbers and graphs. Dry brushing brought out all that rich detail. A tiny drop of Testor's Clear Parts Cement was used for each the instrument glass. Double click on the image for an extre closeup.

PJ, good question about chipping on a Val.  I can only suppose, but being a bird opperating over salt water, I imagine crews would be diligent in patching up damaged paint finishes?
