if I understand correctly, the sand was mixes with paint and applied?

That's right! If not mixed it won't stick to the model.

That's really interesting, it might be a good way to create mud. I'm definitely going to try that on a piece of scrap plastic and see what results I get. Please give my compliments to your friend.
