Finaly finished my T-34/85
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 9, 2004 12:01 AM
well i decided to take a short break from my panther last weekend to finish this tamiya t-34/85 its built straight out of the box. overall meh i could have done better , the i'm not too happy with my mud, i'm going to have to find another technique to do it, all i prety much did was throw on artists oils in thick layers. i also overdid the paint chips altho i'm happy with what they look like who knows maybe the Tank commander suffered from a obsession with peeling off the paint chips and eating them Big Smile [:D].

i don't know something seems to be missing maybe i'll add some foilage or something on it, its just too plain with nothing realy standing out. the tracks also look like crap (not realy the weathering but the vinyl tracks themselves, after building fruilmodel tracks for my panther i don't think i'll ever be happy with how 1 peice vinyl tracks look)

anyways if anyone has any observations or sugestions on how i could improve please let me know Smile [:)]

Nah, I wouldn't say you overdid the paint chipping. T-34's can be very beat up. I think the main problem seems that the tank lacks depth. Maybe you can dry brush it to bring out the highlights and also do washes on it. One last thing is maybe try to give the tracks a little bit of sag but that might be hard to do with the stock tracks.

Looks good to me. Much better than the T3485 I did last last year.

Nice job Pantherlehr,

Like hungfarlow said - some of the dirtiest, beat up tanks that I have seen in reference photos have been T- 34's. I think it looks good.

Only thing that you might be seing .....is that the coat of mud is too uniform. Maybe try making that coat more uneven in color.

I think it looks good as is.

I think it looks great. Nice job on this one, Pantherlehr. I like the weathering, it makes the kit look really heavy. Dont be too hard on yourself.

Looks good PantherLehr! I don't thing you over did the chipping, I would in fact add some around the hatches and other wear areas on the top surfaces. Good overall job though by all means, I think it looks great!

there's quite a few paint chips on the top and on the turret but the pictures don't realy show them , the light has to hit them just right or they dont realy show

to make them i took one of those green scour pads used to scrub dishes and dipped it in a mix of 90% gunmetal and 10% titanium silver then just tapped the model with it (get most of the paint off the scour pad before applying it to the model). as usual try it on something other than your model first , it took me a little while to get a feel for how much paint in should have on the pad

one thing to keep in mind is they arn't too visible until they dry up , don't do like i did , do a little wait for it to dry so you can realy see then add some more if its not enough.

beautiful weathering : not overdone at all , soviet armour got beat up a lot , but i do agree to do the same to the top turret and hatch as they got used and walked on the most ! Wink [;)] Also put some sag in those tracks ... them sovs had a way of not tightening their tracks as they still do !... but that is an inspiring tank by all means ! Nice job Cool [8D]

I think you're being a little too hard on yourself Max !!! You've done a very good job on this build. I agree with the others about the weathering chips not being excessive at all and like Eric has pointed out, a little more around handles, hatches, areas where the crew walked wouldn't be unheard of. A little more dryburshing would help out too.

As far as the tracks go, two things. To get the sag in these types of tracks you can tie them down with string ran between the road wheels. And one thing that I did notice is the joint is on the bottom and becomes very visible there, you may want to turn the track so that it is on top and less visible.

All in all a very nice piece Max ..... and as I have often seen here, an improvement over the last build you did.

P.S. Read the thread about the Alberta Meet in Off Topic Discussions

It looks great, but I dont see any scuff marks or paint chips or anything like that on the top of the turret, the commander had to walk there alot you know, he didnt just float into the turret.

Thanks for passing on how to do the chipped paint technique. I didn't know that one.

I agree on trying some washes and some drybrushing.

Looks good!

Keep trying new techniques. That's how you grow! (and don't be so hard on yourself!)

Very nice looking build, Panther!

I like how the weathering looks on the wheels. Like said above, the only thing missing is a bit of Track-Sag.

Really fine build Max. Some things you could add: Tow cables, bedrolls, spare tracks and logs. Great build, thanks for sharing.

lots of paint chips on the turret/rear , like it said they're almost invisible unless the light hits them just the right way (i'll try taking more pictures under better lighting conditions. as far as track sag is concerned , thats as much sag as it can get , i got my tracks glued to the wheels. the real thing doesn't have much track sag either

thanks for the log idea! i was thinking branches like my 251 but logs would be perfect for this kit , mount them in front of the fuel tanks on each side, hopefully i can find logs with a nice texture to them. the kit had some spare track links in it but i tought they looked like crap so i didn't add them. tow cables are also good i'll see what i can scratch build.

thanks for all the suggestions guys

funny you mention that, i was thinking of doing a dio with the panther going around the corner of a knocked down building and surprising the t-34 from the side but i don't know anymore , the panther will be covered with details and pe and what not and the t-34 suffers from a real lack of detail. i'll see once i got the logs on there , i got a feeling it will look quite different with a few small additions. my 251 was night and day different with just a few small branches of foilage. i gave some more toughts about logs i know exactly where to get some! back alleys are full of x-mas trees waiting for the tree collection i'm sure they won't mind if i take a few branches
