Gary: Ohhhhhhhhhh cool! Looking forward to seeing all this come together!

And thanks for the shots of Houston Launch Control, I've got to get out there to see it someday.

Time to start this off, and since the project I'm working on is about 50 years old, I thought this would be a good video to post.  "It's been a long time..."

This is the old Revell "The Apollo" model from 1969.  It's missing a few pieces that I'm going to have to scratch-build, but I've gotten quite a few plans, dimensions and photos collected so I hope that it won't be too bad.  Here's what the project looks like now.

I'm going to have to do some paint removal, so soaking in Purple Stuff will be one of the first priorities.  While the paint is being removed, I'm planning on starting the LES (Launch Escape System) or Escape Tower.  The piece of dowel in the picture is the beginning of that.  Here's a nice photo of one at Houston.

The NASA patch is one I picked up at the Marshall Space Flight Center back in the early 70s.  I hope to incorporate it into the base the model will sit on when finished.

As a back up, and when I finish the main project, I have a few items I want to refurbish.

These are part of the AMT "Man in Space" rocket collection, and the Revell Saturn V.  I only have the upper portion of the Saturn V (and a few parts of the S-IVB).  I intend to rebuild them, including a new S-IVB scratch-built.  Since I only have one Mercury capsule, I'll use it on the Atlas and turn the Redstone booster into an Army Redstone with a scratch-built upper payload.  I have collected dimensions and photos for that too.

Anyway, good luck with all your builds!

It's now 2 hours till launch.  Weather is nominal.  All systems report nominal.  Crew is in the gantry and boarding the craft.  Flight Director should give us a go.

Here's some more shots of the old Launch Control Room at Houston.

And in keeping with Gamera's tune, here's an oldie which played during the last Apollo missions on CBS' coverage.

Gamera

Thanks Gary,

Gee friggin' whiz there's two on Ebay for about that price. I wouldn't give but maybe twenty bucks for the model on a good day. Dang, I'm going to see if these sell at that price. If so I might just unload this and grab something else!

Gamera>  I wouldn't blame you!  At the prices some of these models are going, selling them might be more rewarding than building them!  If you can sell it for that much and get something much cheaper, that's the way to go!  That said, I posted pictures of my old pieces on the 1st page, and I doubt I would get much for them.  So it's easier to "rebuild" them than sell.

T-Minus 8 hours and counting.   Launch Pad Director reports fueling is underway.  All systems are still nominal.

Gamera>  I apologize!  The Buran is not going for $150.00.  I misremembered.  It's only going for $125.00!  A steal, in case you want to snag another one.  Wink

Gamera> Neat shots!

While going through stuff on E-bay I found your model.  It was listed at almost $150.00!  Maybe, instead of a Group Build, we should have a Group Sale!  Some of these prices are just... Surprise

Gary

WHOA!!! I traded it for a Revell 1/32nd chopper I really didn't want to a guy who didn't want the Buran at our club Christmas party two years ago. I didn't know it was worth anything!!!!

Guess I'll go ahead and build it though, it's kinda beat up and probably not worth that much. I'll have to check Ebay over the next week or so and see if they one you found sells for that much.

How does this GB thing work? Where should I post pictures of my LM-5 build, in this thread or in a separate thread? I was hoping to share detailed WIP pictures, but I am worried about cluttering up this thread for others. Is that standard procedure for group builds?

Hypertex>  You should post pictures of your WIP in this thread once you start.  A description of the build process is nice, and any problems and solutions in putting the model together.  You can also ask for advice or help if you run into problems (thus the advantage of a "group" build).  Yes, that is standard procedure for Group Builds.  Smile

You should browse through some of the other Group Build threads to see what others post about their projects.  Some participants are very detailed, others just show the basics.  It's up to you.

You may also post a WIP thread in the other forum categories (in this case, "Space") since some do not read the Group Build threads.

Hope that answers your question.  Smile

Gary

  • The Sigma 7 spacecraft with Astronaut Walter M. Schirra, Jr., as pilot was launched into orbit by a Mercury-Atlas vehicle from Atlantic Missile Range. In the most successful American manned space flight to date, Schirra traveled nearly six orbits, returning to earth at a predetermined point in the Pacific Ocean 9 hours, 13 minutes after liftoff. Within 40 minutes after landing, he and his spacecraft were safely aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Kearsarge. Schirra attempted and achieved a nearly perfect mission by sticking rigorously to mission plan.

Their solid rocket boosters look cool. Too bad the instructions don't have an english translation section.

Well, guess there's no reason I can't post a few sprue shots even if I can't start. Pretty simple kit, I hope it will go together fast when I get moving on it.

I did find some photos of a model of the shuttle and Buran from Huntsville:

Gary,

Flight is a go, the rocket will just be a little slow to achieve escape velocity. I'm planning on starting the Sat V on the 4th.

Gamera & Modelcrazy>  No problems!  I know you two have more GB irons in the fire than most!  I also know you two will give it a go when you can.  That's why I suggested something simple to build for this GB.  Hope you two can join in soon!

Gary & Steve: I'm still in but just think I should delay the start here. I've been starting stuff all year but not finishing anything. Hopefully I'll be ready by the first of the year.

Oh I hear ya Gam, I'm in the same boat. My Rocket garden will max out my bench for the moment.
