Hello all,
I am planning to build an M1 MBT. What I need are opinions on which kit is the most accurate. Also, if any of you have opinions on the best aftermarket kits to go with the model please include them. Thanks!!
If you can get your hands on the Dragon M1A1 AIM or SEP they are fantastic kits,can still be had for a decent price,and are crammed with AM stuff like metal barrel,magic tracks,and lotsa PE.
for a simpler kit,you can go with Tamiya,but you would probably want to add some AM stuff

That site gives a pretty good comparison of Abrams kits although I don't think it includes the more recent Dragon releases being the M1A1 AIM, and M1A2 which are the best although also very complex.
However if you actually are after an M1 then I'm not sure what is out there.

I'd go for the Dragon. Tamiya's kit has some issues like motorization holes, incomplete hull over the tracks that will need to be addressed. Academy's kit looks like a rehash of the Tamiya mold, I have one sitting in reserve waiting to be built.

Yes, if you are looking for an original M1 (not IP, A2, A2, etc.) the only choices are two OOP kits in 1/35. Tamiya and ESCI/AMT-ERTL

The answer also depends on what era M1 you'd like to build. While the aforementioned Dragon M1A1AIM and M1A2SEP are by far the best, most accurate Abrams kits, they are both very late tanks and the M1A2 was not used by the Marines and the M1A2SEP was not widely fielded in the US Army.
The tank has been in use for around 30 years so if you want to do an early 80s Cold War tank, Desert Storm era tank, invasion of Iraq tank or later OIF tank, there may be better choices to start from.
Sort of like the T-34, Sherman, or Panzer IV. The time frame narrows down kit choices.

Though I do have the Dragon M1A2 M1A2SEP M1A1HC and the Tamiya and Academy M1 Abrams and loads of Archer dry transfers for the M1.
