Military trainer aircraft Group build 2020
Posted by mach71 on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 7:23 PM

The T-38 is coming up on 60 years in service, with the selection of the T-7 Redhawk as Its replacement, it seems a good time to honor it with a group build.

This GB will begin March 17 2020 and run until March 17 2021, the 60th year of its service.

The rules:

1. Any military trainer from any country/service. In any livery. Example T-38

2. Any non trainer used in a training role, but it must be in training livery. Example Mig-15

3. Any proposed trainer, even if it never saw service. Example Fairchild T-46 or even the Textron Scorpion.

4. Any build, kit/kitbash/scratch build as long as it's less than 50% complete at the start.

5. Post WIP photos.

6. HAVE FUN and build.

Stories that go with builds are great as are real life photos.

I think thats about it.

Jeaton01 made a great badge, Thanks.

Looking good mach. Jeaton did a great job on the avatar, thumbs up to him. Put me down for Academy/Minicraft 1/50 T-38A Talon. In what markings I don't know yet. I hope to get a few external aftermarket details for it too (resin wheels, landing gear, pilot tube, ect.). A pile of stores were included with it, so I got that area covered. Fun fun fun!

Anybody know of any T-43 Navigator trainer kits out there? Or I may have to find a T-37 Tweet

The T-43 was basically a 737-200 modified with only 9(?) windows a side. I'm sure aftermarket decals are available for it.

Yup. You've got the Airfix and Eastern Express kits in 1/144 with Draw Decals for the markings.  If 1/144 is too small for you, you've got a choice of the venerable Aurora/Monogram 737-200 or new player in the form of Big Plane Kits with a modern kit of the 737-200.  Draw Decals https://www.shopdrawdecal.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=44%2D737%2D100 and https://www.shopdrawdecal.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=72%2D737%2D100 and https://www.shopdrawdecal.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=72%2D737%2D101  All of the kits I mentioned are or should be available on Evilbay.

Hi Mach,

I think I have a Tigermoth of something for newb pilots. Let me look around.

Steve

Building a kit from your stash is like cutting a head off a Hydra, two more take it's place.

Put me on the list.  I know I have a couple of T-6s in the stash and a Stearman.  If I dig deep enough I may have a T-38 somewhere.

tempestjohnny, Great choice! I got to see a few of these in Europe in the '80s. It's a very different design.

Bish,

Both great choices! I'm looking forward to seeing your builds.

While in my LHS today I was looking at the Me262B-1, it looks like a nice kit.

freem and lewbud, are your T-6's the original or the new T-6?

Either would be great! Just wondering.

Today I dug out my old wood T-38 model I got in the AirForce back in 1983!

The pitot tube is bent and the front a bit chipped. The problems of being in storage and moved a bunch.

2 beautiful planes Mr. Keav Toast. Hope I can do half as nice a job on my T-38, that would make me happy Big Smile.

Like what was before hand, going to be built stob. I'm painting the canopy solid black, and focusing on painting/decaling. Should be much fun :). Lucky for me, it's Minicrafts kit from the 80's, not the ancient Fujimi one Wink. Still nopit detail to speak of, but very good fits, and nice surface detail, all recessed Propeller. Another nice bonus is i got a full sprue of stores for it, all very nice. I'm doing it in regular training config, so i'll save all the stores for another kit. All in all, a great build for beginners, like me Wink

Ye, doesn't look to bad. I have built one of the Hase single seaters before, it went together well. I have 2 of these two seater kits so i can do the Nightfighter as well.

To hold us over before the official start...

To late mach, I started building 1am yesterday and went non-stop for 14 hours... I couldn't help myself! Devil

I know, i blew the start date well outa the water, least you have the satifaction of knowing that my cfs and fm weren't very happy afterword, to say the least. Well deserved punishment Embarrassed. At least i have the satifaction of enjoying the build, and seeing it come together quite well. Excellent kit for me IMHO, goes together excellent for being old molds. Any problems i've incountered are my own fault, especially dealing with the wings. Really messed up the surfaces on them, own fault again Embarrassed. But in a way, it's good that i kinda did some bad things on it, being a 7 1/5 buck kit, makes for an excellent learner model, can't recommend it high enough, for that reason alone. Much better then learning on a state of the art, 1,000+ piece, several hunderd $, modern super model. Especially those large scale ships, those truly scare me Tongue Tied. Any way, i'm finally getting through the wings, and making some serious progress. Not really build progress photos, got so caught up in it that i forgot to take pics along the way, sorry again Embarrassed.

I'm a bad boy and got a well deserved spanking on this one Crying.

Willy Big Smile

Ha!  Supposed to wait until st paddy's day.  Looks good.  Fun to watch all the t-38s builds.

I went a bit crazy and ordered a t34, t6 and t2.  I've got a year to build them all

BTW anyone know the color used for the yellow trainers?  Looks a touch orange.

Thanks,

John

Thank you mates Big Smile Yes, i'm having a ball. But even then, you can get burnt out having fun Wink. I'm getting a bad case of "Sanding Syndrome" from this build, and my build of polar lights 1:1000 refit enterprise. Boy I've done a pile of sanding as of late! Time to take a break with an Tamiya shake n' bake motorcycle. I guess I've gotten to the point on the talon that I can safely put her on hold, at least till the true start date Devil. I have the decals picked out, nice big sheet from bna. Other then that, I guess i'll check back in on the 15th.
