"Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time".
I have been using and cleaning my plastic one for years,no problems.
I make my own disposable circle masks using scrap plastic packaging, into which I cut a pilot hole and enlarge using a tapered reaming tool.
Metal can get bent and that can cause irregularities in the circular pattern if over-spray gets under any indented or not quite flat edge.
Save your money and keep it simple.
I put a piece of wide masking tape on the paint-side of the plastic template (just the hole you're going to use) and simply cut out the center with a fairly "SHARP" scalpel - it's quite easy.
There's no need to place it on a flat surface. Hold the taped template up in one hand and cut the circle out from the non-stick side with the other. When you're finished painting; just pull off the tape - no cleanup.
I've used the same plastic template for over twenty years now and it still looks brand new.
Now, where's that "Post" button?
Ah-HA, here it is.........
A metal scribing template with circles is what you need. Available at sprue bros.
Cant you clean them off with an ammonia soaked paper towel? Thats what I use and there has been no damage so far.

Check these out. I'm sure you could find them cheaper if you look around, but this gives you an idea of what is available.

I have something fairly similar to this:

Its a little unwieldy but better than plastic.
Modeling is an excuse to buy books.
I use a plastic circle template for painting the wheels. A problem is it's impossible to clean it after many painting sessions because a solvent eats it. Has anyone seen a metal circle template? I cannot seem to find one.
