Sherman III tool layout
Posted by Aldershot II on Friday, January 23, 2015 10:39 AM

A new member but experienced modeler wondering about tool layout comparing Sherman III layout to American version. Would it be the same location and items? I am using Dragons Sherman III kit  #6231 for my project as used by Fort Garry Horse in France '44.

Thank you for reading

There was no different basic tool layout from the factories.  You often see some UK fitters adding bromide fire extinguishers on the back decks and other peculiarities -- but the basic pioneer tools' locations would be the same.  Dragon made several Sherman III kits. This is the best of the lot

Previous ones had bad placement of the drivers' hood periscope openings.

Thank you Roy, I appreciate the info. My project is planned to be a sister tank of the subject of this well known image. The kit is started with a few additional aftermarket products and Modelkasten T54E1 track set. I will start a thread on the build if things progress a bit more of what I am attempting.

Cool.  Are you going to do a burned out tank?  If so, I highly recommend the Panzer Art RE35-224 (early spoked wheels)

or RE35-224 (later stamped wheels) -- these would be mimic those in your photo

Hmm Uh no, not burned out, an operational one but the same Troop as the knocked out one. My edition of "The Royal Canadian Armoured Corps" describes the action where this would have taken place. Good chances this was "A" squadron of the Fort Garry Horse in or around 11 June.

I didn't like the kit exhaust, way too simplified. I'm scratching the hull applique armour. I need to decide how I am doing the markings as I find decals are always a bit to stark looking on a weathered vehicle. I will have to come up with stencils or hand paint some of the markings. I will use the photo as a loose guideline for detailing.

The Fort Garry Horse has a unit hardcover history book for sale in their kitshop but I am hesitant to lay down $70 + without knowing how much extra photo coverage there is of their operations in Europe 44-45.
