Just looking at the next steps, and I think I hate Trumpeter already.  4 of one winch, 10 of another, and add in 2 more for good measure.  Everyone of them is at least 4 parts.  Wonder how many the carpet is going to eat.  I only have 10 fat thumbs going for me, and the carpet just loves that.

Great GH looking forward to seeing it come along. 

Got the hull, and main decks on the Brown.  Couple of seams to fill after sanding flush.  Will get some pics up late next week.  Got to make a LHS run for the grey and red.

Rob, I will usually lighten the color in places to add a varity, like some streaking. Dry brushing will certantly bring out the detail.

Continuing my build of the 1:144 Fletcher. I have a question for all. I am trying to build the USS Johnson (557). It was painted in measure 21 camoflage.   Navy Blue with a deck blue deck. The problem is the colors are very effective. You can see almost nothing on the bulkheads in anything but the brightest lighting. I was thinbking of perhaps dry brusing the doors. vents etc something lighter to makke them stand out. Any ideas or suggestions would be valued!

 

 

 

 

you might want to try a gray wash to start with. Easy to take off if you don't like it. Then you can dry brush over the top srfaces. I think the wash will add depth. I use the flory washes over a satin clear. Have also used tamiya panel line over gloss.

Gary, I had know idea what the purpose of that sorta kinda detailing half as##d attempt of and interior was either. I figured they wanted to make an interior for it, decided not to and didn't want to spend anymore resourses it. So they went with what they had.

As big as she is, and the handling, brass and wire will be better for railings, masts and antenna mounts.  Will follow this build.  Love the Gato class

goldhammer shapeways is about as adictive as PE And costs about the same too! I started donating plasma to be able to pay for this stuff 
I went to the dark side myself. 2 donations to pick up the 1/48 Balao Fairweather. It looks really nice. 1 of the railing broke already though. Honestly I figure I'll end up soldering some wire for them anyway. Time will tell...or maybe my clumsiness will as if i keep breaking them it'll definitely be time to get the soldering iron out lol

this stuff is way better than the fiberglass piece that came with the sub. It was formed with a seam down the middle and the 2 halves were off by 1/8". The replacement above is the White Natural Versatile Plastic. Good for modeling. Another reason to replace the railing will be so it survives submersing Once i get the r/c equipment in it.

Nice start on her.  Shapeways has some beautiful deck guns in 3,4,and 5", as well as 20mm's.  If you want to add torture to her, there are PE sets for the shears, prop guards, etc.

Progress Report:

The Trumpeter USS Gato is not a complicated model.  It should be an easy build... but more on that later.  This is a rundown on what is included in the kit.  Inner hull, outer hull, deck, conning tower and acoutrements.

The inner hull has some bulkheads and flooring which I have no idea why it was included.  There's no detail and unless you want to recreate the submarines interior at 1/144 scale, it serves no purpose.  I glued the two halves together and painted it and the interior of the outer hull black.

I then glued the inner hull to the inner section, and using good old Testors cement (because I had such a long glue section) taped the two sides together.

Then I attempted to glue the deck onto the outer hull, but found that there was a terrible mismatch where the deck meets the forward area, so I had to remove it.

Dry fit, THEN glue.  I should learn that.  And that's where she stands now, as I try to figure out how to fix the deck.
