I am building a Tamiya 1/48 Wirbelwind and I would like to know what you guys think about applying Zimmerit to the vehicle.
I know the Germans used some Panzer IV hulls which had Zimmerit previously applied to assemble Flakpanzers, but was that common? I wouldn't imagine a crew applying Zimmerit to an AA because it wouldn't see frontline combat.

Not sure about actual use, but DML did issue a 1/35 kit that had pre-molded zim.

Photo's show them both with and without Zimm. All Wirbelwind and Ostwind were built useing re-condition hulls. So it would depend on when the original tank was bult. Production ran from July 44 to March/April 45. So early vehicles would more likely have it, though not always as shown by the 5 Wirbel's pictured alongside the trial Ostwind in Summer 44. The 5 Wirbels don't have it, the Ostwind does, all useing Pz IV Ausf G hull's.
I believe that Wirbel kit is based on their Pz IV Ausf J kit with 4 return rollers which were in production until Dec 44. So it could be with or without Zimm.

WW's and O'winds did see frontline use. There are many of them documented in the Bulge. I can ask a friend of mine on Tuesday about where and how many were used. He was one of the people who provided the German order of battle for A Time For Trumpets.

Never seen zim on the AA turrets on either. Normally attached to HQs for AA & security, but were very effective when deployed against inf. & strongpoints as well. PaulE
