Looking good Mongoose, nice PE work. In naval terms it would be fore superstructure, but who cares, front of the superstructure is just fine and this isn't the Naval Academy.

Mach, well done on the mod.

I have been silent.... but watching.

I have to say that this GB is going great!. The PT109 looks like the real deal, and bakster's wood deck is just PERFECT. Those subs are looking really nice as well, I just love the Gato subs deck gun (WOW). Mach71 is bringing the Monogram sub up to a new level. Those modern surface ships are looking awesome too (details and PE). I can go on and on, but keep up the fantastic and inspiring work.

I will be posting eventually.

Ben

Mongoose-- nice progress on your build and the work you have done looks really good! Love that PE...  Yes

Here is where I am with the main guns:

The image below are the turrets as they look out of the box. Notice the barrels and the canvas skirts. In the next image you will see that I utilize the base of the barrels for repurpose.

I cut the barrels off, sanded the canvas skirts to a flat, glued, and then drilled.

I will make the barrels next.

PS: Thanks Drums and Hogfanfs about the decking, I appreciate the nice comments. Beer

Back to the aft superstructure tonightConfused no parts have been lost on this mission so far.

The only thing I cannot figure out yet is if there will be a short ladder to go on the left side. Pontos shows the stock molded ladder remaining here. Only found 2 short ones on the frets so this may stay as is or maybe i have something from the 1/700 destroyer i did that would work. Hmmmm?

Heres a shot of my 2nd, maybe 3rd attempt, at soldering. I managed to get the front 2 edges soldered together. No luck closing the gap on the bottom edges tho. No matter what i did the solder just balled up. I don’t think i was getting the edges to touch and so it would wick along them. Anyone else with soldering experience who could add a few best practices for me?

Tiny little thing.

a) try holding a tiny length of brass wire behind the joint.

b) don't worry about it.

Ben, it's great to have you checking in, thanks. It's more fun to know others are watching as well.

Bakster, I use Mr Surfacer 500 to replace the blast bags. If you have any give that a try when you get to it.

Mongoose, I solder every day, but usually under a microscope soldering 2mm surface mount components to PC boards. Try adding some flux to the soldering surface, clean the solder tip and/or the surface to be soldered, and/or hold the iron on a little longer to make sure the surface reaches the proper temprature. If you are using resen core solder you will still need some flux on the surface to help the solder flow. My guess is that your tip/surface is not clean.

Hey Steve, that is good advice Sir. Unfortunately, I don't have any. I might try using sprue-goo, I have some. I ought be able to build those up in no time. We will find out...Huh?

Ahoy captians.

My wife and I will be going to the Oragon coast Friday morning and returning Monday night. I will be away from my laptop during this time but be able to check in and post with my phone. Since I won't have access to to the computer, I won't be able to post any finished build pics until I return.

Thanks guys.

Enjoy Admiral.  You have earned it.  If you are in the Lebanon/Albany/Corvallis area Sunday or Monday I'd be happy to buy you and SecNav a cup of grog.

Hey Ben, I'm docked from starting this GB too.  My bench is full at the moment with a aircraft carrier and a Satrun V rocket.  Maybe you and I will be in the second wave and keep this GB going for a long time.  I have my kit open and ready to start, just no room on the bench.

Yes, I'm full of puns today.

Steve, have fun the on Oregon coast. I really miss that area.  I will be doing a 100 mile bike ride in southeastern Kansas this weekend followed with two RC fun flys.  So no building on the model bench this weekend.

GH, our return trip is on Hwy 20 through Corvallis Monday morning. We won't have much time to stop but we would love to meet you for a quick cup of joe. I'll message you when we plan to leave with the approx time we'll be passing through and see if we can meet up. It'll probably be somewhere around 9 to10 am but I'll need to pin it down with the XO.

If staying on 20 all the way then Sharis in Lebanon is right on the main drag.  Time frame is fine, will PM my number for text contact/updates.

The last PE set for my USS Missouri finally came in. Now as soon as I finish my German armor I'll start on it. Might take me a long while since we have to get several of our rental houses ready for sale over the next couple years. It seems like no mater what I try to do in starting a new model life pops up and sets me back. Still it will be fun to try.

KC, since ships take longer than most projects, the interest in the build wains and returns and life happens, is why the GB has no end date, don't worry about it. As long as I have a build logged down, it doesn't matter.

Hey Steve, enjoy your trip. I watched a show recently where some believe Sir Francis Drake hid his treasure there, so, don't go taking that treasure before I get to it. Lol.

Enjoy.

My turrets are done, and I made them out of brass tubing. I purchased a tubing assortment made by Albion Alloys LTD. These worked out great because each tube fit perfectly into the other and most importantly, they are the sizes I need. The supplier that I purchased them through is VCH Hobbies. The assortment comes with one each 12" lengths of 1.2mm, 1.4mm, 1.6mm, and 1.8mm. I think I paid $9 and change, not including shipping.

Next to do is mount them within the turret housings. I have a few thoughts on that and please advise what you think:

1. In my research I found several USS WI images that show turrets at various elevations. It seems this ship allows for that. What is your opinion in mounting them at various elevations? Though technically correct, I wonder about the aesthetics of it. Will it look messed up?

2. As you know I plan on displaying the ship with a firing turret. My plan is to fire only one of them. Should I pose that turret in a recoil position? It may not even be noticed but why not do it I wonder.

Concerning gun elevation, for sailing the barrels were all set at similar degrees. During battle, or even practice, the barrels could be at different elevations. Showing the barrel in a recoil could be cool. Not sure if it would be noticeable in 1/700

Worked on a couple things over the last few days. Those rafts or vents, not sure what they are, on the side of the exhaust stack were a pain. Only because they broke in half when removing from sprue. Haven’t had that problem sinc i was a kid. After breaking 4 of them i cut the sprue to reliveventension and they all came off ok. And after all that storyline...appears I forgot to take a picture. Will upload one tomorrow. For now here’s where I’m at. test fitting the superstructure.

I would venture that by the time you see the blast effect of flame and smoke the barrel would be at almost full recoil.

Don't know how much they recoiled though and the difference in scale.  Interesting thought though.

Here is an image I found that started my thinking about it. If you look at the foreground turret you can see how far the turret traveled, particularly by looking at the section closest to the blast bag. I think you are right in that it will be difficult to see at this scale but what the heck, I will go for it.

Mongoose, looking really good.

Bakster, OK, yeah it might be noticeable in that scale. Those little extras and detail are the things that separate a good build from an excellent one.

It's hard to know where that 16" rifle is in it's recoil sequence, but probably still had a bit more to travel. Rough estimate from the diameter of the barrel at the muzzle (say 24"), that recoil looks to be a bit less.

That suggests about 1/32" in the scale, which seems pretty minimal to me. The best tell seems to be that black sleeve around the base of the barrel.
