WWII Russian Armor Color Question
Posted by Mopar Madness on Saturday, October 24, 2020 8:02 PM

Hi everybody. I am working on a Tamiya JSU-152.  The instructions do not specify what color the hatch interiors must be and I am not well-versed in armor. Are they olive drab like the exterior?  Thank you in advance for your help!

Thats a great kit isn't it ? I googled images and a lot of modelers go with white, scraped up and weathered.I know the Germans started the war with buff and later switched to the same outer color so it didn't stand out as an aiming point.Soviets, not so sure.after all they painted big white stripes on their tanks too.

It is a great kit and goes together without fault. The instructions note that everything that is not called out with a specific color is to be painted olive drab. But I wanted to double check with the experts before I commit!

“Officially” the color of Soviet Tanks in the Great Patriotic War (aka WWII) was known by the designation of 4B0 Green. Look it up and join the Russian version of the Olive Drab game...Then find the shade of green that you think that you will prefer.

And yes the hatch interior faces will painted in the same color.

4B0 is a good start point. you can lighten it a little or mix a bit of yellow in for variations. you can walk down a Russian tank park and see numerous shades of green so do not get to wrapped up in the precise color (I have gone through that stage; i think we all do at some point). i suspect the hatches would be the same as the exterior but i usually do mine the interior color (usually aged white) just to add some "color" and variation to a one color scheme.

I am of the artistic over absolute realism school. Another example, i tend to paint tools a dull steel gray with wood handles. Usually they would be the same color as the base coat on the vehicle but again some color.
