I'd like to come in with the 21st Century 1/32 Bf109G-14.

I'll do a very minor cosmetic 'conversion' to depict the tall-tailed and Erla-haubed G-6 that was the last wartime mount of Finnish 35-victory ace (and Mannerheim Cross recipient) Nils 'Nipa' Katajainen.

I'm interested.  No problem finding a subject,  finding bench space/time is another matter ...

Do have a question, what about an aircraft subject that was flown before reaching the customary ace status of five victories?

regards,

Jack

After looking over the stash and what marking options I had I've picked Eduards BF 110 E as flown by 14 kill ace Lt. Felix-Maria Brandis he was killed in 1942 when he crashed on the return leg of a combat sortie during bad weather.

Over the last two days, I got a fair bit done on my Airfix 109 submission- I went from virtually untouched kit to fully assembled airframe, ready for primer and painting. The build starts with the cockpit, and it fits with typical airfix new-tool ease. There's a fair bit of detail as well, and I haven't installed the IP yet.

I assembled the cockpit as one sub assembly, and began painting. I pre-shaded the interior frames with NATO Black, and sprayed the cockpit with Vallejo RLM 02. Once that dried, I used oils to build up a bit of grime in the framework, and picked out details. Here is the only picture I apparently took of some cockpit detail pre-installation.

As I prepared to join the fuselage halves, tradgedy struck! Due to my own benchtop negligence, I unwittingly dropped the left side- (in my shelf, the DISPLAY side) into a pool of polycement. This was the damage.

A gob of putty and some sanding later, however, and the disaster was averted. With the hole filled, I assembled the rest of the airframe.

I then came to my first bit of indecision- whether or not to detail and display the engine. On the one hand, the engine provided is pretty nice. On the other hand, however, it is pretty simple. In the end, I decided to go ahead and do it. I just wanted to add a couple of distinguishing details of the E-4's engine. Looking at pictures, I tried to find prominent features I could add at the scale. On the right side, a very noticable (presumably coolant0 line was visible. So, using stretched sprue, I added this to kit engine and painted it blue. I also added a little joining cap to the point where the pipe enter the engine block proper. On the same side, I cut a little bit of stretched sprue, and added the electric starter onto the gearbox.

On the left, I simply painted the engine block. This section was painted black first, with the grey mount handbrushed with RLM Grey and 'grimed up' with burnt umber artists oils.

The engine done, I sanded down my seams and sprayed primer. Tomorrow, I should be able to get a fair bit of painting done.

Waggish: We've all had a glue mishap like that before I'm sure you can sand it right out. You are doing a good job of staying on top of things hosting. I've got a armor build going on right now hope to be done with it by the end of the month then I should be starting on this build.

WA, despite the glue accident, and i concur with Clint, we have all had that happen, that Emil looks great. I built the Airfix one a few months back and it was joy to build, looking forward to seeing it with the paint on.

Spent all day and some of last night painting some other projects and this- there was a single hiccup in my painting on this model, which is a lot fewer than usual. Anyway, I've got her to gloss, which is now drying.

I preshaded with NATO Black

And the painting commenced. I used Vallejo Model Air RLM 1939-1941 colors. A lot of people don't seem to like these paints- I think the colors are pretty good. You've just got to thin them a little bit (they are in no way airbrush ready) and spray at a bit higher pressure.

I did have a problem with my mottling- on the left side, it turned out exactly how I wanted.

However, I had to reload my cup before the right side. I'm pretty sure I didn't thin it enough, and I had a huge problem with the paint refusing to spray.

Instead of being lazy, I let it sit for a few hours, masked off the camo on the wing and fuselage top, resprayed the blue, and gave it another go. It's still not as good as the left side, but it at least looks less strange.

That taken care of, I used tamiya tape and silly putty to mask the front portion of the fuselafe to take the RLM yellow. I sprayed it on, let the model sit for several hours, and sprayed a coat of Tamiya X-22. Immediatly after spraying the X-22, I tried a trick I read somewhere online- I loaded the airbrush with Tamiya thinner, dropped by pressuer by a lot, and misted it over the finish. It definently helped smooth it out- Next time, though, I'm going to get a bottle of Tamiya laqcer thinner and see if that does the job any better.

Decals will probably be done Tuesday afternoon- I want to do them tomorrow, but I've got SAT's to take and I should probably be studying for those instead.

WA: Looking really good I'm one of the ones who don't like the model air paints I always go back to tamiya. My build for this gb I'm going to try lifecolor paints I've read they spray just like tamiya but are color matched to rml colors so no mixing. Hey you can't even tell where the glue mishap was knew you could do it. I agree its great to see teens getting into the hobby at 30 I'm usually one of the youngest at shows.

Waggish, the 109 build is right on.

Are those Vallejo colours from their 'AIR  WAR' sets?  That is their second boxing for aircraft colours, as they had changed most of the formulas from what they had released on their first go-around.  From here, your sample looks good.

Waggish,

If you don't already know, Vallejo has a Flow Improver Here which makes a world of difference with both their regular paint and Air paint. Thin the paint as you normally would, then add a couple drops of the flow improver. Hope this helps.

And the mottling on your 109 looks great, especially for 1/72.

This is a veeeery nice idea for a GB. Please count me in, I will (try to) build Hasegawa's Bf-109G-10 in 1:48, as flown by Lt. Heinz 'Esau' Ewald of JG.52 (credited with 84 kills).

Waggish,

I'd like to enter with a 1/48 Hasegawa Bf109G-2 flown by Alfred Grislawski of JG.52 (credited with 133 victories). I did start this kit already, but only added some PE to the cockpit, no paint has been applied. I'll post pictures soon.

Figured it's time to jump in with the obligatory prelims for my end of the GB. I give you the 21st Century Toys 1/32 Bf109G-14:

I usually don't keep boxes from my kits, but the box-art can be seen upper left. For those unfamiliar with this company's products, they were originally designed to be sold as pre-assembled and pre-decorated collector toys...which they then decided to sell as kits. Hence the quick and fool-proof method of screw assembly (with great big screw holes on wings and fuselage, and vinyl-like 'plugs' to cover those holes). The kits came as seen above, with no sprues to speak of, but parts neatly gathered in sealed plastic bags. A better view of the exciting box-art, and really fine decals:

A quick glance showed the kit's wings are the same as used in the earlier Bf109F release; but there is good news....

The kit is fairly 'simplified' as are all the entries in the series, but make a good basic starting-point. I've got an Eduard instrument panel and some other 'goodies' available, which I may or may not use. We'll all see how things develop.

More fighting Finns are always welcome!

Hope that aged decal sheet is still viable. (I have some that age that are...but it depends a lot on how they're stored.)

Crown, I added your 2nd to the roster- as a side note, do you know if that decal sheet is available to purchase somewhere online? I've always been a fan of the Finn's, and something like that might finally get my Buffalo built.

I think S.B.S. Models is the most recent to release decals  for the Finnish Buffulo, available both in 1/72 and 1/48.   Should be easist to find from a European vendor:

On a different note, another question for a qualifying entry,  instead of an aircraft, would a scale figure bust of a famous ace work?  I have this in the stash:

Also WA, I was thinking of picking this up tomorrow, if someone dosn't buy it before I do.

It was flown by Tetsuzo Iwamoto who was credited with at least 87 victories based on the RAF and FAA scoring systems, but his diary claims 202 alied aircraft. Either way he was one of the top scoring aces in the IJNAS.

I'll let you know if I get it.

Colours look very good, and great stuff with the mottling at this scale.

Thanks  Bish.
The bust is a total of six parts if one includes the brass rod to mount - note no base.  Also have the option to go hatless.

Waggish, I'd like to enter with "OTTO". I'll do the Marseille figure, it'll never come anywhere close to what Jack can do but it's 54mm big enough to see what I'm doing.

I guess I might join. I've got an Academy Bf-109 G-6 in 1/72 I'm going to decal as Franz Stigler's plane, from when he escorted the badly-damaged B-17 "Ye Olde Pub" to the North Sea, saluted, and flew away instead of shooting them down. Just need to get the right paints for it.

I also have revell's 1/32 Fw 190A-8 I hope to make as Otto Bach's plane (https://roncole.net/collections/authentic-aircraft-relic-displays/products/luftwaffe-fw190-ace-otto-bach-relic-display-ron-cole-aviation-art-wwii), which I have a piece of, but I'm still trying to find enough decal sets to make the scheme before I get back to it. But that'll have to wait for another time.

I got out the two Kubel kits I have. The first one is a straight DAK car, the second is the same kit with Marseille and the OTTO decals. For those wondering, OTTO is "eight" in Italian. He was given the car by the Regia, why they added the OTTO is in some dispute.

I had started the DAK car, and then found OTTO and bought that kit too.

Here's the DAK car, a real glue bomb. I'm going to rescue it and keep the second kit in the box.

First things first, take it apart.

I only have myself to blame. At the time I was trying runny CA and it got all over.

I've since gone back to solvent cement, and gotten better at this gig.

At least the CA is pretty easy to scrape off. I was able to snap this thing apart in about an hour.

Yes, cleanup will take a couple of beers tonight.

Tomcat, you can hit any 'reply' button in the thread, but your post will still end up in chronological order, i.e. as being the last post until the next person comes along to reply.

The only advantage of picking a specific response to reply to, is you are given the option to directly quote them in your post (like I just have done). Cool

I'll be working on my 21stCentury Bf109 slowly at first, since I'm about 3/4 of the way through another labor-intensive parallel project. But I've cut my first plastic, and started to work out details of the build. It's not going to be 'super-detailed,' but I'll replace or improve enough to dress it up a little.

I'll probably be content to leave ailerons and flaps in a 'neutral' position...but to me a 109 doesn't look right without the radiator flaps split. I used my micro-saw and a scriber to dismount said flaps:

The molded-in interior detail is way-simplified for 1/32 scale...but really not too bad, with deep relief, and judging from other online builds I've seen, paints up quite nicely. The 'bucket' and IP are also a good start:

I do, however, have a nice pre-colored intstrument panel from Eduard that I intend to use; so the prominent 'pockets' to hold the kit part need to be removed:

I've started work on the IP, but no photos yet.

Glad to see new 'faces' jumping on the wagon. I look forward to seeing all the projects develop!

Gregbale, how do you typically cut something like that out? Can you do it with a knife, or do you grind it away with a dremel or similar?

Sorry for the delay, WA, haven't checked back for a while.

For the 'pockets,' I started with sprue cutters, nipping away whatever I could reach, then finished with Mission Models' wonderful micro-chisel...an absolutely indispensible tool I couldn't do without. It cuts, planes and smooths, all in the tiniest spaces. (Not a paid shill...just a happy user!)

Don't have a Dremel at the moment, but that would work equally well. Knives would be a bit dodgy...since in my sad experience, they tend to want to skid off in unexpected directions...usually homing like a missile for whatever soft vulnerable part (read 'fingers') is closest. Been there, done that...and it's less fun than it sounds....Big Smile

Now that my WW1 Halberstadt is done, I can devote a bit more time to my Mersu, as the Finns called the sturdy Bf109.

The Eduard etch set I'm using was actually designed for the Hasegawa kit, so I wasn't sure how much 'persuasion' might be required to adapt the fit to the 21st Century kit, beyond chopping out the 'pockets.' The set has the usual gorgeous instrument panel, and lots of fittings for other cockpit bits that should prove useful.

After careful lining-up and gluing of components...and the application of individual bezels for the gaiuges...the IP needed only a few 3D details of buttons and levers and such to finish it off. I lost my kit's so-so single-piece gunsight to the carpet monster, so I scratched another from bits of styrene, and added the nice Eduard fittings to dress it up.

Here we go:

The IP fit perfectly, and my gunsight cleared everything and lined up on the first try! Let's hope that's an omen of things to come....

Dremel has pretty limited use with plastic. The speeds are too high. I've got a couple, and use them for gross demolition of stuff. If you can, work no closer than 1/8" to the finished surface and then go the rest of the way with hand tools.

A lot of work can be accomplished with a sprue cutter of a set of Xuron clippers.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks.

I'll generally just ignore the flat switch and lever bits in the etch set...unless they're a complex shape of some sort...and just replace them with ones made from sprue and/or bits of styrene rod or strip. But yes, like you, I use white glue for knobs and handles.

@Greg,

Wow! Your cockpit looks, well, upea!

Kiitos paljon!

I appreciate the props, guys.

Hashing on with more cockpit fun. I'm using one of Radu Brinzan's neat harness sets for the first time:

I decided to add a tea colored wash to the paper-fiber 'belty' bits, just to put a little age and wear on. (The original yellow-tan color is on the right):

And after an hour or so of threading tiny bits through tinier openings (with my Optivisor knock-off and two pairs of locking needle-nose tweezers), they're ready for the seat-pan. The nearly-finished  'tub,' with Quickboost resin control stick added, and rudder pedals, cannon-cover strap and floor-mounted control box detail from the Eduard etch set:

I've got one of the HGW sets I'm saving for the Revell 109G, but figured I'd thin my backlog of older 'accessories' first. They look about the same level of cross-eyed and fumble-fingered difficulty! Geeked

Greg, that 'pit is looking INCREDIBLE! Those Eduard sets are fantastic! How does the printed color compare to your paint for the pit? I've always wanted to give these pre-painted photoetch bits a shot, but I'm peterified that the match will be painfully obviously different.

Thanks!

The deal with Eduard and their pre-colored sets seems to be a roll of the dice. As you might see in my previously-posted photos above, the colors in this set look dead-on to me...and I've been looking at a lot of 109 cockpit photos recently. On the other hand...I've got some older pre-colored sets of theirs...probably from when the process was fairly new...where the colors are just weird: 'baby blue' Luftwaffe cockpits and slightly orange-tinted RAF ones. It seems like they might have gotten those color issues dialed in a little more accurately, now.

As to matching, I tend to mix my own colors much of the time, so it's not a big issue. (Besides...if you look closely at photos of original aircraft...you'll often see a slight 'mis-match' in colors in the real thing! Manufacturing processes being what they are, components from different sources and production runs were frequently installed in the same aircraft; they obviously weren't as careful about 'accuracy' as we modelers are....Big Smile)

My Mersu cockpit is pretty much done.

I figured the molded detail on the kit's cockpit sides would paint up decently, so I left most of it intact...just adding styrene bits for handles and deep-relief features, some thin-diameter solder for various lines, and the assorted add-ons the Eduard etch set provided. Here's a 'before and after' of the port side:

Same deal for the starboard side...though I did scratchbuilt the distinctive oxygen regulator from a sprue disc and some small-size rod and tube (with an Eduard faceplate):

Not completely 'buttoned up' yet, but here's the finished cockpit 'effect' (minus the not-yet-added shoulder harnesses):

On to fuselage work.

Well, I finally started on the G-2. Here is the kit I'm building:

The Eduard PE purchased for this build:

And the decals for Grislawski's G-2:

What's been completed so far:

I have to say, I'm really enjoying working with PE. I have a bit more to finish on the cockpit before I start shooting the paint. And then several of the painted PE panels will be added.

Thanks for looking and I hope to have another update soon.

@Tomcat,

I took a look at the video, nice start on the 109! And I will second Waggish, the dry brushing really does make the IP pop!

@Clint,

Yes this PE kit replaces a lot of the detail. But, it's the first time I've used a pre-painted set. A part of me thinks I'm cheating. Then, I almost got carried away and started adding the painted piece before painting the base RLM. The external set does really add some nice details, so I'll try to get some of that done soon and show you guys.

@Bish,

Thank you, sir!

I used to have that 'cheating' sensation as well...then realized that there are far more projects than time to do them, and the tradeoff---making the project look that much better---is worth the 'cheat.' (Plus, I spent decades scratchbuilding cockpits and instrument panels, literally gauge by gauge: I have the satisfaction of knowing I can do it...but it doesn't really bother me any more not to have to! Probably my last update for the next month or so, since 'work' is getting ready to seriously impose on the modeling time for a bit. Can't be helped.

Basic fuselage work is done, with the fuselage itself assembled and seams cleaned up/rescribed. Since the fuselage is a carry-over from the company's earlier -F model, some molded fuselage details like fuel-fill and access hatches had to be done away with, some re-positioned, and some new ones scribed in. I added the prominent circular compass hatch on the lower port side, for example.

The kit's optional 'tall' tail was a pretty good match shape-wise for the one indistict photo I have of the real a/c I'm portraying, so no drastic reshaping was required. But it appears my bird had the smooth wooden-construction rudder, so the prominent ribs molded on the kit piece had to go. Likewise the upper and lower trim tabs; many versions of the tall tail had these, but as best I can tell mine had only the Flettner tab ...for which an actuator arm will be added, in due course. Horizontal stabs had the same heavy ribbing---and a company logo---that likewise had to go.

The kit came with large holes in the aft cockpit bulkhead, to allow the kit canopy's fairly sturdy 'peg' style hinges to pivot; I filled these and sanded off the kit's barey-visible baggage hatch outine, and replaced the hatch with styrene with photo-etch brackets. (A bit more to be added there, after painting.)

I still haven't quite decided whether to use the kit's canopy---which, while thick, is clear and nicely-molded---or whether to go for the Radu Brinzan photo-etch version I have in the stash. We'll see.

Once the fuselage is wrapped up, I'll tackle issue of the bit of dihedral that needs to be added to the wing assembly...and start detailing-up oil coolers and landing gear wells.

Thanks to all for following along.

Great attention to detail Greg. That's going to look great. It's odd the the manufacturer would plaster their name on an outside surface rather than on the inside. They might as well have molded it onto the upper wing surface.

I need to get going on other builds while I'm finishing the Scharnhorst so I started on the 190 A8. The seams aren't too bad and will be easy to smooth out.

Hello everyone,

I will be starting off with my humble contribution to this great GB today with the AZ Models 1/72 Messerschmitt BF 109-F4 to be depicted in the markings of Gunther Rall. Major Rall finished the war with an incredible total of 275 victories, making him the thrird highest scoring ace of all time.

Here is the kit box, and is one of the many 109 versions that AZ make, and I have a few now in my stash. The box markings are Rall's and this is the one ill be using.

I am in no way an expert in 109's but have always admired the tenacity and evolution of this mean looking fighter, so I will be using the excellent book from A&M by Richard Franks to help me out.

I will post some pics as I move along today.

Thanks for looking.

Best Regards

Hello all,

I have this weekend made a start on the AZ Models 1/72 Bf109-F (Freidrich). Despite the previous problems and antics I am having with the AZ Models Mohawk, this is a total different matter. The plastic is crisply moulded and fitment so far, exemplary. As you can see you get a lot for your pounds/dollars .

There is so much extra items on these sprues, that I will have spares for ages!

The end of progress this weekend, I have primed and painted the cockpit, added some detail to the sidewalls, added the Yahu IP, affixed the seat and trim wheels and done some drybrushing of flat aluminium (Humbrol).

Next steps will be a base flat matt coat to the sidewalls etc and then a Flory wash, possibly Black or grime. I have a busy week this week, work wise, so may not be till the weekend.

I will also sand off the represented struts on the rear of the fuselage under the stabiliser, as I dont think these were on the F-4 variant. I have masked these areas off in preperation.

 Thanks for looking.

Best Regards

Mark

Hello everyone,

Just a quick update. Managed to get in a couple of hours in tonight, and finally assembled, after painting, the detailed little cockpit tub on the AZ Friedrich. I have also added the decal seat belt/harness, rudder pedals and joystick etc.

I then dry fitted it to check the alignment prior to putting the fuselage halves together tomorrow. The fit seems good.

If I have some spare time tomorrow evening, Ill join the fuselage halves together and add the exhausts. Ill also try, carefully, to add the armoured front glass to the clear canopy.

Thanks for looking.

Steve is that 190 in 1/72?

Mark I agree that 1/72 109 is packed with detail way too small for my eyes.

Count me in on this one.

I don't know what I'm going to build yet, but it's going to be one of these:

Hasegawa Bf 109 F-4 (1:32)

Hasegawa Bf 109 G-6 (1:32)

Hasegawa Fw 190 D-9 (1:32)

No matter which one I'll end up building, it's definitely going to be in the markings of one of the aircraft flown by Gerhard Barkhorn.

Gregbale- My mind is having a tough time wrapping around this- a "photoetch" canopy? How does that work? Is it a photoetch frame, and you supply the plastic? Or is like a photoeth frame to a vacuumform clear bit?

Modelcrazy- Nice start! Looks a lot cleaner than the Airfix 190.

aeroplanegripper- Looks really good so far! I had alway's thought of AZM as a kinda low-quality short-run company, but your's looks great! Maybe I should give them another go.

crown- That looks amazing! Miles above the Old 1/48 A6M2 Tamiya does that I built. I had to look once or twice to be sure it wasn't the 1/32 version!

Count me in on this one.

I don't know what I'm going to build yet, but it's going to be one of these:

SchattenSpartan, I've added you to the roster. I marked you down as

-ShattenSpartan- Hasegawa 1/32 [TBD] (Gerhard Barkhorn)

Once you've settled on the aircraft, let me know and I'll change it. Side note- that how long is the fuselage on that D-9? My 1/48 one is large- I can only imagine how much space that beauty would take up.

Thanks, that works for me.

It should be just shy of 32cm from the tip of the spinner to the trailing edge of the rudder. Definitely not a small model...

It's a p-e frame with clear sheet and templates to cut out the parts. The pics on the web look perfect...but I'm not sure I can get it to look quite so good. I may just see how the kit part paints up, and go from there.

Nice work,everybody!

Mark, will be wathcing this one. I got the same kit a couple of months back, intending to do the scheme with the white wash down one side. I have been eyeing up some of those AZ kits for a while but this was my first time buying one, so really keen to see how they build. Be interested to see what you make of that book as well.

I used one of those on my 32nd 109F and have another for my G. I found it a bit tricky to use but looks very nice when done. Some great detail in it. Not sure i would buy any more though.

I built that hase kit at the end of last year, the boxing with the Rudel markings. It is a good size but not to big. Certainly not as big as the Stuka it sits next to.

I've got a few AZmodels in the stash Bish, they look better than your average short run to me, and usually have really nice decals. Great subjects too. I must be build one soon, so I can really decide. They look a world better than Amodel though, and certainly better than the older generation short runs likes Aeroclub and Pegasus/

Gentleman, I have a quick question about Gustav 109's. Did the G's have RLM66 or RLM02 cockpit interior color?

I just found this:

After November 1941, all cockpit/crew areas were RLM Black-Grey 66.
The interior of engine compartments were painted in RLM 02, with the exception of the firewall.
Aircraft fuselage areas, with the exception of the cockpit were finished in RLM 02.
Aluminum and other alloy areas were still given a coat of RLM 02 to prevent corrosion.
Equipment such as radios, fuel tanks, oxygen bottles, etc. were in the color applied by the manufacturer.
Radios were usually black or gray; fuel tanks were usually black or gray. Oxygen bottles were usually overall blue, or painted with blue stripping.
Wing areas were finished in RLM 02.
Gun bay areas generally retained their RLM 02 paint.
The flap 'well' and interior of the flap was painted with RLM 02. This includes radiator flap and cowl flap areas.
Bf-109B/C/D/E's usually had the underwing radiator area painted the same color as the fuselage underside.
Wheel wells and components should have been RLM 02.
Steel prop blades were painted RLM 70 black green.

Is this accurate?

Crikey Bruce, thats a pretty conclusive and detailed answer!

I think, and Im only a real novice with WW2 Luftwaffe paint schemes myself, that about covers it.

I did make a mistake on my Friedrich Im working on now, as I did the interior RLM02, but hay ho. I have learnt now. I wouldnt mind i bought a book on the 109 F to K's to get these sort of things correct!

Hey guys! I'm adding another of my own to the mix. I'll be building Tamiya's 1/32 A6M2b. I'm not one hundred percent certain who will be flying her- I might be doing an aftermarket scheme. For now, I'll mark what I'll build for now as Lt. Fusada Iita. I haven't found any info on his 'ace' status, so I'll include him under 'noteworthy' instead- he was a high-ranking leader during the attack on Pearl Harbor, and is widely credited as being the first Japanese kamikaze to attack United States personell.

I won't be able to get started until I clear two or three more projects off of the shelf, but I just wanted to get it out their that I got the kit and will be building another entry.

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for all the knid comments on the build of the AZ Models "Friedrich". I have been really pleased by the ease of build on this, and with the overall fit of the model and the detail of the components. In fact so much so, I have managed to get a few hours in over the past few days. This was the state of play on Thursday evening.

I have since added the Revi Gunsight, which I have painted Humbrol Gunmetal, and the armoured backrest and added and masked the canopy. I then added the Chin air scoop and the supercharger intake which sadly covers the supercharger fan, which was really detailed. Very little filler was required.

I then today, post a quick break to watch a bit of Prince Harry and Meghans wedding (congrats!) to prime with Alclad Grey Micro Filler and Primer.

Tomorrow I will rescribe where required and add Matt White pre the Yellow (Gelb) ID markings on the lower cowling, wing tips and fuselage band.

Thanks for looking in.

Best Regards

Hey guys, great stuff coming along with those builds ...

-----------------------------

About the Japanese pilot that performed the kamikaze attack at Pearl Harbour, try this spelling of his name and should find more info: Fusata Iida

----------------------------

AZ Models - Just a heads up if you plan or already have a Gustav (109G) in the stash, the cockpit tub does not fit bettween the fuselage halves.  The company posted the required fixes here, along with a photo:

Greetings all,

I have managed this week to get in an hour each night, to commence the painting of the Gunther Ralls "Friedrich". The paints I used were a combination of Alclad, Humbrol, Xtracolor and Colourcoats.I think I must have used up a few yards of masking tape and Parafilm, over the past few days, but I have enjoyed it.

First up was the addition of the underside colour of RLM 76, and the painting of the Yellow (Gelb) panels under cowling, the wing tips, and fuselage band. RLM 02 Grey was also added to the wheel bays and radiator flaps.

As this aircraft, i believe, was field painted in theatre in Russia, it had a rather unusual paint scheme. The wings were of a standard splinter cammo pattern of RLM 74/75 and the fuselage an all over colour of RLM 70 (Schwartzgrun). This is what it looks like at the moment.

The exhausts are still to be tidied up, and next step will be an addition of the first coat of gloss varnish, perhaps over the weekend.

Thanks for looking in.

Best Regards

Mark

@Nick,

That office looks fantastic! And I have to ask, the open panels on the wings, does that allow for for internal guns? If so, that is a nice perk for this kit.

@Mark,

The Yellow turned out very well, as well as the splinter camo. Did this aircraft have mottling on the fuselage?

Quick update on my G-2, I base coated the cockpit with flat black, then opened my jar of RLM 66 to find it dried. So, I just received a new bottle and will paint the cockpit. Pictures to come soon...

thank you Tony and Chad. Im also working on another zero this is a nice kit.

Clint I think a coat of light clear green before the wash will do.

Mark I like the camo on the 109 nice yellow trim too.

Bruce I havent looked in to that but this kit comes with different wing panels for the 20mm cannon on the A6M5a

Bruce, thank you mate, it was fun doing the masking for it. No, apparently the mottling on the fuselage was sprayed over in theatre. I have a couple of pics of this actual kite when it crashed in 1941, and though its a B&W photo, you cant really make out any remnants of the mottling.

Good scheme Mark, I haven't seen that one.

Thank you Tony, one of the reasons I chose it, as it is a bit different isnt it?

Today, I put the decals on, post two coats of Alclad Aqua Gloss. The decals were the AZ Models kit supplied ones, and I did not go for many of the stencils, as truth be told they wouldnt be seen against the dark background.

The decals were quite thin and a couple broke in places, but I managed to align them back. A shame was that the two JG5 2 unit badges were slighly out of register. No setting solution was required and all decals settled really well.

I also added the two after market nose machine guns. Tomorrow will be the addition of the Flory Models Black wash, and a flat matt coat.

Hello everyone,

This is just a quick update on the status of the build of the Friedrich. As of today, the final addition of the Xtracrylix Flat cote has been done, post the Flory Models wash, and bulk of the canopy masks removed.

I have also added the undercarriage legs and the Master brass pitot tube and MG's, plus the minute armoured glass. I will affix the wheels and undercarriage doors later at the end.

I also added the radiator flaps and the tail wheel. Next up will be the aerial and attenae rigging.

 Thanks for looking in.

Alright time for me to get started on this. After a much needed cleaning and reorganization of my bench I started to get some of the pit put togeather. One thing I would of bet good money on, is thinking this kit had the option to display the engines but it doesn't. But the main reason I bought it was it came with a little resin dachshund also why I'm going with this ace for the build too it was the staffel mascot. Also looked everywhere but seem to be missing a part it isn't on the tree and nowhere in the box but it should be easy to make.

Got the pit base painted started with Tamiya XF-1 Flat Black then XF-22 RLM Grey or RLM02. From there I've been adding some of the color PE to her and will start detail painting and adding wear and weathering tomorrow sometime.

Hello everyone,Here is my finished entry for this month, this is the excellent kit of the AZ Models 1/72 Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4E . It is finished in the markings and scheme of the great Luftwaffe ace Gunther Rall of JG 8/52. It depicts his aircraft as flown on 28 November 1941 when he was in Russia. That day he was shot down and injured when he crash landed, breaking his back. He would go back to flying in August 1942 and finish the war with 275 victories, making him the 3rd highest scoring ace of all time.

Like nearly all of my kits this has taken approximately a month to do. It was a trouble free kit to build, with loads of spare pieces for the spares box, and has given me a new appreciation for the AZ line. Paints were a combination of Xtracolor, Alclad, Colourcoates and Humbrol enamel, built basically OOB except for a Yahu IP and Master brass gun barrels and pitot tube.

The wash is Flory Models Black over the airframe, and grey on the wheels.

Thanks to the WaggishAmerican for organising this fantastic GB, and thanks for letting me share.

Mark, very good work and a fine example of how these AZ kits can turn out.Yes

There is something about the photos that loses impact.  It seems the light source is somewhat directed into the camera lens, causing problems with the digital capture?

Small update I've tried something new, I always hate getting the airbrush out to shoot just a small amount of clear for the pit before weathering takes longer to clean up then to put the clear down. So I found Krylon acylic gloss clear I had never heard of acylic spray paint before.

BF 110 E 7It turned out better then I thought it would. After that dried I went with some MIG dark wash. One thing I caught is the pilot seat belts are wrong for the type they had them draped over the top but there should be a hole like a 109 seat that they thread through so I changed that. So far a very nice kit Thanks for looking in.

A bit more done on the 110 got the pit mostly togeather and the fuselage togeather. Had to use some putty in front of the pit my new glue don't melt as good as Tenex did needing more to get the same effect. First time using PPP it smothed out nice and was easy to use once I got it to stick to the model instead of itself.

BF 110 E 9

BF 110 E 10

I started working on the wings too they was a bit warped and the port side has some discoloration on it with what looks like a giant hand print in the plastic, Its not a glue mark since its also rather smooth. I couldnt get off with rubbing alcohol and will need to sand out. I did buy this kit at a IPMS show and the sprues where not baged when I got it the rest of the kit seems to be just fine (except for the missing part that was super easy to make). Thanks for looking in.

I have now made a start on my Stuka. Its not a usual scale for me, in fact this is only my second one, so is somthing a bit different.

I am adding an Eduard PE set, Aires resin guns, Quickboost exhausts and True Details wheels. As to be expected, this started with the cockpit with quite a bit of Eduard PE.

The flat PE head and back rest where thickened with some sheet styrene.

Black primer was followed with some Xtracolor enamel RLM 66.

I weathered this with a black Flory wash and some dry brushing with oils and then attached all the coloured PE.

And the PE ammo boxes which i will fit once the pit is in.

And there is just the stick to paint and fit which honestly i had not completly forget about until 2 mins ago Whistling, and then the pit can be fitted.

More to follow soon.

I've finally been able to get back to a computer, and get caught up on the builds-

aeroplanegripper, she turned out lovely, and I added you to the 'completed' section.

Bish, which detail set are you using for that Stuka? That is a LOT of photoetch. It's looking really good!

Rambo, your Bf 110 cockpit is stunning. I can't wait to see her finished.

Everyone else, lots of great work around here. I didn't take good enough notes to mention everyone, but all the projects are great.

I should be starting on my next entry fairly soon- I've got an F-15 and an Fw-190 to paint, and an OV-10 to finish up, and a high-priority "commisioned"/collaboration video project to do, but once all that clears my table, I should be able to devote the rest of teh summer to the A6M.

Cheers Waggish. Its just the standard Eduard PE set, 49324. It is a nice set and make me wounder if i should just have gone for PE rather than resin for the 72nd and 32nd kits i did. Its been a nice build as well, oinly been at it a week and its almostready for paiting, just got the last couple of bit of PE on the outside and the resin guns to do.

Thanks Bish and Waggish. Got some work done on the nose and also dry fitted the wings they are going to need some putty work, figured as bad as they was warped.

BF 110 E 11

That bit of putty on the back side of the engin was a 30 minute fight to get it there and smoothed out, I don't see the hype with this stuff it would rather stick to itself or anything that isn't the model. Maybe I got a bad or old tube of the stuff, think I will try vallejo putty next or just go back to bondo spot putty

A few things to show. I wanted to beef up the landing gear and since this is gonna be in a diorama like most of my builds you wont be able to see up in the gear bay. So I drilled a hole in the top of the gear and also in the ledge the gear sits on and added a thick gauge wire. That is being held in with some extra thick CA that once it was lined up was hit with some insta cure. I'm not going to worry about being able to see the wire poke out the bottom since once it's installed to the base it will not be coming back off unless broke off BF 110 E 12 After I got home from work this morning I installed the wings and after doing some more research on PPP went to filling the gap on the one wing (slight gap on other side in places). First I put some of the PPP on a piece of slick cardboard then added a few drops of water and mixed it for a few minutes. I was then able to take a toothpick and lay it in the gap then smoothed it out with my finger. This time the stuff was like butter, now I know why people love it so much. BF 110 E 13 That gap was around 10 minutes from the time it came out of the tube, cutting it with water, filling, let it set a few minutes and then smoothing it out.

Clint, i struggle with PPP at times. I often get it in, turn the model over and find a blob of putty on the bench. I think it ok when its new, but once you have got half out of the tube, i am finding it hardto get fresh putty and am just getting the semi hard stuff from the top.

Bish, I didn't think I'd ever see an 1/48 aircraft build from you. That cockpit looks very nice! The PE sure adds a lot to it.

SS: That's going to be a very cool build, also Eduard's G4 I've been searching for it for awhile, see them on eBay from time to time, the 110 is my favorite plane the germans built during the war and from them the G night fighters are just beautiful.

It looks like a pretty straight-forward build. I have a lot of AM extras for it lying around here however, so that might change once I add some of those...

I'm thinking about building her all opened up with the Aires interior set, but I I'm not sure if I have enough free time on my hands to pull that off within the deadline of this GB.

Next up, decals and weathering then a white wash.

I've taking some vacation time and took all week off, sadly not much time at the bench it was used to finish my front porch. What I did get done was masking the canopy and getting it installed. From the looks of it some of the masks that came with it are just a tiny bit small in places but slight over spray should be easy to remove.

Bish, that base camo looks really good. I'm looking forward to seeing that Stuka with the whitewash on it.

Clint, almost all the Eduard masks I've used so far have problems with being a little bit too small in some places. They're not a perfect fit, but they still make masking canopies so much easier, especially big ones like on the 110.

I would have had this done now but I screwed up. Instead of applying decal setting solution to the fusalage and right wing cross I applied Testers thin cement Bang Head. Yeah....I was a little miffed. Luckly I caught the mistake quickly. It took me a second to figure out why the solution was melting the decal and paint. Anyway, fighting the urge to just toss the thing into the trash I set it aside, thought about it, scrapped off the fues cross and reapplied the paint. I masked the red stripe with a post-it note and peeled off the black Gruppe mark!
I'm going to Boise this weekend for 2 weeks and I'll see if I Have some extra 1/72 German decals in my decal box when I get there. The kit does'nt come with swastikas so maybe I can also find some of those as well. I really don't want to buy a whole new set.

Clint that masking is tedious but you make it look easy.

Got the 110 primed with Tamiya grey primer. Then preshaded using Tamiya nato black. The underside RLM76 was then sprayed using Lifecolor acrylic paint. The RLM76 was then masked and Tamiya white was sprayed followed by Lifecolor RLM04 yellow. The underside was all masked and RLM75 was sprayed alos using Lifecolor. This is where it sits now, tomorrow I will mask the 75 and spray the 74 then more masking and the molting will be put down. The size of the 110 will be like molting two 109s so not looking foward to it. This was my first time using Lifecolor paints I've had some tip dry that I never get with Tamiya but I'm going to blame that on the high wet temps. I started with thinning 50/50 with its own thinner that still seems to be a bit thick so next time will bump it to 40/60 paint/thinner. The color match is really good with the Lifecolor paint but I've had a chance to play with some Mission Model paint at a friends. It was just the best to use, so my plan is now to use up my few bottels of Lifecolor I got and start replacing them with Mission Model paints. I will still be using my Tamiya for IJN stuff and all my armor builds since I am very happy with my building process there. The only reason I went away from using Tamiya on German aircraft is wanting paint already color matched even tho I custom mix Tamiya for my armor but there is less colors for armor then for aircraft... Maybe I'm just crazy... anyway thanks for sticking with me here lol

I am almost done on the Stuka but one last update before i finish it off. First up, decals. No problems with these, includeing the ywllow V on the wing.

Then an overall wash with Flory bwashes and some exhaust staining.

And then the white was. I have seen this subject done a few times usually useing an airbrush. But i decided to hand brush Tamiya flat white to give a more realistic look. Followed by a little more exhaust stains.

Just a few more bits to add.

I've been wanting to add a update for the last few days but I've been having trouble with the site not wanting to load, but then later in the night around 1am when I'm on break at work its back up. Just a few things to show 1st the 110 all taped up waiting for the RLM74.

BF 110E 18

Then after a clear coat using that Krylon spray acrylic again, I might just start using it for all my gloss coats from now on I really like how it acts. All the decals went on just fine with a few of the really small ones breaking up but the kit comes with a extra or two of all the small ones so no big deal. BF 110E 19

The mottling is a bit to big in some places but I was starting to get a cramp in my hand luckly the crosses on the side covered up the worst looking one. Think next time I will have two glasses of tea before I spray mottling again. The last thing I started to use my Mig dark wash but after about two inches on the underside of one wing I decided that it was just going to be to much work. Unlike a tank aircraft have tones of panel lines a rivets so I broke out the ol flory wash and just slopped it all on. Here in a bit I'll start removing it, this is a new bottle and I gave it a good shake the thing foamed way up like I havent seen before like it was full of soap or something it ended up leaving alot of bubbels behind that I couldn't pop hopefully it cleans up well.BF 110E 20

Handsome looking 110 Clint.

I finally completed Hinrich Bar's A-8, Red 13. The kit (Academy) went together well but I had a hard time with the decals. After destroying a couple because I used thin glue instead of setting solution by mistake, I found some replacements. The decals kept coming off and were difficult to keep on until I could get a flat coat on everything. One of the landing gear broke off and I reinstalled it using a piece of wire as a pin but was still having a very difficult time getting it to dry correctly. I finally finished everything without breaking anything else long enough to take some pictures. The decals have some silvering but considering everything else this has gone through, that's minor.

Alright my Eduard BF110E is finished. Tried a few new things one is these aerobouns figures that have outstanding detail, secound is this krycell precision ice and snow next time I use it I will use hairspray instead of clearcoat to fix it still I like the outcome. So since this GB is about the aces heres a bit of info on Felix Maria Brandis. Source Osprey Arctic Bf109 and Bf110 aces.  Felix-Maria Brandis was born on 9 September 1916 at Ahaus. He received his flying training at Luftkriegsschule 1 at Dresden from 14 September 1939. Brandis was serving with JG 77 in early 1941. He was assigned to a Bf 110 Zerstörerkette, established for coastal patrol missions, based at Kirkenes in Norway. By the implementation of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia, the unit had been expanded to Staffel strength and designated 1.(Z)/JG 77. Leutnant Brandis had assumed command of the unit by this time. On 2 February 1942, Brandis was returning at low-level from a train-busting mission along the railway line south of Murmansk when the Staffel encountered bad weather. Their own base was closed so the unit diverted to Rovaniemi. In the zero visibility conditions, Brandis failed to return. It was later established he had crashed near Olanga. His Radio Op., Feldwebel Herbert Baus survived, but wounded. Oberleutnant Brandis was posthumously awarded the Deutsches Kreuz in Gold on 6 March 1942. Felix Maria Brandis was credited with 14 victories. However, some sources credit him with a victory total as high as 18 or even 25.

So here she is WA pick what ever photo you want for the 1st page.

Hello gentlemen. This weekend I (at last) started the build. As announced, the machine is a Me 109G-10, and the ace is mr. Heinz "Esau" Ewald, credited with 84 kills. Markings will be for the period when 'Esau' was operating with II./JG-52 from Veszprem in Hungary, sometime during February 1945. At that time and place, our ace was fighting both against Soviet and western allies' airforces.

The plane

The ace (found them on the net)

The kit

The basic Eduard PE set will be used to 'liven' the cockpit a little and marking will come from a Montex set of masks.

Now with the construction:

PE sets were placed, as well as some tentative wiring and other stuff, untill the cockpit looked sufficiently 'busy'.

Then everything was sprayed with Gunze RLM66, the pre-painted PE parts were installed and several details were highlighted with dry brush.

Finally the main control panel was assembled

I left everything aside to dry and I started removing the half a kilo of CA glue stuck on my hands (along comes also my skin and fingerprints, but no pain no gain).

All criticism and comments more than welcomed.

Hello to everyone (although I feel it is getting rather lonely in here, I missed the best part).

Got back home and trying to complete this project on a fast track basis. And as always, haste makes waste (as you may see in the photos)...

Some WIP snapshots:

Zvezda, looking good! Sadly, I think you're right about that. Pretty much everyone who was going to finish has already, and I imagine this got burried pretty quickly under their other, more active threads. If you don't get it done by Dec 31, no worries. Post your final pics whenever, and I'll add you to the finished board and call this GB completed.

Another AWOL checking in...with apologies to our long-suffering GB host...after persistent 'real world' distractions and a bit of 'burnout' following a convoluted commission build.

Back to my 21st Century Toys 1/32 Bf109G-14, which I'm sculpting into an only-slightly-altered late-model G-6 as flown by Finnish ace Nils 'Nipa' Katajainen. The kit, to its credit, does at least have walls rather than open holes in the landing gear wells; but I figured I'd add a bit.

First, the familiar braces from strip...although the 'clever' among you will note that they don't correspond to the bulges visible on the upper wing surface. Can't have everything....

Added the zip-close versions of the dust covers from more sheet scrap:

And the strut-area structure from pie-tin aluminum:

Finally, added a bit of grill-work to the underwing cooler intakes with some spare etch mesh and some 'L' stock:

That's it for the moment. The wings are on the fuselage now, awaiting some necessary filling and sanding. Should have another update in the coming week.

Glad to see I'm not the only well-meaning straggler wallowing toward the finish-line!Yes

greg,

Every time you post I can't believe how much you're able to add to this thing. It looks great.

How convulted are we talking on that commission? I've actually been approached by people IRL about comissions twice, turned both down because I was worried that whole thing would kneecap my already limited modelling time. (that and my reservations about my ability to meet the requests)

Anyway, great to see that a couple of you are coming back in after not posting in a while! I'll keep checking here as long as it takes!

It was just one of those that started 'growing like Topsy,' with more detail being added as I dug out more source material. I don't do commission builds all that often...or GB's, for that matter...but it goes to figure that the instant I chucked into a GB, something would inevitably pop up to gum up the works!

Anyway, I appreciate your indulgence.

Still hoping to slide in 'under the wire' on this one. I've added a few details, and she's about ready to paint.

I'll try 'pre-shading' the kit panel lines--which I don't usually do--and see how it works out.

Merry Christmas and (generic) Happy Holidays to one and all!

Greg: this is a great scratch building seminar! You inspired me to pull out a 1/ 32 Revell '109 I've got in the stash and try to scratch build the eyes out of the poor kit (and eat more pies Big Smile) . Excellent upgrades, I especially love the air intakes work. You are fully qualified for a job in Regensburg.

Mr. Heinz 'Esaw' Ewald's mount has had some progress yesterday.

Painting of base colors and masking for the insignia & markings: crosses, number '3', JG-52 yellow band and hungarian front 'V' marking + the letter 'E' with the little piggy (E-Sau) .

Masking of windshield and cockpit. Canopy will be painted separately.

Painting of underside and fuselage sides with RLM 76 Light blue (Gunze H-417 acrylic), thinned 10% with white.

Everything is now drying nice and quietly.

Great work on 'Esaw's' mount! Those masks for the 'piggy' look like a grand step up from the hand-painting of the same I did many (many) years ago.Wink

Is that the '60s-vintage 'old' 109 kit? I remember re-engineering that one based on great drawings in an old IPMS Quarterly; hardest part was adding the 'stretch' to the short fuselage (and repositioning panel-lines accordingly).

I lost nearly 3 decades-worth of IPMS pubs in a disastrous move some years ago...but that article might still be find-able, if you're interested.

(As for the job in Regensburg...I fear selling links at the 'wurst' stand might be the job at which I'm best qualified....Chef)

Looking forward to seeing your bird with all its 'feathers' on.

A happy 'holiday' day off...with paint.

Also odd for late-model G-6/G-14 a/c--though apparently not for Finnish birds--no 'Morane' mast antenna under the port wing. (One less thing to screw up!)

Merry Christmas to all!Big Smile

Merry Christmas to all fellow aces.

Greg: No, this is a more modern kit, a Hasegawa rebox. You did a very nice painting job, Finnish 109's have such interesting camo variations.

Today was christmas painting time.

Having read various opinions and debates concerning the colors and pattern of mr Ewald's specific fighter, I decided to apply an RLM 75/83 pattern with heavy squiggles or RLM 83, supplemented by a few RLM75 mottles. I do not know how that stands in terms of historical accuracy, but I liked it more than the usual 74/75 mottling camo. If anybody has any further info or pictures on the subject I 'd be happy to indulge.

After some drying time elapses, various areas will be painted further (balkenkreuz inner color, wing leading edges, etc).

Wow, Zvezda, that really came out nicely! The masking worked a treat.Yes

I also really like your choice of colors; a nice change-up from the 'boring' 74/75/76 scheme

[he says...having spent days fiddling with a version of that very scheme...Propeller].

Great work!

Calling this one done!

Nils 'Nipa' Katajainen joined Finland's reserve air force in 1939 and fought in the Winter War, was discharged in 1941, then returned to service only a few months later during mobilization for the Continuation War. He amassed 17.5 victories flying Brewster Buffaloes before converting to the Bf109 in May 1944, and was to add another 18 kills to his tally flying the Mersu.

Having lost his regular mount to combat damage during a sortie 2 days earlier, 'Nipa' was flying MT-476 'Yellow 7' in July, 1944, escorting bombers in an attack on Soviet shipping. After being engaged by defending Yak-9 fighters, he downed one Yak before being hit by defensive fire from the ships, which badly damaged his Bf109. He barely managed to nurse the a/c back to his base at Lappeenranta, where he was forced to try to belly-land at high speed...but instead bounced and cartwheeled, ripping off first the wings, and then the shedding the engine. Miraculously, Katajainen was pulled from the wreckage unconscious but alive.

After hospitalization and a slow recovery from his injuries, Katajainen was promoted before being discharged from the air force in November 1944; in December of that same year, he was appointed a Knight of the Mannerheim Cross, Finland's highest military decoration, for exceptional bravery. He was credited with a total of 35.5 aerial victories over 196 combat missions flown.

Following the war, 'Nipa' went on to work in the civil service in Helsinki, before passing away in 1997.

Greg, this is a true beauty. Excellent build, even more excellent painting work. The Finnish colors are very intriguing with all that yellow and light blue. Both thumbs up YesYes for your tribute to a flier with a very interesting career.

Yesterday I managed to complete all painting and assembly.

Decals were applied after a coat of Tamiya Gloss Clear and then sealed with coats of gloss (first) and flat (last) clear.

Canopy and tail wheel were masked and painted.

Wheel hubs were painted flat black carefully by hand with a thin brush.

Exhausts were painted with Gunze Mr. Color Iron and then buffed very little. Exhaust heat shields were painted Mr. Color Aluminum and then sprayed with some irregular RLM 83 streaks.

Guns (Iron buffed), Propeller blades (RLM 70) & Hub (Black w. White spiral), Antennas, etc.

I will try to apply some weathering and a couple of required micro-corrections when I get back from work today.

Zvezda, your build is looking spectacular! That color combination really has a lethal look to it, particularly with the 'Erla haube' canopy.

The masked markings also look perfect. I've used masks for individual markings on occasion, but never for full insignia; I'll have to give that technique a try one of these days.

Thanks for your kind words on my build. I've always been attracted to the Finnish color schemes...they really seem to 'pop.'Smile

Zvezda1980
Btw, how on earth do you people manage to make such perfect aerial antennas Surprise?

It's easy with EZ-Line. (Sounds like a 1950's advertising slogan, doesn't it?) Pre-drilled holes in the tail-tip and fuselage let you anchor the elastic-y material with a tiny drop of super-glue. I stretch the 'horizontal' from the tail forward across the mast until the tension is to my liking, then hit it with another droplet of CA. For the 'vertical' I use a pair of stand-mounted tweezers. I stretch it until it's just taut...but not tight enough to pull the main line down...then hit it with another smidge of CA. Once fully dry (a matter of seconds) I trim the excess with a sharp pair of nail-clippers. Since the material flexes, it's easy to get a close, clean cut without pulling anything loose.

Happy New Year, and congratulations on your fine build!

Finally finished.

Some minor corrections, some exhaust stains added, a little dusting of the lower surfaces (must have been pretty muddy/dusty in Hungary on February 1945), nav lights on and the build is announced completed.
