British army GB feeler
Posted by Bish on Sunday, July 28, 2019 5:46 AM

A couple of years ago i started the RAF 100th anniversary GB. Then last year Steve started his British ships GB, for which i did my patriotic duty and duly signed up. But at this point i realised there was somthing missing. After giving some thought to the matter over several cups of coffee (i don't do tea, even patriotism has limits) the penny dropped.

So, working on the principal of leaving the best till last, i thought i would see if there would be enough interest for a British army GB. The GB would be open to any subject related to the British army. Aswell as tanks, vehicles and figures, there would be scope for aircraft, those belonging to the RFC of WW1, WW2 gliders and the helicopters of the modern AAC.

And while most of us focus on the 20th century, in the hope that there may be a few figure painters out there, i would like to take the GB back to the begining. While the British Army traces its history back to the formation of an English Army in 1660, it has its origins in the New Model Army of the English Civil War. The GB would be open to subjects going back to that conflict.

As with the RAF GB, subjects from other nations serving under British command would be included. Whether that be for long periods such as the units of the 8th army or those who were under British command for a short period, such as US Airbourne forces during Market Garden.

And, so the Bootnecks don't feel left out, they are not covered by the British ships GB and they do have their origins in an English Army unit formed in 1664, Royal Marines subjects can be included. I am sure they won't mind being under the Army banner Big Smile

If there is enough interest (and why wouldn't there be) the GB will begin on Jan 1st and run throughout 2020.

So, why not sign up and take the Queens Shilling. The normal 4 year minimum has been wavered and you only have to commit 12 months service. And while you won't actually get a shilling, you will be able to choose a badge from one of 3 that you can proudly display.

You just made my Sunday Bish,

A morning of weeding and cleaning up the house (teenagers) along with the boss. A long way from last night when working on two GB's took time with a cuppa to drool over the stash in particular a couple of British vehicles.

" alt="" />Just ran in and snapped this lot, a tough time choosing but you can count me in.

Thanks Bish.

As soon as I get settled into my new home next year and workshop established, this sounds like one that I’d love to join.

Joe, nice lineup you have there.

Carlos, i made a mental note a while back when you mentioned you had those HB land Rover kits, was hoping you would sign up.

Jeff, nice. But i hope you have some 1/35th black tape to put over the eyes so we can't see who they are Wink

Sounds liek you have plenty of choice tehre. I have found a site that does ECW busts and going to grab one of those.

I have seen some stunning Napoleonic figures, we have a few guys in our club who do a lot of those subjects. That stuff is just another level of amazing.

Back in the early 90's i was serving in Londonderry and was up at one of the FOB's in the city.I was flicking through one of those men mag's Wink and came across a pic of half a dozen squaddies stood in a line. They all had their trousers round their ankles and black tape over their eyes. I suddenly realised i recognised a mop of blonde hair on one of them. My younger brother who was serving in S Armagh at the time.

Thats an image i will never forget Ick!

Yep, I’d be up for that.  Got a couple of LRDG truck kits I’ve been holding in stash, just waiting for the right opportunity to break them out!

I'm always in for one of your GB's Bish, in fact I'm a little surprised it took you this long to get to the Army.

I'm sure I have something belonging to the British Army, if not, I have 5 + months to find something.

I never thought of doing a British army GB before because i wasn't sure there would be enough interest. But after the RAF and Navy, i just could not do it. I'm sure you can come up with something. The Army does use boats but i have never seen a kit of one.

Bish,

I can't seem to finish a kit to save my life, but I'd be interested.  I have a number of British Army subjects on the "do these soon" pile.  At the top is the old Tamiya Chieftain, which I previously built around 1979.  I loved that kit, and despite it's known shortcomings, is a sweet model to assemble.  The figures are wonderful Tamiya icing on the cake!  If not that, I'll choose something else for variety, which I have aplenty.  Like a 1/6 scale PIAT -what did the acronymn stand for?  Pretty Ineffective Army Toy?  Or something like that.  But I love the shape of the thing.  I got to play the PIAT "acrade game" at Bovington.  Stick out tongue

I'll clear up the bench and put down a definite subject as the GB start date nears.

Projectile Infantry Anti Tank, but yours is much better. The British army always comes up with its own version of acronym (TELIC - Tell Everyone Leave Is Canceled). I'll have to look out for that game next time i am down there. Wil be a pleasure to have you on board.

Thanks Bish!

I got to heft a real PIAT, and man that thing was HEAVY!  Like the standard issue British rifle that was at the beginnig of the WW I display at Bovington.  It made me think of the iron staff that a Buddhist monk carried in his travels that was at Kiyomizu-Dera in Kyoto.

BTW the PIAT game simulates the low velocity of the real thing.  It’s kind of like throwing a sack of potatoes!

Well, I've got a few things I need to push out of the way and then hopefully to Han Solo in your SW GB. If I can get him done I'd love to hop in here. Got a Bronco 1/35th A34 Comet that's been sitting around forever I really need to get built.

I looked through the stash last night and just as I thought, I don't have anything Army. I have plenty RAF, FFA and RN but no Army. Embarrassed

We are having a show here in Sep and I'll see what I can pick up at the vender tables or maybe just a Sprue Bros sell.
